Many visitors are in town for the National Maple Syrup Festival including academics for a conference. One professor seems to have an abrasive personality and some conflicts with other academics in attendance. When one of Robbie's friends is a suspect in the murder, and one of her employees is also effected by the investigation Robbie gets involved. A detective that she is not familiar with is investigating the murder and he does not welcome her involvement. Robbie is good at asking questions and very observant. I love the setting of this series and the characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
A great book by a fantastic author. The writing is excellent and the mystery keeps you turning the pages. Characters are well developed. Highly recommend.
I was given this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
It’s spring, and that means maple syrup time! There is a maple festival, and Maddie enters her special maple biscuits in the contest. When a universally disliked judge chokes on a biscuit, it’s a bad sign, and, sure enough, he soon end up dead. When suspicion falls on her new employee’s father, Robbie starts to investigate. Can she figure out who did it before she’s the next victim?
I really like this series. The characters are realistic, and, as a random observation, I like that people have regular jobs (like an electric company lineman).
Robbie Jordan meets Professor Connolly for the first time in her restaurant. He doesn't seem to be liked among his peers. During a friendly cook-off, he almost chokes on her biscuit. Then much later, he is found dead, stabbed by an expensive chef knife. Now, her new employee's dad is missing.
Well-written and enjoyed the country breakfast restaurant setting. Yet another cozy that made me hungry. Robbie is a great, solid heroine. The mystery was good, but I figured out who the killer was. I hope to read the others in this series soon.
I enjoyed reading this book. I didn't know who the killer was. Birdy the cat and Chloe the cat are my favorite characters.
I received an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.
This is my first time reading any of the Country store mysteries. I believe that this is the fourth in the series. Telling you this I did not feel like I was missing very much starting on the fourth book.
The main character, Robbie, Has arranged a breakfast-themed cook-off at Pans ‘N Pancakes, visitors pour into Brown County for the annual maple extravaganza. The only problem is that one of the judges later ends up dead. This cozy mystery follows all of Robbie’s antics and makes you feel like you are there with her. This is a great little series and I cannot wait to start back at the beginning.
This is book # 4 in the Country Store mysteries by Maddie Day. Robbie has arranged for a cook-off during the maple festival at her diner of Pans N Pancakes. Also in town during this time is a conference on maple tree science. Those attendees don’t seem to like each too much and of course one of them ends up dead. No one seemed to like Professor Connelly but when one of Robbie’s friends is suspected she has to jump in and figure this all out. I love this series as you are drawn in as if you are one of the town members and you get pulled in by all the characters. The story is well plotted and keeps you engaged and it never drags which is so good because I hate that when you hit a lull in a story. Great job and will continue to read this series.
“I’m so hungry I could eat the north end of a south-bound mule.”
What a fun book full of colloquialisms like the one above. I can guarantee they are straight from Indiana because I grew up there myself. This was not taxing, just a truly enjoyable cozy. This series is set in Indiana, a great part of it in beautiful Brown County. A gorgeous place known for its charm, beautiful hills, Fall color, and artists on every corner. The tourism is very high and this makes the setting of a chef and restaurant owner fit into the story perfectly. Being familiar with Indiana does make this series fun to read but I think it would be enjoyable whether it was set on Cape Cod or in South Carolina. It’s just a really nice read.
Part of my reason for sounding so pleased with the book is that it is really well-written. It has a good plot; one that keeps you guessing. But it is her characters that make the book. Each one is not only well developed but is also an important part of the story. With all of their intertwining daily activity she creates a community we can see and one many of us can identify with.
This is Book #4 is this series called “Country Store Mystery” and Maddie has number 5 coming out at the end of July in 2018. While Book #4 could easily be read out of order, what I’d do is start on Book 1 now and get them all read up before Book 5 is out.
Robbie Jordan is back in the fourth "Country Store Mystery". She is one of my favourite protaganists. She is smart, loves to solve puzzles, has some flaws, is loyal and caring and is in a burgeoning relationship. I also like how she recently found her father and is also developing a relationship with him and his family. She does not inject herself into investigations unless she has a good reason and is usually welcomed by the small town police force.
This visit to South Lick, Indiana finds them celebrating Maple Syrup. It is a festival that involves a baking contest and activities out at the local maple tree farm. Robbie's newest employee, Tucker, is the son of the farm owner. When a visiting professor, Warren Connolly, ends up dead at the farm, after a public argument between him and the owner of the farm, a fellow professor as well, Robbie tries to find the real culprit and get Tucker's father released from jail. Her friend and chef, is alos being investigated as it appears it was her knife that was found with the victim. With some drug busts also going on and Robbie short handed due to Danna's soccer injury, she has her hands full.
I love the townsfolk in this series. They are all supportive of one another, although gossip still reins. The sayings that both Buck, the sheriff and Robbie's Aunt Adele come up with, have me chuckling throughout the book. The Pans 'N Pancake store is a great setting for these stories. An old time country store that serves breakfast and lunch as well as selling old time and antique kitchen implements is just the thing to make these stories seem real. The relationship of Abe and Robbie is sweet and developing at a nice pace. I so hope things continue for them. Overall, this was a great story, well written, great pacing that kept me hooked until the end. I will say I pretty much figured out the murderer about halfway through, but the reasons for the murder were still a surprise. I definitely recommend this wonderful Cozy Mystery book and the series as well.
Book 3 in the series and I can't wait to get to book 4! This is my second Country Store mystery and I love how down to earth the characters are. The colloquialisms are a hoot and Robbie is a completely believable character, someone whom you would want to know and hang out with. Much like all the other cozy sleuth heroines she has a great guy and is still unsure of how it happened. A great group of friends and an over whelming sense of adventure, this is a great character. It also doesn't hurt that the fabulous recipes to those tasty treats mentioned in the stories are found at the back of the books! Keep up the great work Maddie Day!
Biscuits and Slashed Browns is a fantastic cozy set in Indiana and the fourth in the Country Store Mystery book series.
The Maple Syrup Festival is upon the community and things start to really get interesting in South Lick and Robbie is caught in the middle of it all. A Boston professor, Professor Connolly, is dead and who killed him? The usual suspects are under scrutiny and Robbie jumps to action in helping her community.
As this series has progressed, Robbie has really grown as a character. I truly enjoy her growth as a character. I really enjoy the characters of South Lick. The pace and tension towards the Whodunnit aspect was done perfectly.
Another great addition to the series!
Thank you to Kensington Books for the review copy via Netgalley
Robbie is excited for the maple festival. There is also a conference going on with scientists studying the effects of the environmental changes in maple trees. Dr. Connolly is an annoying man with enemies both personal and professional. When he ends up dead, several people in Robbie's life are suspects.
The murderer is not the most obvious person in the picture but once again Robbie's life is in danger when the murderer believes she is on to them.
Robbie's continuing storyas the series progresses is enjoyable.
Title: Biscuits and Slashed Browns
Author: Maddie Day
Series: Country Store Mysteries
Chapters: 39
Pages: 292
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Rating: 4 stars
Biscuits and slashed Browns is the fourth book in the Country Store Mysteries by Maddie Day. Robbie runs her restaurant and country store Pans 'N Pancakes, in small town in Indiana in the heart of Brown County not far from Blooming-ton and the IU Campus. By this book she has proven to be quite good at solving mysteries especially murders, even better than the small town police. However it tends to get her into scraps.
I enjoyed Biscuits and Slashed Browns more than I did the first three in the series. I think that is because we have gotten to know Robbie and the rest of the characters. What I love about Maddie's writing is that the characters seem so real. Unlike other mysteries in which I figure out who did it fairly quickly I am not able to do that with Maddie's mystery. She keeps me guessing till right up to the end. I am looking forward to the next one in the series.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
I really enjoy this series and seeing what Robbie has been up to next. I like the food that is mentioned in the book and wanted to make some of the foods that were a part of the contest , even if someone didn't quite make it home from the contest. I also like seeing what Robbie finds herself involved in as she tries to figure out what happened.
I eagerly look forward to each installment of the Country Store Mysteries and an update on sleuth Robbie Jordan's busy life in Indiana. Despite the small town feel, the murders continue to show variety and the recipes sound delicious! I can't wait to try to make the biscuit recipe.
This series continues to get better and better. Robbie Jordan is settled in South Lick, her Country Store, Pans and Pancakes is a going concern. The town takes advantage a tourism opportunity by hosting the National Maple Syrup Festival. Visitors come from all over and Robbie even hosts an event at the store. The near by university has been mentioned before, and this time, the victim has ties to the school as well as the town. A chef's knife points toward Robbie's chef friend, so she naturally does a bit of sleuthing on her own. I like many of the secondary characters. Robbie's newish boyfriend Abe and her aunt are always supportive. There were plenty of twists and many new suspects to keep me guessing until the end.
Biscuits and Slashed Browns takes place during the Brown County Maple Syrup Festival in Big Lick, Indiana. Robbie Jordan and her restaurant Pans and Pancakes are taking part in the festivities, and Robbie is excited about all the business the festival is bringing to her quaint restaurant. However, when an attendee at a nearby academic conference on Maple Tree Science is found murdered at the Rao Maple Farm, the police have their hands full with plenty of suspects, as the victim was not well-liked. Robbie, a puzzle-lover at heart, cannot resist the challenge of trying to solve the mystery herself.
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end -- from the down-home characters, small-town life, the rural Indiana dialects, sayings and mannerisms, and the yummy recipes at the end of the book. And, of course, there is the matter of the perplexing mystery to be solved. Even though this book is the fourth in the Country Store Mysteries, it was the first that I have read, and I found it can definitely stand on its own without any spoilers from the earlier books. Biscuits and Slashed Browns is truly a delightful book, and I highly recommend it and look forward to reading the earlier books in the series.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are solely my own.
I love cozies. This did not disappoint. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it since this author and this series was new to me. I liked it and will definitely read more.
I received this book in exchange for a true and honest review. Biscuits and Slashed Browns is the fourth book in the Maddie Day/Edith Maxwell Country Store Mysteries. Having read her first book, Stirring the Plot, I was certainly honored and delighted to review Biscuits and Slashed Browns.
Robbie Jordan is the owner of Pans and Pancakes, a country store and restaurant located in South Lick Indiana. As part of the Brown County National Maple Syrup Festival, Robbie has arranged for a themed cook-off at her store. The conference of Scientists who are discussing global warming and the effect on the maple trees.
Of course, one of the Professors-Scientists is not well liked and has quite a few enemies in attendance at the conference and and in the town. When the professor ends up dead, and a scientist goes missing, Robbie is determined to figure out who the killer is.
Biscuits and Slashed Browns is a great cozy mystery. The characters are an eclectic mix, the plot believable, and the recipes will leave you wanting for more. (There are a few in the back of the book – another reason I love this series.
I have enjoyed getting to know Robbie and the people of South Lick. I am already anticipating the next book!
The National Maple Syrup Festival is in South Lick, Indiana this year and Robbie wants the diner/store to do well while all the visitors are in town. This is book 4 in the Country Store series and while you can read it as a stand alone you might have a better understanding of how the diner opened and the work Robbie has put into it. Several good maple recipes are included.
