The Healthy Living Handbook, this book is one that hits you on a three pronged approach; physical, Spiritual and mental. Health is very important and she shows us how to do that. She gives examples as well as including Faith which is where all comes from. She gets you to work on all three - eh - four of these things. Everyone should read this and learn.
I really liked the author’s view that we are three-sided people (body, mind, spirit), and that to neglect any one side of our beings is to be incomplete at best and perhaps even treat ourselves harmfully at worst. It was refreshing to read someone actually acknowledge that one’s thoughts have direct impact on one’s health.
However, there were many parts of the book that simply rubbed me the wrong way. For example, her insistence that one must pray in tongues or one isn’t really praying at all. That came across as very judgmental and dismissive. I understand what she’s saying about allowing the Holy Spirit to pray on our behalf, but I don’t think the Holy Spirit is limited in ability to pray on my behalf in a language that I can understand. I also took issue with the author’s insistence that using her (shockingly expensive) essential oil blend was the only thing that would help a situation. Furthermore, she advocates using essential oils without dilution, which I and many others in the EO world believe to be unsafe. Both of these were in the beginning chapters of the book, and I honestly had a hard time continuing to read, although I did finish the book. There are a few more examples, but I think these two will suffice.
Overall, the advice was fairly good. Building good habits in body, mind, and soul will lead to increased health overall. There were just too many smaller sticking points for me personally to be able to wholeheartedly recommend this book.
I gratefully received this book as an eARC from the author, publisher, and NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
Since I have been changing my eating habits I have become very interested in overall healthy living so when I saw this book I wanted to give it a read.
It is divided into three sections. I found the first section very powerful and a great reminder for me of things I already knew but don’t walk in daily. I neglect Holy Spirit so much, I need Him and I don’t talk to or with Him enough. There are some powerful prayers at the end of each chapter that I fully embraced.
The middle section was about organizing your home. I need to do this but I honestly have trouble caring enough. However, I did end up doing some cleaning this weekend and it does feel good have a home that is more organized, I just have trouble keeping it there.
The last section is about physical health. I really enjoyed this section and it reiterated the things I have been learning about health and even has me thinking about some things I haven’t incorporated yet.
Overall, if you are looking for ways to improve every area of your life this is a good book to pick up.
A copy of this book was given to me through Netgalley.com. All opinions are my own.
Good book for a beginner to nutrition and the Christian aspect makes it even better. There are a lot of good tips for young people to get a head start towards making good nutritional decisions. If you've ever read more in depth books on health & nutrition, this may be a bit too introductory, but does provide good advice.
