I had a review here, but suffice it to say I should just keep it to myself. I'm sorry to say that I have very little good feedback to share about this title. The characters were sweet together. That's all I have that's positive, so I'll leave it at that.
Really good book. I was intrigued from beginning to end. There were times where the two main characters annoyed me by their silly actions, I enjoyed this book. The ending could have used a bit of work though.
I’m almost finished this but not quite. The plot seemed to finish some time ago with a bit of a stutter towards wrapping up the intriguing prologue that eventually amounted to.... not very much really. It was a mystery without much mystery, a feminist tale of overcoming the odds with a heroine who succumbed to every whim of the men in her life. The romance was worrying more than romantic. Twice the madly in lust couple became violent with each other, but that’s okay, right???! Another thing that got my goat (one of many to be honest) was the fact there were stale sex scenes thrown in as if just to tick a box. I could certainly have lived without them. I will finish it to see if it suddenly brings me back round to the prologue with a thrilling twist but I’m not hopeful. Skim reading from here on I think.
I wanted to like this book but I just could not connect with the characters and the story was lacking.
Beneath the Scars was a good read. I enjoyed the romance part of it but wished there was more to the mystery part of it. That being said the author has an interesting writing style & I thought the book flowed very nicely.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Beneath the Scars has an intriguing plot. A female cop being shadowed by...well I won't give it away. The details regarding the situation are actually really cool. I just felt like the story got lost. It continued as an afterthought.
This was a good read and I especially liked the main character. I think I can appreciate a strong female character, as the main character, Lacey, is in the book. It has a happy ending, which is a plus in any romance novel. However, I thought it would be a little more suspense and wish the ending wasn't so rushed. Overall, I would read again from this author.
This was a pretty interesting story. I wasn't sure as I started reading it if I would like it or not. I am glad that I added this book to my reading list. I thought that it was a fast intriguing story. Thank you for allowing me to read this and write about it.

I am reviewing a copy Of Beneath the Scars Through BooksgoSocial and Netgalley:
Lacey Burke is a New York City Undercover Police Detective. She had grown up in the Foster care system where she was shuffled from home to home. That is likely why she is dating pompous overachieving Tyler Hathaway. He may be Stuck On himself but he is wealthy and can offer her travel and other great adventures. The problem is she is starting to believe there is more to life than just financial security. She realizes she is falling in love with her good friend and work partner Jason Reed. Jason is a womanizer though and Lacey doesn't want to.
After seeing a man on the Subway the nightmares started. A me,pry trapped in her subconscious ties her to this man she'd likely have forgotten.
I give Beneath the Scars five out of five stars!
Happy Reading!
Lacey was orphaned at a young age and bounced around in foster homes. She is now a NYC police detective who has a sugar daddy who buys her clothes, shoes and jewelry. She decides to dump the sugar daddy to take up with her police partner. There are nightmares, police taking down the mob and a stalker. I felt no connection between anyone. The story seemed to jump from scene to scene, with no cohesion or reason for anything that is happening. I felt I had no reason to care what happened to anyone in this story.
This story was so much more about the romance and sex then the plots and mystery. Lacey and Jason were partners for the police so a more in depth mystery was missed. Lacey was kind of heartless with the shallow rich guy although he didn't care about her. As the main character I expected more thought and kindness from her and Jason could be overbearing. Thanks for the chance to read.
Okay, so Lacey is a police officer. Great, I love strong female characters so I knew what I was getting into and was so sure that she would be one of my favorite characters because who doesn't like a female police officer in a suspense novel? I do! But who likes a police officer who doesn't give as much shit about her duty (that would've built up the suspense if tackled well) as her crush on this guy? I don't. Actually, I wouldn't have mind that as much if the guy wasn't a jerk sexist. What? I mean, I don't even understand the gist of the story. It was a cheesy, predictable romance that went wrong in all ways because I didn't give a shit about the characters or worried if they would end up together or not. I hate writing reviews that turn into rants, which is why I avoid saying too much about the books I didn't like, but this one really fused me. At least the essence of the book should've been made clearer in the blurb itself so the target audience would've picked it up and judged it on the romance that was majority of the book.
I did not really like this book too much. The plot was loosely woven with too much sex and too many dilemmas with quick solutions and conclusions. Unless the book is really about sex, there is no true central story, although one is led to believe it is about the relationship between the main characters.
So what I thought would be a pretty decent suspense thriller turned out to be less about suspense, and more about romance, and annoying characters that almost induce vomiting. When you read a blurb you can almost guarantee that you know what you're getting into. Not the case here at all. If anything, the suspense is almost nonexistent, and the focus is mostly on Jay and Lacey, and it could work if they weren't so annoying, and well, let's just say they're boring. Nothing about this novel is suspenseful, and shouldn't even be classified as such. Even women who like this kind of stuff would be disappointed in Carroll's novel. It promises a great deal, but falls flat almost immediately,
Part of the problem are the characters. In any novel you want characters you can like, or even identify with, but here, these aren't people you like at all. Lacey is annoying and spends half the book pining for Jason who happens to be a jerk, and a womanizer. Even cheesy romance novels will give you characters to cheer for. It's painfully obvious here that these two will end up together, and that should be the blurb. The stalker or whatever is just an afterthought. It's not powerful enough to move the novel at all, and the resolution is just meh at best. Carroll isn't a bad writer, but the blurb is very misleading. If you're a fan of suspense well, you'll be swearing halfway through Beneath The Scars. There's no suspense here, and the only joy comes when you finally finish it. You may not even be able to do that. I skimmed through half of it just so I could be done with it. Maybe there is an audience here for this type of deception, but I can't say I liked it because I didn't. Not at all.
With every novel I read and review, I try and focus on something redeemable about the novel. Some plot, or character that stood out, but here? It was just boring, and pretty predictable. I may be in the minority here in trashing this novel, and I feel bad because there is a lot of potential here, but it's wasted on a weak plot and characters who act like characters in a cheesy novel. Why is the blurb so misleading?? Why was I swearing halfway through this novel? Do people really act like this? So, if you want a cheesy romance with very little suspense this is right up your alley, but for those looking for a serious good suspense thriller you should look elsewhere.
The synopsis seemed promising but this story was an absolute mess. There were about five different plot lines going on and they were interwoven terribly. The synopsis said there was something dark about Lacey’s past and it was only half of the book. When it was resolved, there wasn’t any real detail on why it happened. Just a short blurb and I still had half a book to get through!
Lacey was very immature and so was her partner turned boyfriend. Their relationship felt forced for the plot line and I never really liked them together. Even the obligatory breakup before they get back together scene was horribly written and unbelievable.
I was given this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
Great tale that I truly enjoyed from start to finish. Loved it!
This book grabs your attention at the very beginning with the reader getting a glimpse into the mind of the mystery man who will stalk Lacey throughout the story. This mystery/suspense element along with the romance makes for a great read.
Lacey had a rough childhood growing up in foster care and basically raising herself after turning 15. She gives in to the desire to experience extravagance and hitches herself to a wealthy and boring man. While she is blue collar and loving her job as an undercover police detective, her stuffy boyfriend thinks it is beneath her. Thankfully she dumps the creep.
Lacey has an amazing and sexy partner named Jason who is a standup guy but Lacey thinks he is a manwhore and maybe she is starting to have feelings for Jason. The mutual attraction between these two is awesome and I fell in love with these two as a couple. Their friends are fun and entertaining and a few are pigs.
After a subway encounter, Lacey begins having recurring nightmares. When the person in those nightmares is her real life stalker holding secrets to Lacey's past she is on a mission for answers. How does he know her? Why is he after her? What does he want? He is creepy but it makes for an interesting portion of the story.
Enjoyed this book and recommend.
