Brenda L. Thomas presents a mix of passion and intrigue but falls short of fully captivating its audience. While the premise of a tragic New Year's Eve shooting and an amnesiac doctor adds suspense to the plot, the execution lacks the depth needed to make it a truly engrossing read. Although the story touches on themes of reinvention and temptation, the overall delivery left me wanting more from the characters and their development. It's an enjoyable enough read for romance enthusiasts seeking a quick thrill, but may not leave a lasting impression. (3.5 Stars)
This book was terrible from the start. I should have just dnf it when I was not enjoying it. But I needed to know what was going on since everything was confusing and annoying at the same time.
Okay, 'Every New Year' is an erotic novella. I was in the dark about that. I don't read erotica or graphic romance books. However, I did enjoy the story. It was interesting to learn that the interest Cynthia found in penises (the male anatomy) in school is what propelled her to become a Urologist. Cynthia could also size up a man's penis in his pants quite easily. It's a quick entertaining read.
I really enjoyed this quick read. at the doctor's office, and got mad because they called me on time, lol. I hope the author is planning on writing a full-length book for these characters. This is a re-release. I received a copy of the book for an honest review.

Dr. Cynthia Lampley is in a mediocre relationship with a man she isn't sure is right for her. All set to go on a New Year's vacation, Cynthia ends up in a car accident and finds herself in the hospital, under the care of Dr. Strohmile. Amnesia hits her and she ends up having a New Year that she'll always remember.
I struggled with writing this review, because I really wanted to like this story, but in the end it just wasn't for me. I had a difficult time with the main character, Cynthia. She was a bit ridiculous. She's stuck up and doesn't seem to be too concerned about maintaining professionalism in her career. I think the author had an opportunity to turn Cynthia's one-track mind into something funny and entertaining, but it unfortunately didn't go that direction and her inner monologue came off a bit outlandish.
I don't want to spoil anything that comes in the story for those who may read it, but I had a tough time with some of what happened in the hospital too. It felt too unrealistic for me. I also didn't dig the insta love aspect, because this story was so short that there was no time whatsoever to create a palpable buildup between the characters.
That being said, this did read easy, and I liked the way that the author was able to really put me in the world she wrote about. She did a good job of describing the scene of the story and capturing the feel of the different neighborhoods that were mentioned. And I loved Nurse Rita's character. That woman was funny, and she added a little something special to the story. She's probably the one character that will always stick out for me when I think back on reading Every New Year. This was also a quick read, which was nice. It was just the few things I mentioned above that ended up making this a three star read for me.
Three stars to this novella!
Every New Year was an ok read. Urologist Cynthia finds herself in the hospital after an accident with amnesia. This doesn't stop her from having romantic feelings for the doctor in charge of her care, however. Once she recovers, she has to decide whether to remain with her boyfriend or move on to the good doctor.
Because it is a novella, I read it very quickly. I did, admittedly, skim a lot of the pages because the story was unrealistic and basic.
I really enjoyed this quick read. A great story line with great twists. I didn't expect it to end the way it did. I hope the author is planning on writing another book for these characters. I'm anxious to know what happens next. **This is a re-release. I received a copy of the book for an honest review.**
I enjoy reading books by Brenda Thomas. As soon as you think things calm down, things really start to go crazy and that twist at the end was just jaw dropping. Thank you so much to Net Galley for the ARC
I really struggled with this. book. A lot of the time, I really struggled to get into this novella. The main character irritated me. The romance was forced and unrealistic and it felt like a chore to read.
Noteworthy experiences while reading this book: None, really, as it was too quick of a read

Recommend this book? For lovers of Urban Fiction, it may not be a bad read because it's quick and easy to get through if you just need to escape for an evening.
Notes and Opinions: While I'm not necessarily opposed to romance, erotica, sex, etc. in my reading, I generally go for books focused on other things: character development, world-building, and developing a believable plot - preferably without insta-love. While I might have come to care for the leading lady, Cynthia, given a proper amount of time to get to know her, her development seemed rushed and lacking. As it was, I could tell she was meant to be a strong, intelligent woman, even if I didn't get to see much else from her.
And don't get me started on the fiance, whom she acknowledged to be a controlling jerk who wanted to dictate her life to her and yet still wouldn't leave.
Not romantic.
This is one instance in which I was grateful for the character's amnesia because it gave her a chance to reconnect with herself and reevaluate what she wants AND what she deserves in her relationships and in her life.
The writing was okay enough, but given the nature of the romance in this one, I don't know if I'd opt to read anything else Brenda L. Thomas has written.

When Cynthia Lampley gets amnesia she starts to prove that you may just be someone different if you didn't know who you were. Cynthia needs a change and this chance happening of amnesia may just be the boost she needs to make that change.
This is from an advance review copy for which I thank the publisher.
This was one of four novellas I got from Net Galley centered around the festive season and relationships. All of them were disappointing, I'm sorry to report. The problem was that they were far less romance than they were soft-core porn, and there really wasn't much porn, so what did that leave? In a two words: very little - and nearly all of that was a disappointment. I wish the authors all the best in their careers. I found these stories most saddening because some of these of these writers can write. I just wish they would have reached higher, instead of going solely for the low-hanging fruit.
Note that this is obviously just my opinion, and I'm not normally one for reading his kind of fiction, but I'm curious about all genres and I like to keep up with what's going on in them. It had seemed to me that this was a great opportunity to take in something new and maybe find a new writer to love. I'm sorry it didn't work out.
There seemed to be a common theme among the novellas: that of being single and feeling unloved, or of being in a dysfunctional relationship that the main character had somehow deluded themselves into thinking was the one - or at least was better than nothing! I know how that goes. But the way they 'fixed' their 'problem' was asinine cowardice, not romance.
There was a consistent problem in that all of the characters were so shallow: they were all about fancy clothes and designer shoes and hot sex, and in the case of every one of the women, that hot sex had to be with a tall guy who had an overly-large penis. It was sad to read how juvenile and poorly-focused these people were - and also what poor judges of potential partners they were, and how thoroughly shallow and clueless they were. Not one of them actually deserved a decent relationship because none of them had earned one.
I know this one was supposed to be an erotic novella, but seriously? There really wasn't anything erotic in it. It was a bit creepy actually to discover a doctor preying on his patient. It's entirely inappropriate for a doctor to behave toward any patient like either of these doctors did; both of them ought to be struck-off. Additionally, I don't see a future for two people as shiftless and sexually-obsessed as these two were, so where's the romance? The characters were shallow - not only in how they were written, but also in how they were behaving.
The utter improbability of how they were brought together made the story more of a joke than a worthwhile read. The woman is supposed to be a urologist (I guess), but she's really a sex doctor who's not even in denial. She inappropriately gives her supposedly sexually-malfunctioning patient an erection and is pleased with herself for doing so. She's obsessed with penises, which convinced me that her relationship with this new guy will never last. She's utterly clueless and her attitude to her fiancé sucked, which further led me to believe she's not worth having a relationship with.
She's all set to go on a winter cruise around Hawaii when she gets an emergency call: a couple were having sex and the man had taken not one, but two too many Cialis#reg;. How this got him stuck inside the woman he was being unfaithful with is an unexplained joke. If the novel had been written as a parody or for comedic effect that still would have been tedious, but it wasn't supposed to be funny.
Taking more tadalafil doesn't give you a larger penis such that if you take too much it becomes so large it gets stuck. It's very easy to look up symptoms of an overdose online these days. And note that IVs are not the answer to everything! You don't get one free with every hospital visit! Particularly in this case where the problem was supposed to be too much fluid in a certain organ - you hardly want to stock the patient up on even more fluid!
The author doesn't seem to grasp that the ER doctors have probably handled far more of this kind of situation than the main character ever had. There was no reason whatsoever for this doctor to be called in, so once again we have a very contrived situation, and it gets worse: she's unfaithful to her boyfriend, has unprotected sex with a man whose history she doesn't know and doesn't even think about asking (and she's supposed to be a doctor?). After this, she goes right back to getting it on with her boyfriend. Then she ditches her boyfriend and goes back to the doctor. She's a jerk, period.
The doctor is utterly irresponsible. He doesn't know this woman and she has lost her memory, yet when he prepares a special dinner for her, it consists of a "platter that held two large lobster tails." He doesn't know is she has a sea-food allergy! He doesn't know anything about her. He could have killed her. She might be a vegetarian fro all he knew and would have been disgusted that he had fed her dead animals when her memory returned. His conduct is inexcusable on so many levels. It's not romantic at all. it seems that the author was blindly going for the trope romantic evening without spending an iota of thought on how this particular story needed a better plan.
I didn't like either of the doctors, or her boyfriend, but at least he tried to understand her. For this he's rewarded by being screwed, and not in a good way! This was not a nice Christmas/New Year's story, and I cannot recommend it.
I honestly had a very difficult time finishing this book. Perhaps it was not my type of book. I just could not connect with it.
This was an ok read. Woman in a relationship that has issues, Is set to meet her significant other for a trip and has an accident which results in amnesia. She meets a doctor and they both fall for each other. Typical woman in a relationship which she is not happy, meets new man, has to make decision. Maybe if the book was bit longer and gave more insight into the characters, it would have been a more enjoyable read. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review.
This was a big no for me. Thomas takes an interesting idea and turns it to implausible. Frankly, I don't think anyone wants this to happen to them. AND, no one becomes a urologist for these reasons. Sorry.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
Dr. Cynthia Lamley is newly engaged to her police officer fiance, Terrell, and they are planning to go on a new year's cruise in Hawaii. However, when Cynthia ends up with amnesia from a car crash caused by a shoot out, she can't get her handsome doctor off her mind.
This story felt like the set up to a porn movie. Cynthia became a urologist because men's penises just turn her on so much. Granted, if it were an actual porn movie, there would have been a lot more sex, but the story was just so unrealistic. This novella wasn't for me.
I liked this book, but I wish it would have been a little longer so that things developed more fully. That is just my opinion though. I thought the Cynthia was a strong women that found herself in a situation that could end up changing her life for ever. What would you do when you have a chance to forget everything and become someone else entirely? This had some interesting twists that I enjoyed. Thank you for allowing me to read this and write about it.
