Another fantastic read in this amazing series! Still so many questions with just breadcrumbs to figure them out, but I love it and i can't wait for the next book!
I honestly don't think there is anything better than a well developed, detailed, connected series of books. Donna Grant takes this to a whole new level. I have loved all of the Dark Kings books and the Reapers books are no exception. They move their own story-arc forward while being driven by the main characters. This book is Daire's story - and it was wonderfully written. We didn't see a lot of Daire in the previous books because he was off on his own assignment - but if you have read the Dark Kings books you would know exactyly what he has been up to. His background story was fascinatingly different from the others.
I felt a strong connection to both him and Ettie - who I appreciated deeply as a badass heroine!
I am desperate to read the next one already...
Dark Alpha's Night is book five in the Reapers series from Donna Grant.
This was Daire's book. The story opens with Daire done watching Rhi and back with his fellow Reapers. A surprise discovery leads Daire to Ettie, of course another hafling, who has some interesting secrets of her own. The problem is that Bran the evil Reaper and his band of Dark Fae always seem to be one step ahead of the game. This book had a very exciting and romantic plot. I've been eager for Daire's book anyway and he lived up to my every expectation. The beauty of this author's storytelling is the mystery. As usual, with any Donna Grant book, this one had many complex twists that have me intrigued and waiting for the next book so I can find out what's going on with all the other great characters. Like exactly what is happening with Death and will she ever get together with Cael ? Does she have a connection to Rhi or what ? Lastly, just what evil tricks will Bran pull next ?
I'm not quite sure this was a stand alone novel, because of the myriad intricasies of the story, but it's definitely a super fantastic book that any paranormal / fantasy reader will enjoy. Donna Grant is an excellent storyteller and certainly one of my very favorite authors. I have been following her Dark World books since the very beginning and have been ecstatically happy with each of her spinoff series. I love her rich imaginative writing, the magical worlds she creates and most of all the vibrant characters.
I loved this book from page one until the end. I cannot wait to find out what's up next !
I have been reading Donna Grant's Dark World series from the beginning, starting with the Dark Warriors, followed by the ongoing Dark Kings series which overlays the current Reaper series. She has created a world and characters that jump off the page with originality and creativity.
Daire is one of the few Reapers who appears frequently in the Dark Kings novels, so there's been ample opportunity to get to know him. There have been previous hints of a possible love interest for Daire, so I was somewhat surprised to find out that Daire's HEA is with a totally different character, Ettie.
Sparks fly from the minute Daire and Ettie meet. However, this novella is much more than a simple romance. It provides a lot of additional information about Bran's plans to overthrow Erith and achieve world domination. Bran sees Ettie as a means to that end. But he doesn't count on the Reapers continued efforts to thwart his plans.
Dark Alpha's Night is not really a stand-alone novella since it builds on events that have occurred in the previous Reaper stories. Background information is provided at the beginning, but I think Dark Alpha's Night is best appreciated in the context of the entire ongoing series.
I received an ARC of Dark Alpha's Night from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
More. I want more. That is how I feel after every Donna Grant book whether Dark Warriors, Dragon Kings or her Reapers Series. There is so much going on and more is learned in each exciting new book. And, Dark Alpha’s Night, Book 5 in Grant’s Reapers Series, delivers. We meet a family of three sisters, Ettie and her younger siblings Jamie and Carrie, who have been training their entire lives to be ready for the Fae, which up to now they have never seen. That’s all about to change when Bran, who wants to kill the Reapers and Death, for some reason wants the land that has been in Ettie’s family for generations. With the Reapers’ help, one in particular, (I don’t want to spoil it for anyone) Ettie defends her land against Bran and his army. Bran continues to get stronger as Death gets weaker. We get a glimpse into why. But what can the Reapers do to stop it? And where is Death? Will Eoghan find his way out of wherever he has disappeared to? I love the continuing story of these Reapers! Keep ‘em coming! #DarkAlpha'sNight #NetGalley
Dark Alpha's Night (Reaper, #5) by Donna Grant ...Daire and Ettie's story... Daire is now back with the Reapers and no longer shadowing Rhi...Ettie and her sisters Carrie and Jamie know they are half fae but not really what that means..they live together in their family home...Bran tries to sweet talk Ettie but Daire comes to her aid...I was lucky to get to preview this book through #NetGalley. What is going on with Erith...Seamus...is Eoghan's story next? Daire and Ettie get to their HEA but there is still a lot to come....
Review goes live on the blog on Feb 23 and will show up on Goodreads sometime later.
In a Flutter: Yummy
Fluttering Thoughts:
Worldbuilding: And I return again to the fab world of dark and light fae, reapers, Death, magic, plotting and scheming, hot romance, and the charming Ireland! Yey!
Characters: I already know Daire because of the Dragon Kings series. He was Rhi’s reaper watcher. I admit that I wondered for a while if maybe they wouldn’t end up together. Apparently not. Rhi’s love life is going to be the end of me, I swear! Ahem. So, Daire, lol. I liked him, in this story he had a bit of a mischievous flavor, and I found out more about him and how he became a reaper which ofc meant empathy galore. He’s also a badass and a man of action, plus hot and charismatic.
Ettie is the responsible big sister, watching over her sisters and taking care of things after their dad died. If that’s not super endearing, then I don’t know what could be. She’s pretty badass too, strong, and no-nonsense which I always like. I really enjoyed her incurably romantic side that she tried to keep to herself for a while there.
They had hot and instant chemistry, and even hotter one of one.
Plot: The romance is hot and pretty slow burn. The intrigue with Bran vs. Death develops nicely with each novel in the series, and I’m very engaged and curious about how things will go from here on. The story is active and has a nice alert tempo.
Writing: Third person, past tense narrative, mostly his/her POV.
Curb Appeal: Cool cover, hooking blurb, insta-buy author name for my fae PNR moods. Donna Grant delivers both hot and fun romance and a deeper story than boy-meets-girl.
I recommend Dark Alpha’s Night to fans of fae PNR with original concepts, hot romance, and intriguing series-wide arcs.
This is book 5 in the Reaper's books and I highly recommend that you read the previous books in this series so you understand everything that is happening and exactly what the story ARC has going on. These books are also loosely connected to the Dark Kings series but you don't have to read those books to read this series and understand what is going on. The characters just cross over and that series is excellent as well. This one is about the Reaper Daire who we have seen in the previous books as well in some of the Dark Kings books as he is the one who has been watching Rhi. He has been sent to find out about some halflings that they are looking for and meets Ettie. Ettie and her sisters know that they are part fae because their father told them but they aren't sure they truly believe that after never having seen a fae. Now they are suddenly thrown into Reaper issues that they had no clue about and aren't sure exactly how to deal with it. Add in Ettie and Daire's unusual attraction to each other and the other issues going on with Death that the Reapers know nothing about.
There was so much happening in this book that pushed the bigger story ARC along that you can't help but love this book! I was really looking forward to Daire's story and this book didn't disappoint a bit! Daire and Ettie together were not only hot but they seemed to truly connect and just understand each other. Ettie was not only loving towards her family but this woman was strong enough to stand up to Bran and not back down when she needed to! Add in all the other tidbits thrown in there that help to keep you guessing and I absolutely loved this book. After reading that epilogue though? I really hope Eoghan's story is next because I really feel like he needs a savior! Great read!
“Dark Alpha’s Night” (Reaper #5) by Donna Grant. Another page-turning chapter in this enthralling installment of the Reaper series. I have read all of Donna Grants prior to books. I do not recommend starting with this book as characters and the storylines are well established.
Wow what a great, albeit short read! I really enjoyed both Daire and Ettie’s characters and I think she will be a fantastic addition to the Reaper team. Its good to see some of the details now coming to light - Brans source of power, part of Deaths origins and a glimpse of what is assumed the next installment.
I am saddened to read Daire is unlikely to continue following Rhi as I quite enjoyed her little interactions with him and that Death has retreated to her tower.
I look forward to reading Ulricks and Eoghans up-coming stories in this formidable set of books.
I highly recommend going to Donna’s website and start reading in the suggested order as there is a tonne of history prior to this book and we are currently building towards an epic ending.
My thanks to NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for selecting me to have an ARC to voluntarily review.
I received a copy of Dark Alpha's Night by Donna Grant from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
First, I did not realize that this was a middle book of a series (the summary did say series, but I didn't see a book number so I assumed it was the first). When I realized that the characters were already established - back stories, relationships, etc. - I was leery to continue without having read the earlier novels.
Happily, I stuck with it and am happy to report that the book did not disappoint. It was a little confusing at first to not have characters or their stories explained, but it didn't take long to clear up and sort everyone out.
This was an easy, fun read and I would read other novels by this author.
From page one you get action to dive into. The passion and sexiness between the hero and heroine. Donna Grant doesn't disappoint in the next installment of the Reapers. Cover to cover action, steamy scenes, and danger.

Daire is a Reaper. Death chose seven fae, either light or dark and who have died, to give them a choice to live again as executioners of other fae as Death decrees. Once a Reaper, they cease being either light or dark, owing allegiance only to Death. Erith, or Death, is the former Goddess of War who now lives in her own peaceful realm with the duty of keeping a balance of power between the light and dark fae. Ages ago one Reaper, Bran, broke her rules and fell in love with a woman. Death punished him, but Bran escaped his prison-realm confinement and now hunts the Reapers and Death for vengeance. Ultimately he wants power, has built an army, and has found a way to drain Death’s magic for his own use. The Reapers' current and most important goal is to defeat him. They know Bran had children and now search through ancient documents to discover his descendants, ones who might have information on what weapon Bran searches to find.
In this series, Death has changed her rules and now allows the Reapers to have women partners. The Reapers, former dark fae Kyran and Fintan, and former light fae Talin, Baylon, Daire, and Neve, the only female Reaper, along with their leader Cael, search for a Reaper, Eoghan, who disappeared in a battle with Bran. Four of them now have mates: Kyran has River, Baylon has Jordyn, Fintan has Catrinona who wounded Bran--something no Reaper can do, and Reaper Talin has the newest Reaper Neve for his woman.

Ettie and her two younger sisters, Jamie, and Carrie, live on the land their family has owned for countless generations, knowing little of their family's heritage. Their father searched endlessly to prove fae existed, but to no avail, he found nothing. He has now passed, leaving Ettie to care for her sisters. She thinks them more beautiful and attractive than herself, so is surprised when sitting in a bar at a table separate from her sisters, a very handsome man sits down. He flirts with her but her sisters take an aversion to him. Only after leaving the bar does Ettie learn the man’s name, Bran.
This short novel (180 pages) is the first of this series I’ve read, so found the first chapter with all its information about the Reapers very helpful. Daire I knew as a character in the author Donna Grant's Dragon Kings Series, as he was the Reaper following the light fae, Rhi, a woman with whom it seems Death has a fascination. Daire intercedes between Bran and Ettie just in time, and Daire has an instant visceral attraction to the woman. He lets her know Bran has only evil intent towards her. Daire knows Bran wants something from Ettie, but what? And how far will Bran go to get what he wants? Daire vows to protect Ettie and her sisters, but he knows Bran’s power grows, and as a former Reaper, the present Reapers have little power against him.
Dark Alpha’s Night is a fast reading, intriguing, suspenseful, and enjoyable story.

I was graciously given an ARC copy of Dark Alpha's Night from NetGalley and St Martin's Press in exchange for my honest opinion. Dark Alpha's Night by Donna Grant is book five in the Reaper series. Dark Alpha's Night could be read as a stand-alone as all past information is summarized but I would not suggest it. These books take place in conjunction with the Dark Kings and have crossed over characters on occasion. The Reaper series is worth the experience and should be read in its entirety if possible.
The Reapers are Death's secret executioners of the Light and Dark Fae. Reaper Bran broke Death's rule of secrecy when he told his fae lover of their existence. Bran attacks and kills his fellow Reapers following his lover's execution for his transgression. Death imprisons Bran, but centuries later he escapes. The current Reaper faction is trying to thwart Bran's attempts to gain influence and steal Death's magic.
The latest Reaper installment reveals things on the continuing subplots, and I read in part for these insights. Rhi is again confirmed to have great significance in the wars going on. Death finds herself facing a choice that will affect not only her but her Reapers as well. I enjoy plots about a bigger world, and Donna Grant's Dark World is one of the best.
Daire has been on a side mission for Death for most of the Reaper series. I worried Daire would get too attached to the one he was sent to observe during this assignment. Thankfully this story alleviated the concern I had for Darie's affections, and I am pleased how things ended for him.
The seductive power of the Reapers, or any fae for that matter, is intense and Daire is no exception. Each romance in the Reaper books gets right to the point, partly I think due to their novella status. I typically have an issue with declarations of love expressed only days after the couple meets. These books don't bother me too much when this occurs. These characters have been alone for so long they should take the opportunity for love when it presents itself. And I am invested in their lives so wish it for them as much as I hope they can find what they need to defeat Bran.
I enjoy how Donna Grant writes her fae. The Reaper series continues to hold my attention and I suggest giving them a try. All opinions are my own and may not be identical to others. I urge all readers to come to their own conclusions.
It made me sad to see Daire's name first. But only because of the connection with him and Rhi. No longer needing to be at her side at all times is a blow. Though I love Daire and want him to have his happy ending. Because we all know Rhi will be with her Dragon King.
Daire is off to find a connection to Bran and when he arrives he sees Bran has already beaten him to the O'Byrne family. Particularly the oldest, Ettie.
Ettie is used to being overlooked. Her sisters are for more beautiful than she so when she gets the slightest attention she intends to enjoy it. Though having it come from Bran isn't what she truly wants.
Daire has a big mission to complete in getting Ettie and her sisters, Jamie and Carrie, to believe him and not join Bran. Though it was easier than he thought the big problem comes when trying to find out what Brand wants.
In finding out that part we also find out what he is doing to Erith. Death is dying and it makes me sad to see her push Carl even further away. She's pretty much giving up and that's unacceptable.
I loved the characters in this story. They were very enjoyable and I just love Daire. While this is a short story, you don't really know much about him. You need to read the Dragon King series to get his full effect! This was an awesome read but I hate having to wait for the next!
Loved Daire and Ettie. Loved Ettie's sisters too. I was kind of hoping the girls would stay at Inchmickery, ah well. I loved the short insights into where Eoghan is. I'm assuming his book will be next!! I love where the story is going and can't wait for the next installment.
3.5 Stars, I wasn't too sure what to expect going into an already established series, I found it was an ok read for me. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous books and even that the series connected to another and that to another and so on. I have no time to be able to go and read all her work. This was a good though, this is part of her Reaper/ Dragon King series, I did get confused at times but I found I plotted along. Ettie was pretty cool chick and I really liked Daire. The romance was fast and hot, I enjoyed it for what it was. I liked Donna's writing style.
Raises more questions than answers but still a great read.
I love Donna Grant's Dragon Kings books so this was a nice diversion with familiar characters. The lives of the Reapers are fascinating and it is interesting to see Death in her element. All around a fun way to explore the lives of Fae, Reapers, half-lings and humans. My only criticism is that there is a lot of narrative at the beginning of the book but then again you often get that with the first book in a new series. I plowed through and enjoyed the story of Daire and Ettie.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book provided by NetGalley and enjoyed it enough that I will come back for more with subsequent books in the series.
Dark alphas night is another book in the dragon king series, I've only read one previous book so did become a little confused at times, that said Dairewas a great hero, loyal to a fault and determined to prevent the dark fate from killing the halflings.
He meets Ettie and her sisters and he and Ettie start a steamy romance hindered a little by Daire's inability to express his deep feelings for Ettie.
A good enjoyable fantasy romp that will keep you entertained.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for opportunity to review this book.
Another installment in the Reaper/Dragon Kings series, this one add a little more info to the puzzle of how they can win the war they are fighting. The romance was a little to fast and predictable but you still will want to read it since there are more clues to the overall arc.
