This had me gripped right from the very start, and I could barely out it down! Where's Lola, Who did it, Can Rachel Prince solve this????
The only downside for me, was that Det. Rachel Prince just wasn't very likable, however this didn't detract from the story for me.
Lola Jade Harper has been missing for months when Detective Rachel Prince is brought in to give the case a fresh perspective. The local police force have drawn a blank. It's almost as if the six year old vanished into thin air. Her mother is convinced her estranged husband is behind the abduction and it's fair to say what little evidence there is points his way. Rachel soon finds herself hitting countless brick walls as Lola's family are caught telling lie after lie. But she is determined as long as Lola isn't found there's still a chance they'll find Lola alive. But then another girl goes missing....
This is certainly an excellent beginning to a new detective series. Rachel Prince is a feisty strong lead who is determined to get results. She's ably assisted by Bricknall, a detective who is supposedly her subordinate but spends most of him time heckling and teasing her. It makes for a great dynamic, one that has a lot of chemistry.
The story is a real page turner. As Prince and Bricknall unravel the lies surrounding the Harper family suspicion falls on practically everyone that ever met the young girl. It keeps you guessing until the big reveal but even after that the drama doesn't let up. Calling a book a page turner and impossible to put down are massive clichés I know but it's just very true of this novel. Part two is just out so hopefully this is just the beginning of a great new series.
A good start to what I hope is a great series.
Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for providing a copy.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Rachel Prince and Mark Brickall work for the police and Interpol and are called into investigate the disappearance of 6 year old Lola Jade. Her mum is distraught, dad has disappeared and no one knows anything.
I absolutely loved this book. Whilst I love police thrillers and this was a different branch instead of the standard police teams which was interesting, the dynamics between Rachel and Mark was natural and funny. Straight onto book 2 now.
I enjoyed the first book in the series, Lola a 6 year old girl goes missing and her estranged parents are distraught and blaming each other. I particularly liked the interaction with Rachel the detective and Mark her work partner, the bickering and friendship parts of the novel were very well written. Through the story Rachel is looking into the old case and going through the evidence the police already have. It's certainly not the most gruesome story or the fastest pace but it is a very enjoyable read and I look forward to the next instalment.
I have mixed feelings about this book - took me a while to finish and always found myself drifting off to other books i just could not really get into the book but the relationship between the two main characters was fabulous and such a in depth back story too . I just didn’t like the actual plot, the book was just not for me cant love them all !
Follow Detective Rachel Prince as she searches for a missing 6 year old girl in Surrey. This is a regular British crime thriller, full of police procedure and the lives of the police officers involved.
I found The Lying Kind to be a GOOD read with strong characterization of the main investigating police officers and the girl’s parents. I liked all the extra bits thrown into this story concerning the private lives of the police officers. I liked the contrast between Detective Rachel Prince’s healthy eating and Detective Sergeant Mark Brickall’s love of junk food. In every scene he would devour more tasty convenience food. They also enjoyed a lovely banter together.
I liked how this story unfolded and how the police had difficulty verifying the information they had gathered. Some leads led to dead ends, others needed following up. It was nice how many of the characters could get the wrong end of the stick. There were plenty of secrets and lies in this story keeping the reader on their toes.
The plot was not wonderful but sadly reflected true cases from the past. There was not a wonderful twist or any specialist investigative skills employed. There was nothing outstanding about this book but it was a steady story. Overall I found The Lying Kind to be a bread and butter, GOOD 4 star read that featured enough drama to keep me entertained.
For all the gritty realism of this story, having been married for over 26 years, I found one little anecdote rather silly and difficult to believe. Detective Rachel Prince is searching the home of the missing 6 year old girl and goes into the mother’s bedroom.
...This too was extremely tidy, the frilly cream duvet and pillows neatly arranged, the bedside tables bare of clutter, and dresses and tops ordered by descending length in the wardrobe, shoes arranged by heel height below them…
Yeah, right, not in my home Alison or in any of my wife’s friends homes either!
The missing child case for Lola Jade is beginning to go cold and the investigators decide to call in the help of another department. Lola’s mom is a bit strange and Detective Prince is onto her. She seems to have an excuse for everything and is really good at shift the blame and suspicion into her husband (soon to be ex). Prince struggles to develop a burden of proof so she can get warrants to investigate further. Prince is also struggling in her own life. Her estranged husband is back in the picture and asking to make their separation official by signing divorce papers. I did find it a bit strange how her husband was so nice to her after she ran away and evaded him for almost two decade. He even ends up consulting with her on the case. She is also receiving incessant suspicious blocked calls. We also find out that her assistant is put on paid administrative leave, which puts the burden of the case solely on Prince’s shoulders. Then another girl goes missing and a woman is found suffocated in her own home by her young son. Questions arise whether these incidents are linked to Lola Jade’s disappearance. Will Prince be able to find Lola Jade or is it already too late?
I received a free ARC from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book and thought it was a solid mystery. While there was some good twists there was nothing overly shocking about it. It was interesting enough to keep me reading but not something I would need to stay up late to finish.
I thought Rachel's character was good. She was a smart detective who took her job seriously and I liked her and Marks relationship. I think her personal life and backstory could have been a little bit more exciting.
Overall a good read, nothing super crazy or wild but nothing terrible either. I would definitely read another book by Alison James.
I have mixed feelings about this book - the positives, I absolutely loved Rachel Prince, her relationship with Mark Brickall, the style of writing, and the back story. I didn’t like the actual plot, finding the whole thing a bit unbelievable. There is no way that someone could carry off what Michelle Harper did for as long as she did! This aside I will wait with great anticipation for the next one!!
Ie joyed this first book in the series and did connect with R achel, although her visits to the gym were too many!!
An engrossing and gripping read with twists and well written and look forward to more in the series
This book took me a little longer to read that I usually take but I did enjoy it. I look forward to following the detectives through the series
*thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
3 stars.
I didn't feel quite so engrossed in this story. It was definitely good and while I did enjoy it, I didnt love it. I think that was mainly because I didnt connect too well with Rachel, with her being big on the gym but as a detective she was rather good. I think I just place alot on that connection to the main characters of stories. The other issue I had was the swearing. There seemed so much of it and it got to the point where it made me cringe because it was over used. That is also why I dropped a star rating. The actual crime story of the missing child, Lola Jade was interesting and kept me wondering what had happened and how. A decent story.
This was a gripping read and is the first book in a series featuring DI Rachel Prince and DS Bricknall. These two form a great partnership and have a good relationship with each other. They are assigned to the case of a missing 6 year old girl, Lola. Lola’s parents are estranged and her mother accuses the father of kidnapping her, He then disappears which prompts more suspicion . But this is a family with lots of secrets and lies to hide. Can Rachel and her team find Lola and unravel this deceit? This is a book you will not be able to put down. Don’t miss reading it!
Thanks to my favourite publisher Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Lola Jade has vanished from her home and months later the search is going nowhere. As Surrey police scale down the enquiry a team is brought in from London to investigate whether or not there is a bigger issue here. Lola's parents are estranged, the mother has accused the father of kidnap, both families have secrets to hide. DI Rachel Prince and her DS Brickall are both driven individuals determined to find out what has happened to Lola Jade.
Frustratingly this book is listed under three different titles on different websites but the blurb for each is the same, this could confuse readers. The story itself has many twists and turns, in fact one could say too many and for this reason I didn't find it as good as it could have been. There is a lot of potential here, the central characters of Prince and Brickall are suitably complex and engaging, there is a good storyteller - just too much story.
Great book, very good thriller with a great storyline, with plenty of twists and turns. The characters of the book were solid and very well described. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Alison James for the copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest opinion.
I am always on the lookout for a new series to read in this book looked pretty good. I was not let down, this was a great book. I love the character of Rachel Prince. She is flawed and fantastic. This was a great start to a new series, one that I cannot wait to follow. There were lots of twists and turns in the case, while trying to find what happened to Lola Jade. I liked the interaction between the characters and cannot wait to see what they get up to in the next book.
Will definitely be reading more in this series.
This is the first book in the Rachel Prince series (and I believe this is a debut?). I’m really looking forward to book 2 and shall be recommend this highly
Thanks to Bookouture for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review
Rachel Prince is a great character. Like all the best detectives she is intuitive, brave, smart and a little bit flawed. The relationship she has with her partner is great and really added to the depth of the book. I think I knew early on who was responsible for Lola Jades disappearance but had no idea why or how. There are some great nail biting scenes which were brilliant to read and kept you fully engaged with the story. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys a crime drama this one is a bit different which I loved. I will be on the look out for the episode! Thank you for the advanced copy 🙂🙂🙂
This is the first book in The D.I. Jessica Prince series. I loved it. I was drawn in from the beginning. Lola Jade is missing and her parents are going through a messy divorce. There are no clues. D.I Jessica Prince is brought in to the investigation. I can't wait for the next one. Thanks Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book. I would highly recommend it.
