I am a huge fan of Rachel’s Hawkins and this novel was simply adorable. I could not get enough of the royal teen romance and all its bits of laughter and romance. A must read for fans of Meghan and Harry
Loved this fun YA romance. Rachel Hawkins has a great sense of humor, and this book featured fun characters, revisionist Scottish history, and plenty of swoon.
Daisy Winters is a teen from Florida who loves sci-fi, has a job beside school in a supermarket, likes to dye her hair in different colors, and she has an older sister who is at the brink of being engaged to the Scottish crown prince Alex. Daisy hates that due to her sister, she is also in the spotlights, the tabloids and in the public eye from now on. And to make things worse, she is forced now to spend her summer with her sister at the Scottish court. This lands her in some clumsy sitations with the royals With the help of Miles, the super snobby friend of the younger brother of the crown prince, she has to learn how to act according to the royal norm. But what if that same younger brother is acting anything but the royal norm, causes a scandal and is taking Daisy with it? While she tries to do anything that is asked of her, her struggles become bigger discovers some pretty tricky royal secrets...
This is a perfect read for everyone who loves The Princess Diaries, altough the setting and tone is somewhat different. I guess this book was a little inspired by recent royal events, as for the wedding of Harry and Meghan. The storyline was good. As in many YA books, the main character has a spunky streak and isn't quite in for what she is supposed to do because of her family. I really liked how she pushed herself through all the royal mess and tried to make the best of it. What started off between her an Miles was just very cute! What I did felt about this book that at some points the story fell a little flat. There just wasn't that much conflict or something at the later part of the book, except for some clumsy moments and the royal secrets that where discovered, but those didnt develop or progress further.
Overall, the book was light and good. It's nothing new, but it was entertaining for a few hours.
This book is so much fun and perfect so anyone with royal fever! I loved the main character and how witty and clever she was. Having it set in Scotland was also great. I would love if this became a series because I want to read more about this family!
I liked this book but really did expect more from it. At the time of downloading this title, I was in the mood for a royal romance thanks to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding. However, what I loved most about this was the sisterly bond between the MC and her sister as well as the overall resolution of the story.
WHAT I LIKED:
I'm a big sucker for anything royalty. And I read this book just as the same time Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle, so I had all the royal fluffy feelings all over me.
I loved the premise of the story. It reminded me of Princess Diaries, but unlike Princess Mia, Daisy was smacked right into the royalty scene because her sister was marrying the Prince of Scotland. I loved Daisy's snarky attitude too. Miles was okay, a little aloof here, a bit charming there.
It was a lighthearted read and Rachel Hawkins knows her fluff.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
Amidst all the fluff, it was very confusing at times. I was listening to the audiobook as I was reading it on my phone and the thing that made me really confused was that while Prince Sebastian clearly had a Scottish accent, his brother Prince Alex had a British accent. Actually, everyone in the Royal family had a Scottish accent, even their friends.
I also kind of wished the setting was just a fictional European country, although I appreciated the references, such as with Mary, Queen of Scots, and even Outlander.
FINAL VERDICT:
Although I had some issues, I still enjoyed this one. It was a little predictable, but still up my alley. I liked how it tackled with family issues and social class, though I wish there was more focus on the actual plot. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves books with royal themes.
5 stars to ROYALS
Honestly: holy crap. I had high expectations for this book, and they were all met and totally exceeded. This is the first book in years that I read straight through. I sat down to read for 30 minutes but next thing I knew, 2 hours had passed and I was finished!
Daisy is a lovely character to follow, and her story was a breath of fresh air. It's light and hopeful and adorable. I highly recommend.

The idea and entertainment value is exactly as it sounds: a fun fluffy romance with Hakwkins' humor. The characters are enjoyable and and the royal world well executed. After reading six other books by her, it did not let me down and for anyone thinking of picking it up: do!
Read on lovelies,

If the upcoming wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is putting you in the mood for even more royal romance, don't miss Royals by Rachel Hawkins, a delightful romp of a book for when you need to bliss out with a light romance starring a sweet and snarky heroine. Daisy Winters is just a typical Florida teen, working at the Sur-N-Sav and saving up for a trip to Key West with her best friend. Her older sister, on the other hand, happens to be marrying a Scottish prince. And when Daisy's lame ex-boyfriend starts tattling to the tabloids, the palace decides that she should stay out of trouble by coming to Scotland for the summer. But of course.
But Daisy's sassy mouth is the flaw in that plan. She insults a member of the royal family, gets photographed with the Prince's brother and finds herself inadvertently starring in tabloid scandals. Enter Miles Montgomery: As a loyal friend of the prince and devoted to the royal family, he's enlisted to pose as her love interest. Fake dating ensues, and to the surprise of literally no one, they end up falling for each other.
The humour this book has is just the one I need to help me out of my slump. I was laughing so hard with all the remarks Daisy throws at whoever because honestly, I can relelate. I also tend to do that when I'm nervous (not as witty as Daisy's of course. Hahaha)
Another reason as to why I decided to continue on with this book is the Writing Style. There's just something into Rachel's writing style that will make you want to read pages after pages. It's just really wonderful how she writes!
The plot? Oh wow! That's really something! Who doesn’t love even just a glimpse of the Royal Life? Well, Daisy didn’t. Af first. But seeing her adventures in and out of the palace is just really fascinating to read about. And yeah, yeah, I know it's unrealistic but who cares? This book is a great escape!
Okay, so, I know that this is YA and romance is obviously present in this book BUT I feel like the romance in this book is not that heavy — WHICH I LOVE. I mean, sure the times we see Daisy and Miles together are swoon worthy but I just appreciate the fact that we don’t see a lot of it that instead of it being swoon worthy, it became cringed worthy. Haha.
The auspicious timing of the publication of this book just weeks before Prince Harry is set to marry Meghan Markle only added to the fun of reading this book. It felt like classic YA in the best way, a more modern Princess Diaries with a fun alternate Scottish history, swoony love interest(s) and characters you'll root for from the first page. I adored this read and I can't wait for the continuing adventures leading up to the wedding!
Daisy is a free spirit, someone who doesn't care what others think about her because she is confident enough in herself (my favorite kind of person ;) Sadly, this isn't going to be the case for Daisy, not when her older sister is engaged to the Crown Prince of Scotland...especially when Ellie invites her overseas to spend time before the wedding.
Upon arrival Daisy is thrust into the unwanted spotlight and pretty soon her antics and some shenanigans that simply involve her are in being aired in the papers and gossip rags and Daisy may just find more than she bargained for.
Hawkins has written a cute story that made me laugh out loud in several parts!
This is not my usual genre, but I picked it up because I was perhaps not-so-subconciously influenced by the upcoming royal wedding, and was looking to shake myself out of a reading rut.
And you know what? It was a darn delight! I finished it in one day.
It's a twist on the commoner-girl-marries-royalty plot, elevated by the excellently snarky voice of the main character. There's nothing too deep here, and the sovereignty of Scotland is never explained - in fact, Scotland is really just a backdrop, this story could be transplanted to just about any other country with hardly any tweaking and it would work fine.
But it doesn't pretend, or need to be any of that to be fun. There's snappy dialogue, ridiculous paparazzi drama, and lots of excellent back-and-forth flirting. It's a silly, soapy, compulsively readable summer YA romance, perfect for the beach or as a fun book to blow off steam.
This book, guys. This book. If you’ve never read Rachel Hawkins before (like me, prior to Royals), you are DEFINITELY missing out.
First, I must admit, that while I love a good love story, and I find the British Royal family mildly interesting from time to time, I am by no means a connoisseur of royal romances. That said, if every royal romance is like Royals, someone should make me a list, STAT. In fact, if anyone reading this knows of books that leave you laughing like this one, feel free to reach out to me on Twitter with titles.
Royals is the story of a teenage Floridian, born to British parents who traded in the monarchy for a life in the colonies. How fitting, then, that their eldest daughter would fall for a prince, and find herself swept up in the magic and turmoil that life as a royal brings. Enter Daisy, who has not fallen for a prince, but finds herself whisked away to a life of castles and protocol for a long summer anyway. And what a summer it will be.
Let’s kick this review off with a warning:
Once you pick up Royals you aren’t going to want to put it down. And you might want to read it in semi-privacy, or at least around people that won’t mind when you cackle-laugh at the top of your lungs. I lost count of how many times Daisy’s running commentary had me absolutely dying with laughter, and that was just the things running through her head. What comes out of her mouth is even better.
Then, there’s the shenanigans that the Royal Wreckers get up to. I don’t want to spoil any of the fun that this group of miscreants pull Daisy into, but rest assured that when there’s an untamed crew of rich, spoiled, boarding school boys running free during their summer break, insanity ensues. You don’t want to miss it.
Okay, all the jokes and witty banter aside, this book is ultimately about more than just romancing royals and the people that surround them. Daisy experiences a tiny morsel of the winding maze of protocol and finery that her sister is trying to navigate. And while for much of the book you may find yourself wanting to elbow Ellie and remind her that her family didn’t sign up for all this nonsense, by the end, you’ll see that the Winters girls won’t wander too far from family.
In addition to the antics and sister-drama, Daisy finds herself in a bit of a semi-forbidden, enemies-to-lovers situation, and how she handles it will have you flipping pages faster than a master chef flips pancakes. I absolutely fell for the authenticity of Daisy Winters. She swept me into her world and kept me invested through the end. I hope that everyone who reads this book becomes just as captivated as I was.
I had never read Rachel Hawkins before, but you can rest assured as soon as my fingers stop typing this review, I will run off to my library’s online catalog and see just how many of her books I can get my hands on at once. There will be re-reads of Royals for sure, especially when I am in need of a laugh, but I need to know the rest of the characters that have been born of Rachel Hawkins’ genius.
Not to mention that I may or may not have spent at least an hour scouring every Rachel Hawkins-related page on the internet to see if she has any plans for more books in the Royals universe. There are so many delightful young men populating the world that I would LOVE to see be tamed (just a little bit) by love.
Whether this is an absolute stand alone or not, you definitely don’t want to miss out on Daisy Winters and her crazy Scottish summer. Read Royals. Listen to Royals. Be absorbed by Royals. Then go sing its praises from the highest rooftop you can find.
Daisy Winters is a normal, 16 year old Floridian living in blissful obscurity until, her sister gets engaged to a Scottish prince. Hilariously funny, ridiculously charming, and just great fun to read! Royal watchers and YA romance readers alike are going to enjoy this one. Hand selling this will be easy. Thank you!
I had high hopes for this one, but the craziness of this royal family was too much. I didn't find much that I like about Daisy and found it a bit bothersome that as she accused her sister of making everything about her, Daisy was doing the same thing.
Then there was the "romance" with Miles. Neither he or Daisy made it easy on each other, so it didn't feel genuine that suddenly at the end the romance would pop up.
I have loved Rachel Hawkins' books for awhile. They're just so fun. And then I started reading her #sexyhistory threads and got pumped up for Royals and it did not disappoint me. It's such a delight and so funny just like her previous books and #sexyhistory I'm so excited for this book to come out, and I hope everyone enjoys it like I did.
