"You do stupid things for family, like chase after assassins."

Thank you to Entangled Teen and Netgalley for an e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Last year I read PROOF OF LIES and absolutely loved it, it is one of my favorite undercover mystery adventure type books I've read.

Lies That Binds starts pretty soon after Proof of Lies ended. Anastasia and the group have been in several different European cities since we last saw them, and now they are in England looking for Marcus brother who is missing now as well. After that happens we get to see Charlotte, Julian, and Keira and how the group has changed slightly since we last saw them and has continued working on taking down the organization that had ruined all of their lives in some way. The dynamic in this book is a little different because Anastasia isn't having to search for Keira and is able to instead focus on the bigger picture along with everyone else working on the same thing. There were also some reality checks that didn't happen in the first one and were now having to be addressed before they created a rift in the group.

"At the end of the day, Keira was right - none of us were spies equipped to deal with this."

Overall I really loved this story even more than the first one. We get to know the characters so much more and we get to see their motives for why they are trying to take down the organization. This one had so many twists and turns that I was not expecting, and surprised me so many times. A few new characters were added in as well which was nice to see, and I liked learning there stories as well.

"These are spies, Anastasia, assassins. They're playing us. Playing you."

The heartbreaks, the betrayal, and the surprises that happened throughout this whole book were amazing and had me constantly needing to find more time to read it. I felt a lot of the same feelings that Anastasia did as well when it came to certain people and trusting them. I'm also so proud of her for not letting people change her view on things and stuck to her gut just like she did in the first book.

"Bad things happen, and they're not your fault. You can't control everyone."

This book didn't have middle book syndrome and held its own and I actually liked it a little more than the first one. I cannot wait for the final in this book and I am so sad we have to wait a full year for it.

"None of this is about you, Anastasia. You or Kiera. They get that. And we will bring them down."

After reading Proof of Lies and enjoying it, I was looking forward to Lies that Bind. Although this one ups the stakes, I didn’t find this one as engaging as the first. I had absolutely loved the dynamics between the characters but they just wasn’t the same in this installment. However, the action was just as entertaining. Plus I enjoyed getting to find out more about Department D and the work it had done.

After the events that transpired in Proof Of Lies, Anastasia Phoenix is more than ready to leave the world of spies behind her. Unfortunately, after her best friend is murdered and his killer leaves a message for her, Anastasia is drawn back into that shadowy world. Unsure of who to trust, Anastasia and her friends being gathering the other Dresden kids in the hopes of accumulating enough evidence to take the organization down once and for all.

If the first book was Anastasia discovering who her family is, this book was about her learning how to trust them. While this one was full of non-stop action, there were occasionally quieter moments where the interpersonal dynamics shone through. However, I felt as if some of the plot points didn’t have enough depth. In particular, I wish that the plan to collect the Dresden kids had been discussed and expanded on. It felt a bit aimless, particularly since none of them ended up playing much of a role in the story. Nevertheless, the plot in general was intriguing enough for me to keep reading.

One of my favorite aspects of the first book was the characters and their relationships. Unfortunately, most of those relationships changed significantly in this book. There was a lot of drama and angst. Additionally, I struggled to understand the motivation of each character. I also didn’t like the romance for most of the book. However, I did appreciate the emotional journey that Anastasia went through in this book though. I loved how Wallach explored the idea of the family you’re born with versus the one you choose for yourself.

Lies That Bind was such a quick, intriguing, light read full of globetrotting action that was a lot darker than Proof of Lies. Plus, I liked how Anastasia grew as a character in this installment. I would recommend this series to fans of YA spy thrillers.

I have a weak spot for any story with a conspiracy plot, spies or an international setting. Having all three of these elements in one story? Definitely the right way to start for me! Lies That Bind picks up where Proof Of Lies ended and show us the danger for the Phoenix sisters isn't over yet. They have a new situation on their hands, one that might even be more complicated than what they have already faced. Like in book one, it took me a while to get into the story, but as soon as I did I was hooked. The first part of Lies That Bind is mostly used as a base line which the rest of the plot and the next book of the series will be able to stand on. This kind of introduction is necessary and while it slowed down this book, I'm having a feeling book number three will be full of fireworks. Because like in the first book, it was the second half of Lies That Bind that really made my heart race. Why? The non stop action, plot twists, shocking reveals and international setting probably had a lot to do with it. There is no doubt that the ending left me wanting for more... Because I'm dying to find out how they will be able to find their way out. That and a few other reveals I will not talk about to avoid spoilers. But I'm feeling it in my toes the next one is going to blow minds.

The writing style makes it really easy to read this story, and despite the slower start Lies That Bind turned out to be a superfast read. And I also loved the use of foreign language in the text, which helped create the right international atmosphere. The descriptions of the places they visit are well done and make it feel as if you were there yourself. Free travel included while you are reading, another bonus! I do have to say I struggled a bit with the high dose of drama in especially the first half of Lies That Bind. I mentioned in my review of the first book that I wasn't a fan of the main character Anastasia because of her attitude, and this feeling hasn't changed. Trust-issues aside, the tension between Anastasia, Marcus, Antonio and Keira did get a bit too much for me. I guess part of this has to do with the romance, but in the end it was mostly the dramaqueen episodes that got to me. I still have a weak spot for Marcus and his little Spanish accent though. And it has been interesting to see how the characters react to the different situations. Even more importantly, the final part of Lies That Bind made me forget about all that drama and I devoured the non stop action as it was thrown at me. I can't wait to read the third book now and find out what the author has in store for us next! Like I've said before, this YA international spy series is fast-paced and entertaining and perfect for fans of the Embassy Row and The Conspiracy Of Us series.

Lies That Bind by Diana Rodriguez Wallach is the second book in the young adult Anastasia Phoenix trilogy. The series is a bit like taking James Bond and turning him into a teenage female who is navigating a world of spies, lies and alibis. The books are best read in order as the story picked up right where it had left off in Proof of Lies.

In the first book we met Anastasia Phoenix who had always felt on the outs wherever she’d been since her scientists parents had moved the family all around the world over the years. When they said there was going to be yet another move Anastasia was of course upset and refused to speak to them as they left on yet another trip but little did she know that would be the last time she would see them when a horrible accident happened.

Time passed with Anastasia living with her older sister, Keira, after their parents accident until one night Keira decided to throw a party. The next morning Anastasia believed Keira had male company so she left only to return to find a bathroom full of blood and her sister missing. Already having lost her parents Anastasia was determined to find her sister when it seemed no one else even believed Keira was even still alive.

Now the story picks up after Anastasia has found Keira with the help of Marcus, a boy that she finds herself falling for. The teens all group together to battle Department D that their parents have been involved with when it becomes clear that the danger is still imminent when someone close to Anastasia is found murdered with a message to her that Department D is still coming.

The series is yet again another action packed adventure as Anastasia and company again find themselves traveling the globe with danger around every corner. This installment however to me felt a bit like the middle book that it is with it touching on the previous story and seemingly filled to set up what will surely be a crazy ending. Still a bit over the top as far as believability with a group of teens battling the undercover group it’s one to just sit back and enjoy as the story unfolds. Even with rating a tad lower at 3.5 stars I’ll still definitely be looking to the next in the adventure to see if the evil Department D is finally stopped.

I was lucky enough to have a copy of this to read straight after finishing the first book in this enthralling series, ‘Proof of Lies‘ – I’m so glad because I really wanted to know what happened next and I certainly wasn’t disappointed by this sequel! This is definitely a series where I suggest you read the stories in sequence, though the author does a great job of filling in some of the back information to make it easy for new to the series readers to follow what is happening. Anastasia, her sister and the growing group working to bring down Department D are off travelling the world again striving to thwart those determined to stop them.

The characters are well developed, the plot a tangled web of lies and deception that is slowly being rewoven to share the true picture with readers . . . . or is it? Nothing is certain in this superb story. Who are the double dealing enemy working to stop Anastasia and Keira from bringing down Department D? Where are there parents – are they really alive? There are so many questions the sisters and their friends are seeking the answers to! Can they really trust everyone around them? What about Marcus and Antonio – not to mention their parents? Oh boy, does this keep you on the edge of your seat!

This is another action packed adventure, a spy thriller with plenty of drama, even more lies and deadly danger, a real page-turner that I have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending you get a copy to read!

Lies that Bind is second in the Anastasia Phoenix series by Diana Rodriguez Wallach. Anastasia has found Keira, alive, and they have plans to go into hiding after they helped Marcus find his brother. Before they get the chance to disappear, though, Anastasia gets devastating news. Her best friend Tyson has been murdered in a mugging gone wrong. She returns to Boston to attend his funeral, only to learn it wasn't a random mugging. Tyson was murdered as a message to Anastasia and Keira. This pushes her to decide to go on the offensive against Department D. Joined by Antonio, Marcus’ brother, and the continued help of hacker genius Charlotte and Julian, they begin tracking down people hurt by Department D, and collecting evidence to turn over to the CIA. But enemies prove to be allies, and allies enemies, leaving the mistrustful Anastasia even more uncertain. Coupled with even more soul-crushing news about their family's involvement and with one of their own the target of an assassination attempt, their group has some tough decisions to make.

This story is becoming even more convoluted and complex, in a good way. Really, who is safe to trust? Not just for Anastasia, but for the reader? Haha, I'm learning a new reason to not get attached to characters besides that every time I pick a favourite character in a story, movie, game, etc, they seem destined to die. Now it's that I shouldn't trust them.

I think I read the second book even faster! Missed my proper bedtime again, too. Julian's still my favourite character overall. And I patently do not like Antonio, for similar reasons to why I hedge liking Keira- the attitude of wild party person, combined with excessive drinking tendencies. I get why Keira us the way she is, hence the greater understanding towards her. As this story goes on, you learn more of why he is the way he is, but he still does some things that keep me disliking him.

The deep attention to psychological detail is evident in this book, as with the first. Antonio's reaction to Anastasia's mistrust causes serious friction with which I'm familiar. There's the backlash of Keira having been rescued by her younger sister. And, the biggest is Regina, Tyson's girlfriend, and once Anastasia's friend, who turns on her after learning she is the 'cause’ of his death.

I do have one recurrent annoyance that was in the first book as well. Anastasia mentions several times that she holds a 'double black belt’ in karate. While I'm not familiar with every style of martial art, I've never heard of this. I've heard of different ranks to a black belt. I suppose you might say 'double black belt’ if you learned two different styles, but that is never mentioned, and that phrasing would be better as 'a black belt in X & X’.

Still- highly recommended!

Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to read and review Lies That Bind by Diana Rodriguez Wallach. Anastasia is still reeling from the hunt for her sister Keira and the whole orphan and kidnapping ordeals when she jumps right back into the action with her cohorts and a few new helpers. She’s struggling with being unable to truly trust anyone or their opinions or ideas and things within the group become frustrating and tense. The new experiences prove that Anastasia has a right to be untrusting as the intrigue piles up all around her! Twists, turns and shocks keep the story going as relationships are in turmoil and the floor seems to fall out from underneath everyone that’s part of the Dresden rebellion. Mystery turned spy novel turned double agent story rates 5 stars for the pure unpredictability!

Thanks to Netgalley and Entangled Teen for a copy of the eARC in exchange for a fair review.

This is the second book, if you don't want spoilers please stop and read the first book.

Anastasia is back. She is in London with her sister to help Marcus find his brother. Although unlike the search for sister it is easy to find Antonio. Anastasia finds that suspicious and wonders if he is working for Department D.

Meanwhile, the life she left behind rears it's head when she finds out that her best friend Tyson has been murdered in Boston. Anastasia returns to go to his funeral and is shocked and horrified when her other best friend reveals he was murdered because of her. And that if she doesn't turn over her parents they are going to hunt down and kill everyone she cares about.

Allan Cross helps Anastasia come up with a plan and she goes on a mission to find other Dresden kids and give them an opportunity to take down Department D. Will she succeed or will she find that everything is again not as it seems?

Who can she trust?

I was a little worried when I started this I could barely remember the first book, but a couple of chapters in it all came back to me and I was engrossed in this. I still love Anastasia even though she has it rough in this book. She really finds that her circle is even smaller than she realized. Marcus is still loving and I love having the addition of Kiera, Julian and Charlotte. They are great.

I am not sure if this is the last book it didn't quite feel like everything was wrapped up. But as far as I can see it appears that this is it for now. I do hope she writes more I just love the characters.

I must admit that, even if I liked the story, I didn’t love it like I did Proof of Lies. Sure, there is mystery, romance, lies, betrayal and lots of action, but it couldn’t capture me fully. There was nothing wrong with the book, and you should absolutely read it. Maybe my expectation just were too high. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing!

Without reading the synopsis, I totally thought this book was going to be an adventure finding Marcus’s brother Antonio. I was wrong. They found him in the first chapter or two. He claims he no longer works for Department D and is no longer a spy. Therefore, he becomes a part of their group. (I don’t know about you, but I found that quite suspicious…)

Since that obviously wasn’t the story… The story is actually about Anastasia, Marcus, Keira, Charlotte, Julian, and Antonio trying to take down Department D after the death of Anastasia’s close friend. To do so, they travel the world looking for Dresden Kids whose families have been wronged by Department D hoping to collect evidence.

The overall story was thrilling and adventurous. Parts of the story were very predictable, but other parts caught me off guard. I’d say it was a fairly nice balance. The overarching theme though was trust. Essentially, Anastasia has an issue trusting people, which put her at odds with pretty much everyone. She’s by far my favorite character, and I loved the growth she exhibited by the end of the story.

I can’t wait for the last book in the Anastasia Phoenix series. (I think this is a trilogy…) If you like YA spy-themed thrillers, I’d highly recommend giving this series a try.

I’m going to be honest with you… I don’t even know where to start with this one. Lies that Bind picks up where we left off. With the heroics of Anastasia and Marcus, Keira is with them and safe. Only now, the person in danger is Marcus’s brother, Antonio, or is he? Marcus and Anastasia are off to save him. There’s something about Antonio you can’t quite put your finger on, but when he’s around Marcus, he’s different. Can you trust him? Should you trust him? Just when Anastasia thought she could see an end to this all, the group gets plunged deeper into the world of espionage. Can no one be trusted?

I truly enjoyed this sequel. I enjoyed catching up with Charlotte and Julian, slowly getting glimpses of their relationship developing. I would be lying if I said Keira didn’t frustrate me at times, but I understood she was trying to get some type of normalcy back in her life after her ordeal. I got my wish! We got know Marcus a little more… not as much as I liked, but it was enough for now. With this story, the plot thickens. Everyone you thought you could trust, you couldn’t… not even your own information. excitedly clapping hands I can’t wait to get the next book! And as always, I love the last few pages of pure information on events which really happened. I love when books can take a true event and incorporate it, flawlessly, into a fictional story. This grabbed me and I finished it in one sitting. It was nice to be back at Anastasia’s and Marcus’s side jet-setting across the globe, from Italy to London, back to Boston, to Rio… it was exciting and I can’t wait for the next installment!

"What would you risk to learn the truth?"― Diana Rodriguez Wallach, Proof of Lies.
LIES THAT BIND dives right back in where we left off at the end of book 1, PROOF OF LIES. Anastasia and crew are in London regrouping and formatting a plan to take down Department D! It seems book one was set in place to lay the groundwork for the globetrotting MC and her cohorts! And even though everything from her past seems to be a lie, Anastasia is holding it together. It's time for payback and the Dresden kids are kicking ass and taking names! That is until Anastasia gets a message that she cannot ignore -the suspicious death of a high school friend. Just when she thought it was safe not to look over her shoulder or around every corner, Department D throws in a little mania to remind her that they are out there and gunning for her as well.
In this book, Anastasia finds herself not trusting anyone or anything. Old habits die hard, Anastasia begins to close the walls around her and shut out everyone and the world just like she did when Keira disappeared. Even though she knows she needs the help of Alex Cross and the rest of her friends to bring down Department D and that the message they sent her was their way of shutting her down. Not to mention her parents could possibly be alive and that her whole entire existence has been a lie.
The Dresden kids are ready to find a chink in the wheel that is the well-oiled machine called the Department D and turn them into the CIA, so they can be shut down permanently. The world is not ready for the wronged kids that have been left orphans that are now rallying together.
I really enjoyed that someone could pick up this book without reading the first one and not be completely lost because almost all the main plot details are revisited at the beginning of the story. Sometimes it’s hard to remember everything that happened in the first installment of a series if it has been a while since you’ve read it, but readers will have no issues diving right back in. Thankfully I had just finished PROOF OF LIES and got to finish them back to back! Although, nothing can be done about the tremendous cliffhanger that LIES THAT BIND left me with! Let’s just hope that Diana continues to be a fantastic author and will hop back in the fires at the same location in book 3 as she did in book 2!
I had mentioned before that I thought the first book, PROOF OF LIES, followed along the lines of one of the Twilight Saga books; however, LIES THAT BIND takes a much darker and sinister tone. Imagine Jason Bourne teaming up with the cast of The Blacklist to go mafia style gangster on the corrupt world!
LIES THAT BIND continuously maintains the spy/mystery feel throughout the storyline, but we don’t get a whole lot of information as to what’s going on; which makes me think this book is just there to set up the finale in book 3. That being said, I did have fun gathering up all the clues with the characters and found myself screaming “NNNNOOOOOOOO!!!!!” at the end of the last page because I cannot wait to finish this series!
For those that are looking for more of the romance aspect in a book, LIES THAT BIND allows the budding romance between Marcus and Anastasia to build as the book progresses. Keep in mind these are teenagers so there is going to be teenager drama anytime there is a romantic interest. “eyeroll”
The pacing of the book is easy to follow along as well, and the storyline is very plot driven. I found this book much easier to read than the first one and finished it within one day!
LIES THAT BIND is an epic sequel to PROOF OF LIES and I would recommend it to fans of mystery, thrillers, and YA romance drama tropes. The story is also about discovering who you are and not accepting defeat! What are you waiting for go out and buy both of these books right now! You will not be disappointed!!!!

"What would you risk to learn the truth?"

What do you do when you learn your entire childhood was a lie? Reeling from the truths uncovered while searching for her sister in Italy, Anastasia Phoenix is ready to call it quits with spies. The only way to stop being a pawn in their game is to remove herself from the board. But before she can leave her parents' crimes behind her, tragedy strikes. No one is safe, not while Department D still exists. Now, with help from her friends, Anastasia embarks on a dangerous plan to bring down an entire criminal empire.
From a fire-filled festival in England to a lavish wedding in Rio de Janeiro, Anastasia is determined to confront the enemies who want to destroy her family. But even Marcus, the handsome bad boy who's been there for her at every step, is connected to the deadly spy network. And the more she learns about Department D, the more she realizes the true danger might be coming from someone closer than she expects…
Lies That Bind is the second installment in author Diana Rodriguez Wallach's Anastasia Phoenix series. The book continues the storyline from Proof of Lies. Anastasis has done the near impossible. She traveled across the world to Italy, found her older sister Keira, and rescued her from her kidnappers at great danger to her own life. She uncovered a shocking secret involving a dangerous ground called Department D, and some huge shocks regarding her own parents. Secrets that are still reverberating.
Now, she and her collective must try to find whether or not Marcus Rey's brother Antonio is alive, if they can honestly trust him. After all, he works for Department D, the enemy with the long reach. This story does a fair amount of traveling. Ana and her group, Kiera, Marcus, Julien, and Charlotte, travel from England, to Boston, to Rio just to name a few places. Ana, as the undisputed leader of the group, has some ideas at how to get back at Department D, and that involves the so called Dresden Kids.

The Dresden Kids are kids who have been wronged by Department D. The idea is to collect as much information as they can and then turn it over to the CIA who can hopefully shut down Department D for good. The problem is that once they involve others, will Ana and her colleagues fall into a trap? Will they have the leverage they need to bring not only Department D down, but also Randolph Urban, the CEO of Dresden Chemical Corporation who has gone into hiding? Will anyone else die thanks to Department D's malfeasance?

I join in others in saying that I will never be a huge fan of the so called romance between Ana and Marcus. There's a whole lot to hate about Marcus, but there is also a few things to be wary about when it comes to Ana's emotions and her drive to push people away when things get dangerous. There are so many things that have come out about her parents that I seriously question some of the ideas and steps that Ana and her group come up with.

Ana has gone from trusting nobody, to opening up her circe to others who she doesn't know from Adam and Eve. After all, Ana and Kiera are supposed to be in CIA Witness Protection, not running around the world trying to take down an organization that can literally destroy a person's life and reputation and kill an innocent without any emotions or regrets at all.

You also have to question Ana's motives when her own parents have so many unanswered questions about their own activities over the years. How can you honestly trust anything they say, after all that has happened? The story itself ends in a very twisted way. A way that leaves no doubt that the third book could either be the best book of the series, or a huge letdown if things don't go as Ana and her group hope for.

More lies, mysteries, intrigue, world travel and danger and murder are in this second book in the series. Who can Anastasia trust? Can she believe or trust anyone? How many people are lying to her? I enjoyed this second book in the series and look forward to the next one!

Damn this book is awesome. Anastasia doesn't disappoint in this second book. I'm so looking forward to the 3rd and final book. When Anastasia and her little group come together to find the other Dresden kids who have been wronged. Little does she know someone is working against them. Plus when Marcus and her finally finds his brother, things just start getting crazy. Anastasia doesn't trust that Marcus's brother Antonio doesn't know anything nor is done with Department D. Her gut is telling her not to trust him, but then she doesn't trust anyone. Then rumors fly that her parents are alive and behind everything bad... What can she believe? The chase and adventure is on to get evidence that not only prove that department D is still running and won't stop.

Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Contains possible spoilers from the first book

Lies that Bind is the second book in the Anastasia Phoenix series, I thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of the first book Proof of Lies so I was most eager to start on this.

This is a series that really should be read in order to fully understand the events that have already taken place, enough of a recap is given but it may still be quite confusing.

After trekking all over the place in the first book in search of Anastasia’s sister Keira and having a danger-filled and thrilling adventure; Anastasia is now staying in London with friends when they find out Marcus’s brother Antonio has gone missing. Now determined to take down Department D and locate other Dresden kids, they set out to collect enough evidence to shut them down once and for all.

I was impressed by the world-building and the intense plot is fast paced and full of non-stop action although it did very much mimic the first book; as with Proof of Lies I couldn’t quite guess who could and couldn’t be trusted! It really was a search for the truth throughout the whole book and many secrets were exposed.

Lies that Bind was an exciting sequel! It was mysterious, filled with wonderful characters that progressed throughout the book and the ending that leaves you satisfied but also wanting more. This book seemed to have more angst and drama than the first book which made me quite edgy.

What frustrated me in the first book was the hot and cold relationship between Marcus and Anastasia so I am pleased to see some progression. They worked well together and I thoroughly enjoyed their interactions.

I found Diana Rodriguez Wallach’s writing to be engaging and the storyline was exciting; I am definitely eager to read more books by this author.

"Lies That Bind" is a great sequel in the Anastasia Phoenix series. While the first book had a lot of character building plus a big pace slow-down in the middle, this one has a smooth pace that keeps you easily reading throughout the book. Although the story isn't complete, this sequel didn't feel like an in-between book, but rather, told its own story. Here, Anastasia is staying in London with her crew- including her romantic interest Marcus. Determined to take down Department D, they embark on a journey to find other "Dresden kids"- kids who have been wronged by Department D, with the goal of collecting enough evidence to turn over to the CIA and shut it down for good.

Although it helps to have read the first book to really understand the characters, this book is set up well to be read a while after the first- everything from the first book is recapped well (not in too much detail, but just enough to remind you of what happened in the first). I really appreciated that, as it's not always easy to return to a series after some time. While this one maintains the teen-spy feel, it almost begins to feel more like a police procedural. Nothing comes out that is too surprising, but we follow the clues they gather to the end of the book.

The romance really builds well in this book, and although there is some teenager drama, it seems more natural here. The relationships are well done (not only between romantic interests, but between siblings, children, friends, etc.). The book moves really quickly overall and so it doesn't fixate on most of the side characters (there's one that I think maybe will pop up again in future books), but the plot is really driven forward here. More of the mysteries from the first come to light, and I think it advances the overall story really well. I look forward to seeing what Anastasia will do next!

Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.
