An urban fantasy that's a lot of fun
I feel so stupid that I did not immediately read this the day that I got it from Netgalley. When I did pick it up, I loved it so much. The lovable characters, the entertaining dialogue, the wild action scenes, and spellcasting all kept me enthralled in this urban fantasy. FYI, you must read this series in order. This “Book 2” picks up just where “Book 1” left off, in a continuous story. It does not contain a refresher of what happened in Part 1.
Most of the characters are about 20 years old, so the story has a youthful, sort of New Adult feel to it. There is cussing and some bloody violence (like decapitating a gun-wielding assassin to save a friend). However, sexual content is basically non-existent; relationships are handled in the sweet way of the Young Adult genre. This combination of things somehow works really well together, especially since Bitsy had some unusual teen years that precluded dating.
The series is set in our world, except that paranormal people (such as fairies and angels) are real, and the general human population is not aware of their existence. Bitsy and her friends are members of an alternative rock band on the cusp of big success. They are traveling around the Southwest U.S. on a concert tour. Bitsy’s bandmates are not human: a half-siren, a friendly succubus, and a fairy. Bitsy is probably not human either. She never knew her parents and was abandoned in the garden of a weird commune of shapeshifting dragons who raised her. Bitsy looks human but she can wield magic, is talented with a sword, and has a pesky problem of being magically compelled to help anyone who asks for help. At the start of Part 1, an irritating angel appeared and compelled Bitsy to investigate and prevent a magical war in Tempe, Arizona.
It is all told from Bitsy's first-person perspective, and I love Bitsy’s personality. I highly recommend this urban fantasy series, but you need to read them in order. I received a free advanced reading copy via Netgalley, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
I'm sad that I wasn't able to read this book, because it was too much at the same time. I guess that his book was amazing and I would love to try and read it.
Now i will have to buy one!
