I have been researching different diets to reduce inflammation and reduce fibromyalgia pain. I have cut out red meat, most carbs, and dairy. I was interested in this book to get more recipes and continue my research on eating mainly vegetables.
I was very pleased with the recipients in this book and I enjoyed the section on vitamins. I plan to read her “The Vegiterranean diet” book next.
I received this galley from NetGalley.
This book is hands down the BEST guide to plant-based nutrition! It is extremely lengthy, but well written and incredibly informative. I follow a plant-based lifestyle and am familiar with a lot of the topics that were discussed but it was nice to be able to read about them more in-depth. I was very impressed by the Pregnancy and Beyond section as that's something not discussed much in the plant-based world, but yet so important. There is also a large section on Athletes which I found helpful for my husband.
Oh and of course, this book includes lots of delicious recipes from Julieanna! I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at a Food Is Medicine conference last year and she was spectacular! Julieanna is incredibly friendly and energetic--her passion for plant-based eating shines through her personality and everything she does. The only thing that could make this book better would be photographs of the recipes, as my husband usually judges what we cook based on what the final dish looks like.
*Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley. However, all opinions are my own.*
This is much more than just a cookbook; it explains everything that a beginner needs to know about a plant-based diet, as well as having great recipes. I learned a lot, although photos of the food would have been nice, too.
As a vegetarian I constantly have people tell me I can't get enough protein w/milk and dairy (which is a total scam perpetrated by the meat & dairy industry & a topic for a different day) or telling me that to do that they would have to live off of pasta and sandwiches. I'm always on the lookout for comprehensive guides that I can refer people to read to get all those myths out of their head.
This works really well as an education tool. It's an easy to read and well layed out book. The author goes into detail about nutrition and vitamins and what you get from plant based diets. She breaks things down in a very easy to understand manner. The book also includes recipes and ideas to get one started on stocking up their kitchen in preparation to switch their diet to plants. (I found that the hardest thing to do personally. Prep and organization is a must for getting off of meat, dairy and processed foods).
If you're looking to get some solid information about a plant based diet this is a very good place to start.

The PDF I was sent did not allow for me to view its contents. I don’t want to give a low review due to this however, it saddened me that I could not view anything.
Great book! Plant Based Nutrition has in-depth instruction regarding different nutrients. I also provides recipes and sample menu plans. There is a section on dieting with plant nutrition, as well as "dodging disease" with the plant based diet. I will most definitely try these recipes, and delve deeper as to what this book has to offer.
Fantastic Read. Very informative. I found this book to be very helpful with preparing meat-less meals. I feel like this book can be helpful for everyone and no previous knowledge or experience is needed in preparing the recipes or following this book.
I didn't quite finish this book. It was a little bit too much information. I enjoy learning about health and nutrition, but I just couldn't quite get into this one.
This is a really good introductory guide about plant-based diet. The author did a great job in explaining everything about the meatless diet. Well organized, clear, concise, and interesting. One of the things I love about the book is that I don't have to read the entire book to understand what a plant-based diet is all about. I only need to flip to the pages on information that I am interested in, questions that I might have, or the lifestyle/needs that best fit my situation. The recipes included at the back sound delicious and simple enough to make.
I have read most of the information in the book from different medias in the past (i.e. blogs, books, websites and etc.) This book basically has compiled everything I have read elsewhere and put the information together in one book. To simply put, This is THE BOOK for health-conscious newbies and beyond.
Highly recommended.
As much as I wanted to read this galley it was a no go as a download to was not possible as I tried all possible scenarios
1. Kindle format not available.
2. File could not be opened when downloaded
3. Protected file
Being that the publisher makes it such difficult task I would NOT recommend this book
I think this book is best for someone who is new to the whole plant-based lifestyle. It will be very informative for them!!
i think learning about what you are putting into your body is a wonderful life long lesson.
First of all, I want to say that this is not just a cookbook, so if you're looking for a huge quantity of recipes, this is not necessarily the book for that. It does have recipes, but the recipe section is at the end and it's not huge compared to other vegan/vegetarian cookbooks. However, I did like the recipes. I didn't think a lot of them were particularly mindblowing, and as a vegetarian/almost-vegan for 6 years, I've cooked dishes similar to a lot of them before. They're all fairly simple. However, I think that's also the strength of the recipes included. They're not too intimidating, don't require a huge amount of more "specialty" ingredients, and are easy enough to be good daily staples. I highlighted a few that look like they could be good bets for go-to recipes or work lunches, and some of them are things I could make with what I already have in my pantry, which is great.
The majority of this book, however, is information about plant-based eating. A *huge* wealth of information. I'm going to be honest, I skimmed a lot of this part because I'm already eating almost entirely plant-based and I don't need to be convinced (and I don't have the greatest attention span for non-fiction). However, from what I did see, it is a great reference for anyone who eats a plant-based diet or is considering changing their diet to be more plant-based. In addition to information about the specific health benefits of a plant-based diet, I think the most useful part is the breakdown of some of the more common ingredients that are good to have if you're eating a plant based diet (plant milks, meat substitutes, common spice blends, etc). I think this is useful because a big misconception about vegan food is that it's boring or bland, but that's absolutely not the case, and I think this book makes a strong case for both the health benefits and the variety of flavors that are possible in a vegan diet.
On the whole, I'd say this is a very useful book, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wanted some simple vegan recipes to get started, or anyone who is interested in nutrition and wants to get a more in-depth understanding of a plant-based diet.
Interested in a plant based diet but don't understand what nutrients you need and where to get them from? Tired of people asking "but what about protein?". That is what you will find in this book, all of the answers to the most common questions.
While this is not a recipe book, there are some staple recipes included throughout such as hummus, guac, and a cheesy veg dip.
If you're looking to understand plant based diets, this is the book for you. If you already understand it, this may still be a useful reference tool. If you don't really care about the specifics of a diet and just want the recipes? Try another book (but seriously, you probably should know at least the basics found in this book).
A good in depth guide of plant based nutrition. There is all the science and higher level information needed about fats, vitamins, protein, etc. The book is clearly organized and has helpful hints, tips, and summaries to help with the information digestion. This is a good companion to a book that sells you on converting to a plant based diet like How Not to Die.
This is a really excellent starter guide for those looking to begin a plant based diet. It provides easy to understand science and also has great sections on specific types of people (kids, athletes, seniors, etc...). Very light on recipes but the ones that are included are easy and simple.
When I was told I had to go on an anti-inflammatory diet for health reasons, I honestly didn't know where to start. There are so many different guides out there, but the biggest confusion for me was in regards to plant based proteins as well as battling 36 years of having it drilled into my head to avoid "carbs" while the doctors and nurses were telling me I suddenly had to start eating 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and 40 grams of dietary fiber. That...sort of goes against what had been instilled in me. This idiot's guide to understanding PLANT-BASED NUTRITION was incredibly helpful. It not only had in-depth information, but also had a breakdown at the end of each chapter called "the least you need to know", which was helpful when meaningfully helpful friends tried to offer advice that went against what my body actually requires. Little tidbits that I could use to educate them. There is even an entire section on avoiding "carbophobia". Additional benefits to this book is that there is a chapter on various exercises that are appropriate depending on what plants you're eating the most of to help with weight loss or help with muscle gain, as well as including 50 plant-based recipes that all sound mouthwatering.
This book has it all - for those who want to try plant-based food, and for those who are already eating and enjoying it! You will find vegan recipes for many different types of conditions, such as: pregnancy and early childhood, to heart disease, IBS, and kidney disease. You will learn why your body needs a plant-based diet, and how it can thrive on it, you will even live longer on a vegan diet!
You will be able to buy the necessary appliances, keep your pantry stocked, and learn how to produce plant - based milks, meats, and even cheeses!
There are recipes for pasta, pancakes, wild rice, hummus, dips, and even brownies!
The recipes not only list the ingredients, but also the nutritional information and the prep time, so that you can know what you are eating and how long it will take!
Enjoy discovering the plant-based life with this book!
Who's with me in throwing a frozen pizza in the oven for dinner filled with your favorite toppings for a quick and easy dinner. Yeah, me too. But not so quick you may just change your mind after reading this book. The content in the book is presented in a manner that is easy to understand and will not go over your head. Perfect for anyone not familiar with this nutritional lifestyle or someone such as myself that is familiar with it and needed a boost to get back on track nutritionally wise. Fabulous nutritional information telling you how and why to make your meals plant based from a nutritional and health point of view. Yummy recipes included. This book will benefit everyone.
