No one knows how to cut you as deeply as family. Marcy needs to find out just how thick her skin can be when her family starts taking aim. Her husband Harvey has an affair with a model, daughter Amanda secretly gets engaged and becomes a callous bridezilla; all the while, all three of her children refuse to meet her new man, Jon. With witty dialogue and wonderfully built characters, Rothstein's second novel about Marcy Hammer is an excellent fast paced read.
This was a fun, breezy read - I enjoyed the pacing and characters. I would have liked a little more character development, especially with Marcy's boyfriend Jon. The characters were funny (especially Marcy and Candy!) and will have you laughing and turning pages.
I really enjoyed the pace of this book, the characters were likeable and engaging. I would have liked to see more of Jon and Marcy's relationship development, as Jon was portrayed as such a wonderful man, it would have been enjoyable to share their new romance.
This was an easy read, with humour and touching moments throughout.

If you love family drama with comedy thrown in, do yourself a favor and read this book!!
Marcy is in the middle of figuring out her life after separating from her cheating husband and her daughter announces that she is getting married. The plot follows Marcy and her family as they try to navigate uncharted waters after a separation and learning how to still function as a family. Throw in a mix of supportive friends, health issues, and Marcy trying to figure out how to be in a new relationship and you have a wonderful story in your hands.
I highly recommend this book, and will read more from this author.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for providing me with a free copy of this book.
This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Marcy is getting divorced after many years of marriage, after her husband had an affair with his bra model.
She has moved on with her life with the help of her two best friends Dana and Candy, and the sweetest man Jon.
By mistake she finds out that her daughter is seeing her husband's lawyer and that they are getting married.
Marcie is trying to plan her daughter's wedding, while she is having second thoughts whether or not she should introduce Jon to her kids all the while trying to escape her ex-husband advances because he realized that he might have made a mistake..
Laugh out loud funny, clever, true to the core, a little bit heartbreaking and a full of hope and second chances. This book will bring a smile to your face, make you cry and show you how weddings bring out the worst in anybody.
Full of colorful characters, witty and intelligent dialogue this book is a perfect read for those who believe in life and love.
A good book with the edge and understanding of characters, look forward to reading more from this author.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read a galley copy of Husbands and Other Sharp Objects. What a fun read! Marcy is a middle-aged soon-to-be divorcee, with an husband that wants to worm his way back into her life and a seemingly perfect boyfriend. Decisions about whether to move out of her marital home, how to deal with her three children and her various friendships keep Marcy on the run. Author Marilyn Simon Rothstein handles all of the topics deftly and humorously. The book is also a compulsive read - it is so entertaining that its difficult to put down. I hate to label Husbands and Other Sharp Objects as "chick lit," if chick lit is intended to be an insult to quick, witty and interesting female interest books. Not just a summer beach read, a book for anyone who wants a really enjoyable story.
This book was hilarious! And not just the story or the characters but the whole package; from the name to the cover design. I was really craving for a fun contemporary book and this was perfect.
I loved the character growth in this book. Marcy’s journey from being a married woman, who is dependent on her husband for everything to becoming an independent working woman. The flow of the story was such that she started with small things such as firing her lawyer to major things like moving in to the new house all by herself. It was so refreshing to see that she doesn’t choose to move all the way to Japan for Jon. She kept herself first, instead of following the man wherever he goes.
The relationship between Marcy and all her children is so natural, how the children grow up and become involved in their own lives leaving their parents behind and only needing them in times of distress. How one sibling steps in to pacify the situation between other family members. It was all so relatable.
Jon was the perfect boyfriend and let’s not forget how bookish he was. He knew the first line of all the classic books! And the way he was so perfect with his timings. *swooning* I thought the book would continue with him being Mr. Perfect but it was good to know that he was normal too when he asked her to file for a divorce or end this relationship.
I also liked how the story was fast paced, that sometimes months past by between chapters and didn’t feel incomplete or abrupt. I finished reading it in a day and I am still thinking about all the characters and the story.
I would recommend this book to everyone!
I really enjoyed reading Husbands and Other Sharp Objects. The characters were extremely relatable and I loved Marcy's humor and personality! There were many laugh out loud moments and I am looking forward to reading other books by Marilyn Simon Rothstein.
Thank you to netgalley and the author/publisher for a copy of HUSBANDS AND OTHER SHARP OBJECTS in exchange for an honest review.
What a brilliantly written story Husbands and Other Sharp Objects was. It was light, humorous, and enjoyable with just the right amount of drama weaved throughout. Marcy Hammer is trying to figure out how to live independently after her husband cheated on her. When her daughter gets engaged to her husband's attorney, life takes an entirely different turn as they all try to get along and plan a wedding.
This book had such an interesting cast of characters and was so fun to read! I would absolutely love to read another round of Hammer antics. I became so connected with them and their lives and would love to know what the future holds for their family. This would be a great weekend, beach or travel book. I highly recommend this entertaining read!
This was a very funny book. I loved Marcy the main character and since I already read Lift and Separate the story line was familiar. Marcy is one of those friends everyone needs, very funny and thoughtful. She is in the midst of a separation and trying to stay neutral as her daughter (bridezilla) plans her wedding. It's everyone's biggest nightmare and by the time the wedding comes and an unfortunate medical event happens that what really matters finally takes hold. I would definitely recommend Marilyn Simon Rothstein books. She's a hoot and I look forward to reading more of her books.
3.5 stars
Marcy is trying her best to swim the rough seas of helping plan her daughter Amanda's wedding, whilst trying to get along with Harvey ( her husband from whom she is separated), for the sake of Amanda's big day. She is having to deal with the aftermath of her failed marriage whilst also having hopes and dreams for her daughter's new marriage...something old, something new.
After 30 years of being married to Harvey and raising Elizabeth, Amanda and Ben, Marcy is now learning to become an independent woman, after she discovered Harvey was having a baby with one of his 32D cup size models. She has moved on with Jon, one of the nicest and sweetest characters in the book. He is patient with her as she struggles with how to introduce him to her children, but also has his limits with how long he'll stay on the side lines.
Added to the equation are Marcy's friends, Dana and Candy, her wonderful support system through all the drama in her life. Together with Jon, Marcy considers them as her extended family.
The array of quirky and colourful characters, even Marcy's dead mother, all add something special to this story. Adding in a lot of witt, sarcasm and laugh out loud humour, it takes this book up another notch.
All in all, a fun, entertaining, humour filled book with a feel good ending, I was glad I got the opportunity to read this book.
Note: This is my first book by Marilyn Simon Roth stein. I discovered this is her second book pertaining to Marcy and her family. However, the author did a great job of telling the story as a stand alone book.
Many thanks to Netgalley, Lake Union Publishing and the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Another winner from Marilyn Rothstein! This book is filled with laugh-out-loud funny, I've-never-seen-this-in-a-book-before moments. The last couple of chapters were both heartwarming and spit-out-your-milk. It takes a gifted writer to give you such a range of feelings.
I hope she'll be back with more from these characters, as I would surely love to revisit them again.
If you like stories featuring female relationships, family relationships, mild drama, or wedding planning Bridezillas than this book is for you! I was immediately engrossed into the world of Marcy Hammer, her three grown children, her two best friends, her cheating husband and her new boyfriend. I can honestly say that I loved this book from cover to cover, and found myself easily connecting with the main character more as the story progressed. A truly enjoyable read.
After doing some research on the author I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this is the sequel to another book about Marcy Hammer called Lift and Separate. I will DEFINITELY be adding it on my immediate TBR.
i received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Selten so gelacht - die Geschichte und die Charaktere sind so lebendig und voller Charme, dass man sich dringend ein längeres Buch gewünscht hätte.
Just terrific! I don't often read 'women's fiction' and this is so much more than that. Deep understanding of characters and how they are informed through their different stages if life. Realistic and funny. Finding her way to her own power the main character learns memories are just that and have their place in life but doesn't have to control a life
This was such a fun read! Marcy Hammer is separated from her cheating husband, she has a new boyfriend, and she’s dealing with her bridezilla daughter. To top it all off, her daughter’s future mother-in-law has “sticky fingers.” The book was humorous and light-hearted, but it also addresses real issues (divorce, the stress of planning a wedding, medical emergencies). I had read the first book, Lift and Separate so I already knew Marcy’s backstory- while I would recommend reading both books (because they are both great!) you could read this book by itself and still know what’s going on. I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.
If you want a laugh out loud experience, this book is for you. A sequel to Lift and Separate, the reader gets to see Marcy’s growth, from the end of a marriage due to her husband’s cheating, to becoming a woman who realizes she can’t always put herself last. Marcy’s daughter Amanda is getting married, and the family dynamics are hysterical. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and appreciated the mix of humor and sincerity.
