Jennifer Ashley's Shifter Unbound series are always a great read and this book is no different. She has great characters and amazing world building and she never disappoints. Highly recommend this book to all paranormal readers.

I received an arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted to love this book but I ended up just liking it. I didn't realize when I requested it that it was book 11 in the series so I felt like I was probably missing some cameos and subtext that I just didn't catch coming into the series so late but that's not the books fault.

This book does have multiple layers to it. There's shifting loyalties, politics, and romance. Plenty to keep anyone interested.

What I did enjoy is Tamsin's character in the beginning, she is cocky and sneaky and brilliant which is all my favorite things for a heroine to be. But I felt like she got caught up in Angus' web too quick. She became just a little diluted from how her character is first introduced.

If I recommended this book it would be to start from the beginning of the series and not stumble into book 11 without knowing like I did.

Midnight Wolf is a decent PNR read. Nothing super outstanding about it, but if you like PNR it'll hit the spot.

Tamsin is wanted by the Shifter Bureau but they can’t seem to catch her so they kidnap and hold Angus’s cub Ciarian to force him to go after her. Tamsin is a fiery redhead who can slip by you in a blink of an eye which Angus learns very quickly, but somehow he always seems to find her. Angus is very leery of Tamsin but something about her version of the story seems to ring true in his head but he cannot figure out why. Angus along with Tamsin and with his cast of friends travel a good ways to find his cub and answers to a lot of questions.
I love when Shifter stories seem to mimic real life and how the problems are the same only with some excitement thrown in.

Gena Showalter has seriously got it going on. She continues to amaze me with her ability to weave together amazing stories with such a huge and diverse cast of characters. When I saw she had published another book I jumped at the chance to get my greedy hands on it. Seriously, I am hooked on all things, Gena Showalter.

Now before I fully start this review let me start by saying that I have not read the full extent of the Lords of the Underworld series. I've read a few, but not all. I wanted to clarify since I have seen quite a few reviews that have some upset readers with who Gillian ends up with. SPOILERS: I was not dedicated to her being shipped with William so I wasn't upset when she ended up with Puck.

Now onto the story. Gilliam was given a potion to give her immortality by a friend and it almost killed her. Her best friend and man she loves William refuses to tie his life to hers to save her. Enter Puck who has been betrayed by his brother and cursed with the Demon Indifference. Puck receives news of the prophecy that he needs William and Gilliam to win back his kingdom. So, Puck gets Gilliam to marry and bond to him and saves her life.

I don't want to give the whole story away so I'll cut off my summary there.

I liked Puck and Gilliam, both separately and as a couple. After Puck has to leave for a couple Earth days and 500 years in his time I loved how Gilliam grew to be such a strong and sassy force of nature. She finally got the strength to do what she wanted and ultimately choose who she wanted. While I may get some crap for this, I totally agreed with Gilliam's decision not to choose William over Puck. I wouldn't have wanted anyone who had sex with literally anything that walked while "waiting for me." I couldn't have done it and I think that for her character it made sense. Puck never looked at or sought after anyone else after they met and I don't think that was just due to Indifference. Plus, Gilliam didn't put up with Puck's crap.

I really enjoyed this story. I'm excited to see what happens next. I loved the action parts of the story a lot. It wasn't just a romance story. I always love a well-balanced story that has character development, amazing characters, a unique-ish storyline, and enjoyable inner and outer dialogue. The Darkest Warrior has all of that. A definite must-read in my opinion. Also, I enjoy how you can read all of these as a stand-alone. While some character plots would be confusing, it doesn't set the stories back in any way. I think it simply makes me want to read the rest of the books.

Midnight Wolf is the story of Angus, the wolf shifter who bounces at a bar in New Orleans. We haven’t really seen a whole lot of the New Orleans shifter town, so we are introduced to some new characters.

Angus is know as a great tracker and that is what brings Shifter Bureau to his doorstep. They want him to track a shifter who they have been unable to catch. Normally helping Shifter Bureau would be the last thing Angus would do, but they have taken his son, leaving him with no choice but to complete the job assigned to him.

We start to run into all kinds of problems when Angus does catch up with his quarry. Tamsin is fast, and sneaky. But there is also a pull between the two. After he catches her she has a medical need and Angus feels compelled to have her healed before turning her over to Shifter Bureau. But it keeps getting harder and harder to fight the urge to protect her. I was so excited during this period as they are hiding out at the sentient house and it does all kind of crazy things allowing certain people in and only certain people out. We also see some other shifters and possibly a goblin(?) come to help out Angus and Tamsin.

Angus is a smart wolf, and he starts to pull together a plan that can make both him and Tamsin happy. There starts a fantastic race across state lines. The more Angus tries to do to protect Tamsin, the more he realizes that she has secrets that have more than just Shifter Bureau chasing her down.

I loved the pace of Midnight Wolf. Tamsin is a great, fiery character that you can’t help to love. Angus is the brooding, hard to read shifter that takes a little pushing to get his feelings known. You can’t help but love him as well though. His past is so unhappy you just really cheer for him and Tamsin. Tamsin’s human personality and abilities match her animal’s so perfectly, making her a fiesty match for Angus.

The cover they choose for being on the run is such a great idea. Yet we still get to see an important shifter pulled in to help. I’m loving that about this series. I always get to see someone else from the series. I was a little surprised by one characters declaration of alliances, but then again, he is someone that cannot be led.

Midnight Wolf is a great, exciting story of a couple on the run, developing their romance along the way. Having Angus’s son along for the ride does help bring the two a little closer and the family dynamic really made you root for this couple even more. It was truly a fun book!

The narration of Midnight Wolf was just as great as expected for a Cris Dukehart narration. I’ve loved her throughout this whole series. She does a wonderful job with the pacing and keeping the adrenaline pumping through the book.

Jennifer Ashley's "Midnight Wolf" is a fun spring/summer read. As someone who's a casual fan of the series, you don't necessarily have to read all the previous books to enjoy this one (because I haven't), but it does help since there are a few things that might not make sense without that context.

Tamsin, our heroine, is fun and feisty, and I'm a sucker for those kinds of characters being paired with the kind of gruff, taciturn heroes like Angus. The secondary cast of characters are great and there's enough action and adventure to keep you wondering what's going to happen next.

I don't know that it was about this book, but I just couldn't get into it as much as I tried. The characters didn't engage my interest nor did the story line. As an avid reader of PNR and shifter romance novels, it saddened me to have to give up on a book that I thought would start me down the path of reading a new author.

Truly enjoyed this book, and now I know that I need to go back to the author's other books and read more!

Midnight Wolf is a story I have been definitely looking forward to reading all year and I had a blast with this book. Now I won't say its my favorite book of the series, however this book was SMASHING it all the ways that Jennifer Ashley writes a romance. I can never get enough of her writing, and Midnight Wolf, was so wonderful and easy to read. I read through this book so quickly and now I am saddened that the story is over and I will have to wait for the next book for more of this world of the Shifters Unbound.

Our story begins with our hero, Angus is a bouncer shifter for a bar in New Orleans, he is a father to his son and Angus is a single parent. When officers from the Shifter Bureau kidnaps his son and will only free him if Angus hunts down a lone collarless shifter, a woman that slips through their fingers and they need an expert. And Angus is one of the best shifter trackers. Angus doesn't want to have to hunt down a fellow shifter however his son is more important to Angus than anything or anyone else in the world and he will do anything to protect him. Tamsin is quite the fox, who keeps on slipping through Angus' grasp, but Angus is determined and once he has Tamsin in his grasp, he doesn't want to let her go. Angus and his son become enamoured with Tamsin who is craft yet kind and courageous.

I simply loved this book so much. The bantering between Tamsin and Angus was so delightful and I adored the snarky humor that Ashley makes so entertaining for her readers and this book was no exception. And Angus' son was a HOOT!! He is so frank and never afraid to say what is exactly on his mind. And he is quite the matchmaker for Angus and Tamsin. He sees the good qualities of Tamsin instantly, and becomes quite protective of her.

The plot and worldbuilding was fantastic, I really liked seeing these two try to survive while being on the run from those that want Tamsin for not so good reasons. And we get some new shifter characters we meet that I found so fun and maybe a future romance for one of my favorite side characters "ben"---I WANT his story so very badly. And of course we get some delightful interaction with Tiger of course, LOVE seeing him being an active participant through the series since he is my favorite all time character of the series.

I found the romance that builds between Angus and Tamsin to be so full of emotion and you find yourself captivated by their story. They are up against some bad odds, but stand together and the chemistry is off the charts. I loved ALL the feels we get from these two in learning and fighting to stay together and be mated. We also see the complexities from loner shifters and living in a shiftertown and the complex dynamics that cause some conflict in their story.

Overall I found Midnight Wolf to be such an amazing read and a quick trip through this wonderful world of shifters and humans and fae and the complexities of magic and science....ENTHRALLING!!!

Jennifer Ashley always creates a good story. The eleventh book in the Shifter Unbound series, Midnight Wolf is no exception to that rule. Ashley takes us back to the world of shifters, fae and humans interacting together but not really on the same side. A war is brewing and every book seems to be leading up to it. Long time readers of the series will find this one intriguing for a lot of reasons and new readers won't feel like they've missed too much. Great characters, exceptional world building. A great paranormal series and book.

What I liked:

This is a series I have really enjoyed along the way. Ashley has a way with building a world that is creative, unique and full of surprises. The Shifter Unbound series is based on the premise of the fae creating shifters as battle weapons which got out of hand. Now that the shifters have been exposed to the human population the fae have regained a bit of their power by effectively limiting shifters to 'shiftertowns' and reducing their primal urges by controlling them with collars. This sounds harsh and it is. But doesn't it remind you of how our own culture treats those who are different? It's a paranormal version of our own stupidity in some ways. And I think Ashley does a remarkable job of making her novels entertaining with frighteningly realistic undertones.

Angus and Tamsin meet under some unusual circumstances. Angus is being forced to hunt Tamsin down because she is uncollared and has information that the Shifter Bureau wants. It isn't what the tracker would like to be doing with his time, but they are using his son as leverage to make him cooperate. I loved the fact that Tamsin is fierce and strong willed. She is defying the rules by remaining uncollared. You can tell that there is unrest among the shifters over the collar situation and this is just the beginning. She isn't letting the powers that be rule her life and she was an amazing character. I was glad that Ashley gave her a lot of the characteristics you would expect from a fox shifter. Clever, sneaky, and full of sass.

Angus is a father to the core. He would do anything to protect his son, even if it means hunting down a woman he eventually falls for. I enjoyed the way Angus and Tamsin not only interact together but also the way they interact with Angus' son. The relationships that develop between them as a family were some of my favorite moments of the story. When Angus gets to the point that he knows he can't turn her in, the adventure begins. I really loved the setting for this book as it doesn't stick to the shiftertowns. There are some big top moments that readers are sure to love.

What I didn't like:

Personally, I really enjoyed this addition to the series. There isn't much I didn't like, but I understand that for some readers may not like the idea that shifters allowed themselves to be put in this situation in the first place. While agree that, that is true in this series, there were reasons for that, which you learn more about if you read the entire series. This is a stand alone novel but you really miss out on a lot of the background information and world building by not reading the others. I highly recommend them. Good stuff!

Bottom Line:

This is a good book. Readers who have followed the series for a long time will love revisiting old characters as well as come cool locations. The setting for this one is exception. I really enjoyed being out of shiftertown and on the run. Adventure abounds. Tamsin was one of my favorite female characters in the entire series. So sassy and true to shifter form. I thought the romance was hot but not overdramatic or too forward. The family situation including Angus's son made this one stand out. A very good novel!

Tamsin Calloway, an uncollared shifter, has flown under the radar for years. When she witnesses a brutal murder, she finds herself on the run from the shifter bureau and a relentless tracker.

Angus Murray enjoys two things in life, his job as a bouncer for a New Orleans shifter bar and his young cub. When the shifter bureau kidnaps his son to force him to track a rogue shifter, Angus unwilling agrees and the big bad wolf is on the hunt.

Tamsin will not go quietly into the night though and leads Angus is on a merry chase. Soon the chase becomes more as an unwanted attraction blooms between them…but Angus will do anything to get his son back. Even if it means giving up his mate.

Midnight Wolf is the eleventh book in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifter’s Unbound series. Continuing to expand upon the existing arc, fans may notice that the tone has changed a bit since White Tiger. New shifters with different loyalties and views are coming out of the woods along with some familiar faces who won’t and don’t play nicely with Dylan Morrissey, the self-proclaimed King of the Shifters. These can be read as standalone though I don’t recommend; you lose out on character and world comprehension along with the arc development by not starting from the beginning.

Ashley picks up a side plot and character that was introduced in Wild Things. Angus Murray lost everything (his mate, job, status…) when his radical brother’s plans were revealed and he was forced to help Kendrick (White Tiger) take him out. A grumpy tracker who bounces at the local shifter bar, Angus now keeps to himself while raising his son. His story bursts out the gate and firm pacing push it along as Ashley builds a romance on the fly while digging into the main conflict to expose the true motivations beneath it. Action, mayhem, and humor keep the reader engaged.

Tamsin Calloway is a new character whose mischievousness and love of life is a perfect match to Angus’ taciturn nature. Born free, she refused to turn herself in to be collared and stayed on the run until she fell in with Angus’ brother, Gavin. Realising Gavin was insane, she left but not before two agents for the shifter bureau were killed and she was blamed. She knows why the bureau wants her and it spells her death.

Ashley uses Angus and Tamsin’s adventure to introduce new allies and enemies; divulging deeper into the background of the fae and adding another layer to its already convoluted world. A sexy slow burning romancer spiked with laughter and antagonism offers Tamsin and Angus both a chance at redemption and forgiveness. I love how Tamsin teased and poked at Angus. Morrissey’s back and demanding as ever though Angus is no pushover. We meet a carnival owning bear and his lovely shifter wife. Ben plays a pivotal role in here as does Zander and Tiger. We learn more about the next civil war with the fae and the tricks they are using to bring shifters back under their rule.

A strong ending resolves the main conflict in an interesting fashion while leaving readers with plenty of questions of what’s to come. Though on the quieter side with a heavier focus on the romance then the arc, it was still an engaging read and perfect for paranormal romance fans who enjoy earthy heroes and heroines who more than deserve their happily ever after.

Another amazing book from Jennifer Ashley. I think they just keep getting better. I liked Angus from previous books and I still loved him in this one. It is interesting to see how this series is evolving. I liked the dynamics between him and Tamson. And some of my favorite characters return to help them out. But I think Tiger is still my favorite and I am eagerly awaiting his next book.

Shifters Unbound #11. Man, I love this series. Jennifer Ashley’s writing is always so consuming, I open the book and I’m sucked into the work of shifters, fae, and humans. The characters in this book, Angus and Tamsin, both have quite a bit of character growth through the book. Angus and Tamsin start off one way; Angus very stern and quite, very set in his ways and willing to do just about anything for his son, Ciaran. While Tamsin an uncollared shifter on the run still maintains a very optimistic view on the world except when it comes to collars and Shiftertowns she is dead set against them and will argue even though she's heard both sides of the argument she's never understood why until Angus and Ciaran. These two opposites balance each other out and bring out the best in each other, and Ciaran (I just love that name) is such a cute kid, so open and honest. I enjoyed the story and think you can probably read this as a stand-alone but there is enough past book stuff to tantalize you into reading the other books, at least the last two or three books.

Angus Murray is a scowling and grumpy shifter when he’s not working as a bouncer he is raising his cub, Ciaran. Angus’ brother, Gavan, was an idiot who tried to go against the Shifter Bureau and it ended in his own death as well as that of Angus’ mate. Angus had nothing to do with his brother’s movement but still managed to lose his position in the pack and even though he has proved his worthiness time and time again he still can't get his place back as second. Tamsin Calloway has managed to avoid detection, she’s been lucky enough that she always manages to escape undetected or leave just before something goes wrong. But the death of two Bureau agents has finally brought her into the spotlight and now a sinister Bureau agent has his sights set on Tamsin.

Agent Haider kidnaps Ciaran and forces Angus to hunt down Tamsin or else he’ll never see his son again. Finding her was easy enough it’s catching her that gave Angus trouble and if the alligator hadn’t of caught her first Tamsin would have probably gotten away. Tamsin, now severely injured, has no choice but to go with Angus, instead of taking her straight to the Bureau he takes her to Ben and the sentient house (I so love this house!) and calls Zander down to heal her, while he comes up with a plan. There is no choice in not turning her in because of Ciaran but that doesn’t mean she can escape right after the hand off. It doesn’t quite go as planned once Haider admits to Tamsin that he plans to dissect her to find out how she works. Now all three of them, Angus, Tamsin, and Ciaran are on the run. They end up with an uncollared shifter, Dante (who I can picture as Jason Momoa) and his half fae/half human mate, who run a carnival and travel with them for some time.

The attraction between Tamsin and Angus is pretty much instantaneous but it takes them a bit before they act on it and I loved that; the teasing and the sexual chemistry made when they finally did get together so much better. Angus mate claims Tamsin in order to protect her but afterwards he realizes just how much he wants her to stay in his life. Once Tamsin completely trusts Angus she reveals the reason everyone if after her, and together with their friends Ben, Zander, and Tiger they must figure out what to do about this and make it to where the only ones who want Tamsin are Angus and Ciaran.

Overall, I positively loved this book, it’s not my favorite of the series but it’s really up there in the list. The characters are fantastic and of course it’s the strong silent type for me again Angus really fits the bill for a book boyfriend. Tamsin is so wonderfully optimistic even when her life is falling apart she still singing along to the radio and smiling. I am so happy that Ben is going to get his HEA finally

The eleventh novel in the New York Times bestselling paranormal romance series, Shifters Unbound.

Angus Murray, bouncer for a New Orleans Shifter bar, is sent to round up an elusive, Collar-less Shifter woman, Tamsin Calloway, who is causing trouble for Shifter Bureau, and possesses information they want. If Angus refuses, he risks losing his cub. He finds Tamsin but she's slippery and not about to be rounded up quietly.

In fact, quiet is nothing Tamsin will ever be. She leads Angus on a wild chase, but he's determined to bring her in to save his son.

Can Tamsin convince Angus she's worth helping before she's locked away by Shifter Bureau, Collared, or perhaps killed?

Review:

I know I am late to the game and this is book number eleven in the series, but I have been meaning to read this Author and am now getting the chance. I was never lost reading this book out of series order. The Author did a great job of getting me acquainted with this world and the cast of characters.

I loved that Angus is father, trying to keep his son safe. He is strong and has a great moral compass and of course super attractive. Tamsin is a fighter, she tough and smart, a deadly package. I felt so bad that she has been so alone for so long. Once Angus and Tamsin cross paths, it is all action, romance and fun. I loved the escaping to the carnival part in the story. I thought that was a great idea and enjoyed it, plus it gave Tamsin and Angus time to come together as a couple.

I really enjoyed the Author's writing style. She has the right mix elements to make the story engaging and exciting. I now want to go back read the other books in the series.

4Stars

More Shifter surprises!

Just when you think you have a handle on all things Shifter, Fae and everything else in between, Ashley throws in another surprise.
Midnight Wolf has that and more. Angus Murray is the strong silent type whose backed into a corner when the Shifter Bureau seizes his cub in exchange for his tracking skills. His instructions are to find a rogue shifter and bring her back to them.
Of course everything is not as simple as it seems. Tasmin Calloway is more than Angus expects. We meet old friends and make new ones. Angus' son Ciaran is just wonderful, as is his interaction with Tamsin. That's of course not even going anywhere near the Sparks that fly between Tamsin and Angus!
Another sensational episode from Ashley's Shifter realm!

A NetGalley ARC

Midnight Wolf is book 11 of the shifters Unbound series by Jennifer Ashley. While I have not read one of these book in a while, I had no problem jumping right back into the series. Background on the Shifter Bureau comes out early as the Bureau blackmails Angus into going after Tamsin. No confusion here, the Shifter are not unbound nor is the Bureau good. So from the beginning lines are drawn and you are rooting for Tamsin even though only hearsay is known along with a grainy photo.

An enticing beginning that heats up as the story continues. Action, romance, big bad shifter male and intelligent resourceful female made this an addictive read. Cat and mouse chases, sizzling romance and exciting action scenes, Midnight Wolf is paranormal romance at its best.

I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley for an honest review.

I love the Shifters Unbound series and Midnight Wolf was a good addition to the series. The characters and story line are well-developed. Tamsin is a collarless shifter who has been on the run almost all her life. Now she is caught and on her way to the Shifter Bureau. Angus is a bouncer and father. When he tries to turn down the offer to capture Tamsin and bring her in, he refuses. The Bureau kidnaps his son to get him to co-operate with them. When all is said and done, Angus decides to not turn her in. The end up asking for help from some shifters to help get his cub back. You will see some familiar faces like Tiger, Dylan. Sean, and a few others. I really enjoyed this book, and recommend it to everyone. I give Midnight Wolf (A Shifters Unbound Novel) 5/5 stars.
