A truly excellent sequel. Just like I hoped, Garber gave us a sequel from Tella's perspective.
Her voice is a blend of forthright troublemaker and vulnerable girl looking for answers. The action was nicely paced, and there are tons of swoony moments that made me root for unlikely characters...
It looks like there will definitely be a book 3, which I'm really looking forward to. This author has surprises up every sleeve - can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
Thank you to Flatiron Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read an Advanced Readers Digital copy of "Legendary" by Stephanie Graber. I have read all of the books in the "Caraval" trilogy. "Legendary" was a fantastic sequel to "Caraval," as it told the story of Scarlett's sister, Donatella Dragna, aka Tella. In the competition, Tella makes a bargain with a mysterious criminal and has to discover the true identity of Legend. Fate replaces enjoyment in the game. Getting to know Jack and the other characters in Ms. Garber's magical world was enjoyable.
Legendary by Stephanie Garber
Caraval is one of my favorite books and got a solid 5 stars from me, so I was very excited to jump into the sequel and see what else this series has in store for us! Legendary focuses on Tella's story and is told from her perspective. It begins right after the first book ends (the next day, actually), so it's a seamless transition and I highly recommend you just binge this series since it's all out now. Tella is amazing! She's so easy to love and pull for, and I didn't even miss Scarlett (although, her story is far from over and she's still very much in this book). I loved seeing familiar characters and meeting new ones. And we get to visit a brand new, magical world that I loved just as much as the world in the first book! There are so many twists and turns, and I was left breathless by the ending. I can't wait to read Finale!
I absolutely love everything about this series. It is one that I will revisit every year, as if it’s a warm blanket on a chilly fall evening! Absolutely a favorite and I may own every edition that I could get my hands on.
UGH STEPHANIE GARBER DOES IT AGAIN. LEGENDARY WAS LITERALLY EVERYTHING I WAS HOPING FOR AND MORE. The entire Caraval Trilogy is the kind of series you can endless revisit without ever growing bored of it, because the details are just that immersive. There is always something new to discover, some stone you didn't turn over the last time, just waiting to give you a new perspective on the entire experience. There are very few authors who can write worlds like that, but Stephanie Garber is definitely one of them.
Legendary absolutely lives up to the height of Caraval, but ups the stakes so much that it you feel this incessant pressure to dive into the third and final part as soon as humanly possible when you finish it. And for me, Tessa was the perfect focal point -- I already liked her in Caraval but she has so much hidden depth that really has a chance to shine in Legendary. It cemented her as my favorite over Scarlett without a doubt.
Legendary by Stephanie Garber is an enchanting masterpiece that kept me captivated from start to finish! The vivid and imaginative world of Caraval had me spellbound, and the thrilling plot twists left me on the edge of my seat. The characters were incredibly well-developed, and I found myself emotionally invested in their journeys. Garber’s writing style is mesmerizing, filled with beautiful prose and clever storytelling. This book is a true gem for fantasy lovers, and I can’t wait to dive into the next adventure in this dazzling series! Highly recommend!
This one wasn’t quite as good as Caraval, but it was still good, super fast read! I was happy to see Tella going back to Caraval, and felt we got to see a bit more of it, than the first time, which was one thing I’d missed from the first book. However, by the end I did t really care about finishing the trilogy, but that’s more a me thing. My book club girls loved it, and picked #3 as a monthly read, so I did continue on, and was happy to finish the series.
I love this series so much!!! Legendary continued the high stakes and interesting magical world that I loved in Caraval.
In the books, Caraval is described in a way, that as soon as it starts, you can literally feel the magic around you, and this is how I felt every time I opened up this book and started reading it. I just got lost and engulfed in the story and I felt like I could almost feel the magic coming out of the book.
What a "Legendary" sequel to Caraval. A magical delight of a read that follows Tella once again into the competition, in it to win Caraval, discover Legends true name and maybe even destroy Caraval once and for all!
DNF
Unfortunately, I could not get over the writing style here and I could not connect with the characters in the first book. This was me accidently getting the second book before reading the first. I did not connect with this story.
What a fun follow-up to Caraval! Having Tella's perspective is a wonderful surprise and I loved the addition of Jax and the other Fates. Garber's descriptive writing is second to none and really allows the story to sing. I can't wait to read the final installment.
It was a good continuation of the series, although I didn't enjoy it as much as carnival. I love the family themes
The book was sufficiently enough and will work well for a YA audience. I expect it to circulate well. Its predecessor has done well in the library system thus far.
I read this in anticipation for ONCE UPON A BROKEN HEART, which I received a physical galley for. This was better than the first, but I'm still not too invested in the world or the characters.
I was a little hesitant to continue the series since Caraval was a bit of a miss for me but I was pleasantly surprised. Legendary is much more fluid in it's storytelling than Caraval was and doesn't feel nearly as forced. I think it's still missing some crucial elements that would make it a 5 star but it's a good addition to my classroom library.
This one fizzled out for me. I love the whole mystery of figuring out who Legend is. But about halfway through I predicted who it was, and hoped I was wrong because it felt too obvious. The character’s big reveal ended up falling flat. I did like the cliffhanger however. I’m very interested to see where it goes.
I really loved Caraval, I liked Legendary. I feel like the story is dragging, though.
Caraval was dark, Legendary is darker still. I liked it but I have a hard time liking the direction the story is going. I am beginning to care less about the characters and what happens to them. This was a bit on the depressing side for me.
I really enjoyed this book. While I loved the first book the best in the series I was glad to be able to continue the story. I liked the games of the first book and was not prepared for the switch from games to fates but I still enjoyed it. It was pretty fast paced and kept you on the edge of your seat throughout.
While I enjoyed the first book in the series, I did not continue with the second book, so I do not feel right to read and review this title. Thank you to the publisher for giving me the chance to review.
