I'm an avid fan of Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti series, and Beastly Things delivers much of what is enjoyable about the series.
Brunetti must trace a body found in the water - the unknown man carries no wallet and his face is severely damaged by the tides. While no missing persons reports have been filed, the victim has a distinctive disease. When the victim's medical condition enables Brunetti to identify him, finding the reason for the murder is even harder.
As Brunetti's identifies the victim's places of employment and his loved ones, it is possible to see how he may have brought about his own death.
Beastly Things gives us Brunetti with his characteristic understanding of his fellow man, his sympathy for the victims and their families and his understanding of greed/the dark side. The unique characteristics of Venice and its architecture play a large role in Beastly Things. Brunetti's friendship with those he works with and their appreciation of food also shine through. Overall, another fun, satisfying book in the Commissario Brunetti series.
