"No Time To Blink" by Dina Silver was a beautifully written story that was interesting, heartfelt & addictive.
I'd love to read another book by this author.
Wow! "No Time To Blink" by Dina Silver is an amazing page turner! Great story in two timelines, mother and daughter's, both gripping and surprising. Full of mother's love, difficult marriages, infidelities and the ultimate family bonds. Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for the review copy. All opinions are my own.
Catherine Clarke defied all of her family's expectations for her when she married Gabriel, a handsome Lebanese businessman. She knew she would have to acclimate to a strange, new world when she moved to Gabriel's homeland and welcomed a baby daughter. But, Catherine had no idea just how volatile and threatening both her husband and her new surroundings would become. When Gabriel forbids her to return to the United States, Catherine devises a plan to deceive him and return home. She vastly underestimates the lengths he will go to punish her. After her daughter, Ann Marie, is abducted and taken deep into the mountains of Beirut, she's protected by family, culture and law, all of which are intent on keeping Catherine away from her. The only thing Catherine has on her side is the fierceness of a mother's love. She will move heaven, earth, and everything in between to find her child.
As a mother, this concept is utterly terrifying. It definitely reminds me of the movie "Not Without My Daughter". This is a fast paced, intense story with incredible storytelling. It alternates between that of a daughter whose past is a mystery even to her and that of a mother who has painful secrets to share. Silver manages to tell a heart wrenching, action packed story and captured my attention from the very first paragraph. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of her writing.
I did not like this book that much. The story felt a bit unbelievable to me and the characters were way too blah.
As a mom, I am always fascinated with stories, true or fiction, that depict the love of a parent and how far they will go to protect their children. I find them inspiring because you truly never know when you may be faced with a situation that requires you to fight for the life of your most precious loved ones. Catherine Clarke did just that. My heart ached for her throughout this book. I found it very unique to see her story, while at the same time seeing her daughter Ann Marie in the present time. The story felt so real at times I thought I may have been reading a memoir. I applaud Dina Silver for creating such intricate characters and developing this beautiful novel. I will be on the lookout for other books by her very soon!

I loved this book! It's a quick, fast-paced story of a mother's love and determination to get her daughter back after she was abducted by her father. The chapters go back and forth between the past and the present, where the daughter faces some difficult challenges in her own life. The beginning was a little slow, but it soon pulled me in, and I couldn't stop reading.
This story is told from two POV's, Catherine, the mother, and Ann Marie, the daughter. The chapters alternate between the past 1970’s and the present late 2000’s and at times I would need to go back to make sure who I was reading and what time it was, but the story was beautiful and I absolutely enjoyed it. It was emotional at times and it did grip me by the heart. I have always enjoyed the stories that Dina gives me and this was another one that was well written.
I'd like to thank Netgalley for a review ebook copy of this book. This was a love story about two people who fall in love and jump in with both feet, but find out that their different backgrounds are just too difficult for them to live happily together. The sad part is that their baby daughter pays the price. I liked the parts that took place in Lebanon, I thought they were interesting and that their beliefs and practices were intriguing. I really read this book fast, at times it was hard to put down.
I always love a book that is told over two time periods. This one is great. Emotional for sure. Keep Kleenex handy. It’s great all the way through. I highly recommend this book. Thank you for the honor of reading this one.
Catherine Clarke is the right girl from the right family. Raised in a wealthy town in Connecticut, she is expected to marry the male version of herself. But Catherine defies all the rules when she falls head over heels in love with Gabriel. Gabe is a charming, handsome, Lebanese businessman that Catherine cannot resist. When they quickly marry and Catherine gets pregnant, their love story pushes all boundaries. With little choice in the matter, Catherine is slowly controlled and coerced to move to Gabe’s homeland. He is her husband and she naively dreams of a happy marriage as long as they are lovingly together. Once abroad Gabe dramatically reverts to his more conservative upbringing in a culture where the wife has no say even on the smallest decisions. As Catherine tolerates their dwindling relationship Gabe becomes more threatening and Catherine devises a plan to return to the U.S. The protection of the law is not on her side and even her phone calls are being tracked. Alone and afraid, Catherine does whatever it takes to keep her daughter safe. Told by alternating characters, Catherine’s story and Ann Marie’s future self learn about love, family and secrets the hard way. Well developed characters and fast paced suspense make No Time to Blink by author Dina Silver a must read. Could not put down this glimpse into another land where even the simplest gift in life has a price we cannot afford to pay.
While I don't usually go for novels that alternate time periods, I found that Silver executed the journal enteries in a way that made it seamless with the overall story being told.
I found the relationship between mother and daughter to be quite engaging and realistic. It was bittersweet at times and I found the protective nature both demonstrate refreshing in a sense.
This is a beautiful book, at times tender, loving and gentle, at others heartbreaking, frightening and painful. Yet throughout the book, told from alternating viewpoints of a mother and daughter decades apart, throughout the book the story is moving, filled with the all encompassing love between a mother and daughter. Highly recommend!
I was struck by how well this story depicts the unbreakable and life-long bond between mother and daughter! I could feel Catherine’s heartbreak when her baby daughter was taken from her, and her determination and resolve to get her back. I could feel the love, concern and compassion between Catherine and Ann Marie when Ann Marie is an adult. And then there’s the sweet, loyal Snoopy – I loved him and he made the story even better! I needed several tissues when I reached the ending, but the tears were well worth the wonderful experience of reading this story!
5* Emotional Stars
The story is told in two voices, Catherine the mother and Ann Marie the daughter. The chapters alternate between the past 1970’s and the present late 2000’s. These two ladies were very strong willed women who had to overcome hardships in their lives that in a way paralleled each other. The tight bond between mother and daughter was felt in every chapter.
This was a very emotional story and will tug at the heart of any mother who has children.
This well written story was fast paced and flowed well and was very powerful and realistic in every sense of the story.
If you are in the mood for a story about families, love, heartache and forgiveness then I highly recommend this book, as I loved every page read.
Thanks to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me to read this wonderful book for an honest opinion.
This book was very moving and required a tissue to be close at hand. The main characters are well written and the story is told from the mother Catherine’s perspective as well as the daughters, Ann Marie. It truly is a powerful story of the lengths a mother will go through to not only protect her child but have her within arm’s reach. This has been one of my favorite books I’ve read in a while.
Read a copy of the book through Net Gallery.
The book is divided between two time lines,a mother and a daughter, and both following a break down of their marriages and trying to cope as best they can.A heartwarming story that readers can relate too.
I could not put this book down,a real page twister although in some parts it reminded me of 'not sithout my daughter'.
The two main characters, a mother and daughter, shared unhappy marriages resulting in divorces and the struggles of hanging on to their children. Early in the 1970s, Catherine married a man from Lebanon and went to his country while pregnant with their child Ann Marie. Ann Marie marries a man and is the mother of three young children. Author Dina Silver weaves the stories of two strong women faced with uphill battles facing survival of unfortunate marriages. The novel is fast paced and wills the reader to keep reading.
This is a fantastic story. I think the blurb gives away too much of the story for my liking, as a lot of it happens later in the book and I would personally shelve this into the ‘women’s fiction’ category. A gripping read from beginning to end.
This book starts out with the main character Catherine denying a marriage that was years in the making. Much to her parents and family's disapproval she becomes romantically involved with a Lebonises man who she believes is the love of her life. Things are good for a little while until they aren't. It isn't long before
Catherine realizes that her husband is cheating on her but she tries to ignore it and when things go back to the way they were Catherine really thinks she might be back on track with her relationship. Then out
of the blue when her career is just flourishing her husband drops a bomb on her. In two weeks he plans to move back to his home town of Beirut, Lebanon and she is coming with him. Once they get to Beirut
Catherine starts to take in the places and really gets to know her husband's family and his culture. However after their daughter is born her husband changes for the worst, he starts controlling her and becoming threatening and violent. This is a major change of character for him and Catherine doesn't know how to take it. When he forbids her from returning to the states and locks her passport away is when things really sink in. However when her daughter is kidnapped that is when she really finds out what she is made out of. The book switches between Catherine telling the story of what happened, and her divorce proceedings. At first it was a little difficult to tell exactly what was happening and when but once I got the hang of it it was really good, and looking back the author did make it very clear what was in the past I just didn't notice it right away.
I enjoyed the main character. She was the best part I could feel her frustration as well as her terror at the unknown. This kind of reminded me of "Not Without My Daughter" by Betty Mahmoody. While lots of it was
very different the visitation turning into a life time stay really reminded me of that book. Good story the only thing I didn't like was the time changes. I think that there might have been a better way to show this to the reader. My favourite thing about this book besides the story of course had to be the characters now I know that it is a work of fiction but it is told with such realism that it is almost like reading someones memoir. I loved it and this needs to be on everyone's to read list as of right now.
This book got me pulled in from the first paragraph to the very last one. It's a story of will and determination first of a mother, CC, who is taken to Lebanon by a husband, Gabriel, who is a different person after they get to his native country. He was controlling, secretive, and he took her passport so she couldn't leave with their baby daughter. The storyline goes between CC and her now grown daughter, Ann Marie, who is going through a bad marriage and divorce herself. This is a story of love between a mother and daughter to bring understanding and completeness to both their lives. I really recommend this book. Thank you Netgalley for a chance to read this book and to give my honest review.
