“Now you see,” the horseman said, smiling brightly, “death is a gift, and I am a charitable man.”
This dystopian novella takes place in a wasteland that used to be the area around New York City. NYC is now almost totally underwater, with just some of the skyscrapers jutting out, providing homes for those desperate enough to live there.
The story is told from a couple of different points of view - John, an electrical lineman who is almost 40 years old and will be "celebrating" his End Day, and Edray who lives in Shantytown and dives illegally in NYC with his friend Mario.
There were lots of interesting ideas in this story, including End Day and all its ramifications, the totalitarian government led by Commander Martin, piggybacking using visors and much more.
This is not a sunny look at the future. It is depressing as Hell. But it is written well and made me think. I would have rated it 5 stars but the ending is nebulous and too abrupt for me.
I received this novella from Post Mortem Press through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
