Great concept that just doesn't take off for me. Bland. Choppy. Not nearly enough world building that my attention simply wasn't captured. I dont like the racial/gender vague stereotyping of some of the 'bad guys' that makes it feel lazy and feeds to something not necessary in any novel as out of context as this was.

Sorry to say, this was not a fave at all.

With a nuclear winter and rising Atlantic powers, this dystopian novel centers on the island of Manhattan, ringed by a seawall. Detective Jon Phillips is recruited to try to stop a violent serial killer menacing the city. Finding himself on the run, Jon does not know who to trust.

Empecé a leer Dayfall un poco intrigada por la sinopsis, en la que se hablaba de una investigación criminal en un entorno urbano afectado por una noche perpetua. Como es obvio desde el título, este es un homenaje invertido a Nightfall de Asimov, pero pasado por un filtro noir. El propio autor se reconoce admirador de Raymond Chandler e intenta imitar su estilo en la obra, aunque me temo que no lo consigue.

La obra utiliza los recursos típicos de la novela negra, más que de la ciencia ficción. Quizá este sea el punto inicial por el que no me acabó de convencer desde un principio, ya que esperaba otra cosa. Pero lo cierto es que aún tratándola como una novela de investigación sin más, tanto los personajes como el desarrollo están faltos de vida. Que se utilice sangre fresca para llevar a cabo una investigación porque se sospecha de la corrupción de la propia policía no es algo novedoso. Pero es que encima se juega contra el reloj, en una cuenta atrás supuestamente frenética, y digo supuestamente porque difícilmente podría importarme menos que el sol salga o no.

Los personajes que van de duros por la vida también me cansan. La motivación del protagonista es consagrarse en la policía para dar el salto a la investigación privada me parece válida, pero las "intuiciones" que realiza a lo largo de la historia son tan inevitables como la muerte y los impuestos. Desde un principio el guión está establecido y no hace falta ser muy despierto para saber cómo va a terminar. El autor ha intentado mezclar dos géneros que normalmente maridan bien, pero el resultado final deja mucho que desear.

Y me parece una pena, por que pienso que el escenario, la ciudad de Nueva York, la que nunca duerme, sumergida en una noche eterna podría dar muchísimo juego. Los cambios geográficos debidos a la subida del nivel del mar también varían el paisaje urbano que estamos acostumbrados a imaginar. El problema es que la historia y los personajes, no acompañan para nada.

Dayfall was inspired by Issac Asimov's classic short story "NIghtfall," but that's the best you can say of it. The premise, that New York and a number of cities on the North Atlantic coat have been shrouded in cloud driven darkness for years, but are about to come out and see the sun, doesn't have the credibility of the short story, nor the strength of Asimov' prose.

The concept behind Dayfall is poorly explained. Why is there perpetual night only on the coastlines? This is an obvious rip off of Asimov's Nightfall. While Asimov gives a plausible explanation for perpetual daylight this author does not for night.

This one was just okay. It didn't really capture my attention, and there was weird Islamophobia and transphobia from some of the characters that I didn't care for. They were the bad characters so I'm assuming that it was it make them out as bad guys, but I think relying on that kind of characterization is just lazy and can be harmful.

DNF - I just couldn't get past the first chapter. Too boring and bland.

I found this novel extremely hard to read. The language used made the book feel stiff and stuffy.
I believe hard-baked crime-fiction fans will love this novel, it just wasn't my style.
