I love the Withlands stories, and have been waiting for this book for quite a while. The preview excerpt format was a little wonky on my kindle, so it was a little difficult to follow, however, I anticipate it to be better once I have the completed version or physical copy in my hand.
So far the story is very intriguing and makes you really curious about what is going wrong with the sightwitches. Even though the format is unique, like the first two books the POV changes are still there via different documents that are included. Ryber's character has so much more depth already, and it's exciting to see where she came from.
I am really enjoying the continued world building that this book offers! I can't wait to get my hands on my own copy so I can finish it! A full review will be posted on my goodreads & blog as soon as I finish the full book.
Format wise, Sightwitch felt very rough. I'm hoping that, since this was an e-arc preview, that things will be fixed, but between font color changes and alternating capitals and lower case letters, my eyes started to hurt shortly after starting. It was jarring and did not make for a pleasant reading experience.
The sketches and the diagrams of the Sightwitch levels and the environments they encounter were nicely done. Artwork in books can be either hit or miss; in this case, the style was a nice compliment to the story.
Ryber and Tanzi's Threadsister bond was pretty clear from the memories the reader gets from the journal entries written by either. It was sad when Sightwitches started going missing and Ryber started to despair of seeing Tanzi again. The fear in her heart and the panic in her mind was very clear.
As this was set up as the journal of Ryber, I thought that I'd be able to find her voice clear and distinct. There are also entries from Tanzi, as well Dysi, a Sightwitch Sister from generations ago. Comparing these three points of view, I found almost no difference. If it were not for their entries titled with their names, I would not have been able to tell you which entry belonged to which girl. Another problem was, a lot of the entries were not labeled with a name. Sometimes it was only Dreams, sometimes Memories, and what with the intensely similar "voices", it sometimes took me a minute to flip back and figure out who was doing what.
I did not care for the story itself. Pacing was decent, but there was nothing that really clicked for me, nothing that made me want to find a complete copy.
I think fans of Truthwitch, and indeed those that have read the already published Truthwitch and Windwitch, might enjoy this as a supplementary novella more so than someone just coming to Susan Dennard's books. Even though this is #0.5 in the series and should be perfectly readable without having read #1 or #2, it didn't have that ease and I'd really recommend having the "previous" books under your belt before reading Sightwitch.
I can't wait to finish this book. I am so excited and his excerpt made even more! This world is so amazing and I find myself getting completely enveloped within it.
So good!! I'm even more desperate to read the third book asap when it comes out!
Sightwitch is the novella sets before the events of Truthwitch and it follows the story of Ryber and how she met Kullen. Since it's only an excerpt of 118 pages my rating may change after reading the other part, but so far I give it 2/5 stars. Basically, nothing exciting happens and it's pretty boring, too. We see Ryber as apprentice to become a Sightwitch, but it seems the Goddess has other plans for her. Honestly, I didn't care at all about her and to me this is only a filler until the release of Bloodwitch. So... yeah, this first part disappointed me very much.
ARC provided via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve just finished Sightwitch but seriously can’t see the point of this novella. Was it really necessary?
The Witchland series is great but i think this novella is not something that has left me longing for that universe. To me, it was it like that.
I really want to read more books by Susan Dennard but this book just got me confused because while we’re waiting for the third book we just got a taste of the same universe but it’s not something that will calm our hunger for the final book.
I received this as an ARC, so it might not be accurate for the final version, but I would recommend purchasing the physical copy to everybody because it wasn’t perfect.
However, sadly, i have to say that this wasn’t really something exceptional!
I am so excited for Sightwitch to come out so I can review the full thing. This excerpt was great though.
I find it a bit difficult to review Sightwitch, as I've only read the preview excerpt and the formatting on my iPad/Kindle App wasn't the best, but what I've read and seen so far, was absolutely amazing.
Even though I only picked up Truthwitch last week and haven't read the second book in the series, it was super easy to get into Sightwitch. It was really interesting to read from Ryber's perspective and it was especially fun to follow her story through the journal entries, notes, illustrations, etc.
The only thing I didn't like (besides the formatting of the DPF - which has nothing to do with the book!), is that it ended! I just really want more ASAP! Like I said, it was really easy getting into the book and that's why I definitely plan on getting a finished copy. I just can't wait to see how it ends! The only reason I'm rating it 4/5 is because I haven't read the full book yet.
I had the opportunity to read an excerpt from the upcoming novella Sightwitch by Susan Dennard. This novella is part of the Witchlands series and takes place before the events of Truthwitch.
I normally only read novellas as ebooks but would definitely recommend buying this one as a physical copy. I know I will ;)
There are a lot of illustrations in the book and personally I think that just works better on a page than on my small phone screen. The formatting was also a bit off which made it somewhat harder to read at certain points.
This novella is about Ryber, a character we met in Truthwitch but didn't really get to read about in Windwitch. I liked getting to know her better and enjoyed the way it was done. The novella consist mostly of journal entries, most of them are Ryber's but there are others as well. I really liked Tanzi's journal entries and thought they really showed you more of who Ryber is.
It was interesting to read about the Sight Sisters and I can't wait to learn more about Sightwitches. As I mentioned not all journal entries are by Ryber, some of them are by Tanzi, her Treadsister. But there are others as well and I'm super interested in seeing how they will play into the overall plot of the book. I'm expecting them to be of importance in the end!
All the Sight Sisters apart from Ryber have gone missing and she needs to find them. At the same time there are Nubrevnans setting up camp close by. We know Kullen was with them and we all want to know more about Ryber and Kullen right? The excerpt ended on quite the cliffhanger and I can't wait to continue reading this novella the moment it releases!
This was fantastic, I love the way the story is being told through journal entries and illustrations. I am so intrigued by the story and can’t wait to read the full book!
The Witchlands series is one of my favorite young adult series. I've always enjoyed Susan Dennard's work and the world she built. This book offered a different perspective on a world I'd become familiar with. Although I had a hard time getting into it, I started flipping through the pages by the time I reached the halfway point. This book took a look at the life of a character we have met and showed us her past. I loved Ryber when I first read Truthwitch and I enjoyed learning about her past even though I had a little trouble with the different formatting of this book. It was like reading a journal, which isn't usually the kind of book I read, but it still had a good storyline. It focuses on Ryber's life before she met Kullen and her time as a Sightwitch sister. I am eager to get my hands on the final book so I can fully enjoy the book. If you liked the truthwitch series, I would recommend picking this up.
I just know Susan Dennard has done it again. Tear my heart to pieces. I would give anything to get my hands on the full book right now!
Ryber is such a fun character to read about. I really relate to her rule following. I like that she's different than most characters you read about most days. She's calm, collected and follows the rules. I'm dying to know how her journey will change her. And I'm dying to know how she and Kullen fall in love!! I'm also very interested in The Rook and hope we get more of his story.
I am enjoying the way the book is told through journal entries and other clippings. It's very unique and adds a different element to the story telling. Can't wait to read more!!
I'm so excited about this book but I just could not get through the excerpt. The formatting is incredibly confusing. It alternates between POV and excerpts from a diary and from other texts, sometimes literally mid-word. Here is a quote I had to parse: "No one knows. 'You'll b e c a u s e o u r v i s i o n i s understand when s h r o u d e d w i t h o u t t h e Sight you're Summoned," is what Sister Hilga always tells me." (yes those extra spaces are from the text). The two texts are layered on top of each other and you have to pick it apart.
This is one of the harder examples but the entire thing is just impossible to read. I'm choosing to stop now and try again when the formatting has been fixed. I'm really excited about this book and would rather enjoy the first few chapters.
UPDATE: I made a second attempt at reading this. I installed Adobe Digital Editions on my laptop. The text formatting looks great on my laptop but none of the images show up. The images show up on my Kindle though. So it required two devices at a time to read it, but that did work.
My Review:
I liked this a lot. The book is told through diary entries, notes, etc which was a really cool way to add context to the story. The main character, Ryber, was great to read about and I enjoyed how her character was developing through the first half of the book. The flashback diary entries of Eridysi were really interesting. It was cool learning about the history of the Witchlands through those entries. The only character I haven't been able to get into so far is Tanzi. Ryber and Tanzi have such similar character voices that I often found myself reading Tanzi's less frequent chapters thinking I was reading about Ryber, and then having to go back and reread it as Tanzi, which just made her chapters less exciting to read.
I received a preview excerpt of Sightwitch from NetGalley. A full review will go up once I have the complete book! Sightwitch is the third installment in the Witchlands series, a novella giving us more insight into Ryber's backtory. You might know that I'm a huge fan of the Witchlands in general, but so far I'm thinking this one might be my favorite so far!
Ryber and Kullen are somewhat mysterious side characters in Truthwitch and Windwitch, although we know that they have an intensely bonded relationship. We especially don't know much about Ryber. Sightwitch begins with her childhood and is told through a series of journal entries and annotated documents. I love the format (can't wait to see what the finished version looks like!) and the story is both fascinating and unexpected. As it turns out, Ryber was raised in a convent run by the mysterious and largely forgotten Sightwitches. We get a story that is not only personal, but also rich in mythology and history previously unknown. I'm loving that we get more understanding of religion and the origins of magic in the Witchlands.
As a character, Ryber is also a bit of a surprise. We see a young Ryber who is fastidious about following the rules and desperate to be chosen by her goddess to ascend the ranks of Sightwitches. This is so different from who she seems to be in the other books that it's clear we're getting a major character development arc, hopefully seting us up for Bloodwitch. The sample chapters end right when she meets Kullen for the first time and I can't wait to see how their relationship develops! I'm very excited to get my pre-ordered copy now.
A big thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge for the advanced excerpt
I already owned Truthwitch and Windwitch, and was just about to start them when I saw that this prequel was about to come out! I AM HOOKED. I cannot wait to continue with the series once I can finish Sightwitch. The excerpt was amazing and I really enjoyed the suspense. The ARC preview, of course, ended with a cliffhanger, and I am definitely planning on purchasing this book on release day so I can find out what happens! The journal entry method of telling the story was so much fun and I just can’t wait to finish the book! So far: a 4/5 star read, but I will update that after Feb. 13th when the book is released!
It took me about halfway to get invested into the story but once I was, I was hooked. Dennard is a great writer, her words seem almost effortless. The spacing in my pdf was a bit wonky which made some parts difficult to read but I’m sure that will be fixed in the final version. 4 stars at the moment.
I really wanted to like this book. I loved Truthwitch and Windwitch, but I found myself bored throughout the first 100 pages or so. The main character is constantly bringing herself down and following the rules. While I understand that is part of the arc of the book, I found it repetitive.
It is always hard to judge a book on so little but I have to say this book is a nice bonus to the story. From what I read we learn a lot about the Sightwitch and their religion, power and way of live. Some characters from the serie are presents and I stopped just were the story really fall into the main serie.
I know some people are a bit sad about waiting for book 3 but I think this book is a nice way to wait and I am going to read the whole book when it came out.
Why oh why did this have to be an excerpt?? It was getting so good at the end there! I never request ARCs if they're excerpts and I was under the impression this wasn't when it first came up on NetGalley so colour me disappointed. But also satisfied. And desperate for more. I finished Truthwitch a month ago (still need to get Windwitch), but neither was a prerequisite to understand this. I thought it was a fascinating look into the Witchlands and, in my opinion, easier to follow than Truthwitch in regards to world-building. I'll definitely look for the full version when it comes out.
I'm so freaking excited for this book! The first 100 pages or so are amazing! It's no surprise I love this series and that I'm dying to read Bloodwitch, so I was super excited about getting this book and know more about the world, the characters, and the magic. This is mainly about Sightwitches and not quite what I was expecting... And yet, I'm loving it and can't wait to continue!
This book has a bit of a different display to it that I really enjoyed, I don't know if the book is like this but if it is it's going to be awesome... It contains diary entries, letters, and amazing drawings and although the main characters are quite new - and I did take some time to get used to them - I really connected with Ryber, and I think she is an amazing character!
This is a great addition to the series and I can't wait to see how it will connect with Bloodwitch!
