These are some of the most attainable, well explained and diverse vegan recipes, I’ve ever encountered. This cookbook is a must for me – especially the breakfast section, I loved it!
"Plant-Based Nutrition" provides the basic information needed to understand the benefits of eating a whole-food, plant-based diet and how to do it. The authors kept the information pretty basic--what you need to know to eat healthy in a practical sense rather than lots of scientific discussions. The authors talked about why a whole-food, plant-based diet is desirable, the nutrition you need (protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals) and how it's generally easy to meet the minimum requirements from whole, plant foods. They talked about what supplements you might need to take and which do more harm than good.
They talked about dietary guidelines, nutrition myths and controversies (obviously just the most common ones), understanding nutrition claims on products at the store and how to shop successfully. They described the benefits of exercise and some basics about length and types of exercise. They talked about special nutrition considerations during pregnancy and for babies, children, seniors, athletes, and weight loss. They covered how a whole food, plant-based diet helps heal chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, and more.
They provided tips for eating out at restaurants, for the holidays and such, and information on how to convert recipes to animal-product-free versions (with dairy, egg, meat, oil substitutes). Then we got 45 recipes from various people. In general, they seemed to serve about 4 people and didn't look too complicated. Overall, this book is a good resource if you want basic information about a whole-food, plant-based diet.
I'm sorry, I have to return this galley unread as I could not download it to any of my usual reading programs - Adobe PDF reader , Bluefire, Kindle. :-(
I would like to thank NetGalley and DK for providing me with an advance copy of this book for preview. All opinions stated are my own.
I had considered delving deeper into the nutritional aspects of a plant-based diet for some time, but as with so many good intentions, it had not got any further than the thought. So when Plant-Based Nutrition came along, it seemed like a sign. This book is everything I had hoped for and a whole lot more. So much more, in fact, that I very strongly recommend using the Look inside this Book feature to get a far better overview of all that is contained therein than I can give in a review.
To be honest, had I on.ly been given Penn Jilette's foreword to make a decision for or against this book, I would have passed. Based on personal preference, I find his way of writing more annoying than intriguing, but this is merely a side note and not a judgment on the value of the content that follows.
As with all Idiot's guides, the introduction serves to familiarize the reader with how the book is organized, which is helpful if you've never thumbed through one from the series before.
There are four parts to the book which explain in detail what nutrients a body needs, where they can be found, whether or not plant eaters need to worry about getting enough, and how the body metabolizes them. There are tips on special occasion dining, how to read nutritional labels, why it's important to exercise, and when to take supplements. One part is entirely dedicated to special situations, such as pregnancy, raising plant-based kids, senior nutrition, and similar subjects. All this information is presented in easy-to-read and understand form so you don't need a college degree to benefit from it. Part Four rounds out the book by presenting 45 plant-based recipes, all uncomplicated and prepared with ingredients that aren't exotic or difficult to find.
The three appendices consist of a glossary, sample meal plans, and nutrition charts. For those who wish to go deeper into certain topics mentioned, there are books and websites for further reading.
This nutritional guide is jam-packed with great information and particularly useful for those who are unsure whether a plant-based diet is for them (hint: it is) or how to get started, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about nutrition in general. Highly recommended!
When you think about a Idiot’s Guide to plant nutrition, most of us probably think about recipes. However, this book was written from an instructional point of view, to teach us what foods can do to reverse negative issues in our body and to become healthier overall.
It is truly a one stop guide to everything you need to know about the choices and the process for eating a plant based diet. Along with the nutritional needs your body requires, the authors lay out everything in a quick, easy to read format.
We need to understand that we can survive without dairy and meats so the authors take us through the nutritional necessities that our bodies require and how to find those nutrients in the food choices we make. They walk us through exactly what to eat and what not to eat and why. They have recreated the Food Pyramid for their own Food Triangle and it makes sense!
My favorite part is the shopping lists and pantry must-have’s. This makes the process simpler and easier to institute. Sometimes I have spent hours wandering through a store wondering if this item is okay to eat. Can I have this product or not. It is frustrating and makes an eating change difficult to stick with. I love the chapter about losing weight with plant based eating. It is very informative too!
This guide is packed full of tips and information you need to make the right decisions and food choices. They also address eating out, eating with others, and even fitness tips for plant eating people.
Another favorite is their chapter on Seniors deciding to switch to plant based nutrition. It is smart and full of reasons we should all embrace a healthy change. They also have chapters for teens and children too!
Honestly, they have thought of everything and yes, there are some recipes too!
Whether you want to make the change due to health reasons, or because you want to lose weight, this book is a fabulous tool for a smart food change that will change your mind about eating plant based, focus, and your life.
This book is a very impressive compilation of nutrition and diet. Some of it went over my head but I did enjoy reading about the health benefits of a plant-based diet.
Fantastically in depth look at plant based nutrition. Has everything you need to become or continue being a plant based eater.
I was looking for a book that explains everything I need to know about food and nutrition. This is the book I will reference over and over again. Understanding macronutrients and macrominerals is made easy as well as understanding so much about plant based nutrition.
A comprehensive book about plant-based diets. Includes information Contains useful information on the vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy diet. Recipes included as well and they look delicious.
I've been a vegetarian for years, and this book really helped with the day to day of things.
DK has published a very scientific view of following a plant-based diet, and outlines all of the benefits and nutritional information associated. Though the book was very thorough and full of facts, the eARC was lacking in the magnificent photographs and other illustrations for which DK is famous.
I liked the chapter ‘Controversies Clarified,’ which explained commonly held beliefs about excluding animal products from your diet, and the ‘Finding Hidden Ingredients’ section, which helps identify what does and does not contain animal products.
Also includes chapters on supplements, fitness, plant-based pregnancy, raising children, feeding seniors nutritionally, meat replacements and a few recipes.
A great, factual, unemotional reference for following a plant based diet.
