The publisher was kind enough to provide me with a copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own and honest.

I must admit I was very disappointed in this book. I thought it would provide more information about how to do different hand letting but really it is more geared towards just providing examples and inspiration. I am a beginner and had no clue where to start with many of the designs. I thought this book would give better step-by-step instructions but there are only a few times that they do. This book would be fine for those with experience that are in need of ideas but it doesn't work well for beginners.

Loved the selection on illuminated letters! This was a great guide to hand lettering, though it probably would have been much easier to use and follow in print edition instead of in electronic since my kindle made it format oddly sometimes. But it was fun to play with, to flip around and enjoy and following the examples was a breeze for me.

Well written guide to hand lettering - thanks NetGalley for the ARC. The writing was straight forward. The photos and drawings always were helpful. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn hard lettering.

As hand lettering books go, this is a good beginner to intermediate guide. Lots of useful information inside. However, the advanced hand letterer will not find much that has not been done before. If you have patrons who are fans of Joanne Sharpe and Dina Wakely, this would be a positive addition to your collection.

I already owned a previous work by Gabri Joy Kirkendall. I am a fan of her style and how easy to follow her books are. My hand lettering has improved dramatically thanks to her!

This was a great read to get familiar with the basics of new and old hand lettering for crafts, planners, journals and even wedding invitations. I gave only 3 stars because of the way it was formatted on my paperwhite. But to be honest, I will definitely own this book in print!!

Hand Letting is something that I am always wanting to improve on. I am told that I have nice handwriting but for scrapbooking puroses being able to do fancy lettering is something that I always want to try. I also love fonts so this book was perfect for me to look at with all of the different techniques for writing cool things as well as some info on fonts. The book is a creative exploration of contemporary handwriting, typography and illustrated typeface. Definitely a lot of fun to check out.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

I’m just beginning to dabble in hand lettering and calligraphy, and I thought this would be a great book to help me. However, it was only nominally informative and not very instructive at all.

While I learned about different styles of lettering and the characteristics of them, the book only included a few examples of the letters in each style. Calligraphy is a visual art, and a book that does not include the necessary visuals to replicate the art isn’t very helpful. I really felt like the book was only 30% complete because it lacked the complete alphabets. I would also have liked to have read about tricky letters in each style and how to overcome those difficulties. This will not be a book I add to my collection.

I gratefully received this book as an eARC from the author, publisher, and NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.

Ok I'm honestly not sure how i feel about this book...I wanted something to help me learn lettering. but this just seemed to give to much info...I know thats not really a bad thing but when your just starting out do you really want to know all the names of the parts of a letter

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I was notified by Netgalley that I could review this book today Feb 22nd. I went in to download it and it was archived. So No feedback will be given other than this. Can't review a book you can't see

First, I want to say thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a PDF of this book. First, I would like to say that it was not what I was expecting. I would say this is more of an art book than hand lettering. It has some cool history of some fonts/letters but there's really not much on "how to" for the project aspect of this book. There's not much of that. So if you are beginner, definitely stay clear of this book. It will overwhelm and not help you at all. If you are an advanced artist, this would probably be cool for you. A good way to embellish your hand lettering as is. It's cool looking but I wouldn't find it relevant to me because I need more practice and tips.

There is a lot of information packed into this short (64-page) book. It is very informative about a variety of different scripts, giving the history, defining characteristics and examples of each, as well as names for the different parts of any script. When I say informative, I don't mean dry or heavy by any stretch of the imagination.

What it doesn't provide, that I was expecting (and I imagine most readers will also expect) is a full example of each script - A to Z in both upper and lower case. Therefore, for those looking to play at different types of lettering, this will be of minimal help. It would be fun to have the scripts in front of you and see if you can duplicate them, adding in your own style.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Thunder Bay Press for allowing me to read and review an e-ARC of this book.

Being a rather novice letterer (?) myself, I was very intrigued by this book with its promise of "how-to sections" and "practice techniques." Unfortunately, I didn't find these all that helpful.

There's an introductory section with information about the parts of a letter, the history of typography, etc., followed by sections of several "families" of lettering with bulleted lists of their common traits. These were pretty interesting, and included many examples for inspiration.

However the final section, with a handful of "step-by-step" tutorials, was pretty useless to me as a beginner. They sort of show you the steps of what they're doing, but it's things like, "draw the outline of the letter" (accompanied by an image of the completed outline of a fancy letter), "start drawing in your design" (accompanied by an image of the outline all filled in with a complex drawing of about a billion individual flowers), etc. If you can follow these, you probably don't need them. If you need them, you probably can't "just" up and draw all this nice artwork in without any help.

I was hoping for something more like "write your basic letters," "add serifs," "outline each letter"...something step-by-step for CREATING letters, not just ideas for what types of embellishments to add to fancy letters I (can't) already draw.

I received this e-book ARC through Net Galley from Printers Row Publishing Group in exchange for a truthful review.

This 65 page book was a pretty quick read.
I think the book is geared more towards inspiring a more intermediate-to-advanced artist, since there aren't many hand-holding examples of lettering. Rather the book is more of an interesting survey of the history of hand lettering and various styles, plus a few exercises to awaken your creativity.

My favorite section was on illuminating lettering: this section had the most step-by-step examples.

On page 60 there is mention of a website where you can download 64-pages of bonus content on additional lettering projects with step-by-step instructions, and this website does have nice projects to try.

Hand Lettering by Gabri Joy Kirkendall, and Jaclyn Escalera is an enlightening book on the art of letter design. I received a digital project book to review, but the purchased version is stated to include a dozen artist markers and a drawing pencil. This would be great to have the supplies need to get started right away.

Ten different types of styles are examined in this book. However, many variations of each style are given. For example, ten different ones are given for the coastal style. In addition it has other techniques such as calligraphy, illuminated and negative lettering show with step-by-step instruction.

I found this book to be interesting. However, while it says it is for the beginner to the expert, I found the art of lettering to still be a challenging for a beginner like me.

‘Hand Lettering’ by Gabri Joy Kirkendall, Jaclyn Escalera. When I saw the title Hand Lettering, I
was so excited that I would learn how to do all those gorgeous lettering techniques you see all over. The beginning of the book offers a short introduction about different lettering terms and the history of hand lettering. The authors then present different lettering styles. Each style is poorly represented by just a few examples. Every time I flipped the page I was waiting for the area that had more instructions on how to make the different styles. Nope. Nothing here. I could have been under the wrong assumption but I was hoping to learn how to ‘Hand Letter’. I was expecting to see whole pages of examples to practice. To the authors credit is some online bonus content which should have been included in the book.

I would like to thank NetGalley, authors Gabri Joy Kirkendall, Jaclyn Escaler and Printers Row Publishing Group and Thunder Bay Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A mild introduction to typography, Hand Lettering will wet your appetite for creating beautiful works with lead or ink. I am reviewing an ebook version so I can not comment on the items included with the art set but the book is quite short. The pages are filled with a variety of fonts and styles and there is almost a sense of being bombarded with color.and texture because each formed letter is dressed up as an example. Considering the bit of history that is introduced with each letter type, this would be perfect for a beginner, like my granddaughter who would love learning how to create the illuminated lettering shown. Full Disclosure: I was allowed to read a copy of this book for free as a member of NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review. The opinions I have expressed are my own and I was not influenced to give a positive review.

I was given the opportunity to read this for review by the publisher, and Net Galley.

When I requested it, I didn't realize it was part of a kit. I don't feel like I can give a completely fair review, which is why my rating is right down the middle. I only have seen the digital copy of the workbook. I cannot tell you what quality the paper or pens ar, or anything else about the kit. I haven't seen it in stores yet. I can only tell you what I think of the info included in the thin book.

With that said, for such a thin book, there is a lot of good info that some other hand lettering books don't really cover.

As someone for whom art is a favorite hobby, I really liked this book as an art project tool. I had some trouble getting it to show up completely on my kindle but the portion I did get was excellent.
