Boy this story will have you in tears.
The Daughter is a tale of love, sorrow, pain, manipulation, and learning to live again.
It’s hard to think as a parent of losing a child. And to have to learn to keep moving forward. Sometimes we don’t think we can ever take another step but we are all stronger than we think.
And Jess is one of the strongest.
I love psychological thrillers, and thought this one would be a gripping read based on the synopsis. Unfortunately I found it quite slow to get into, lacking momentum throughout, which meant it also lacked suspense. The best thing about psychological thrillers is the 'twists', however any twists in this book were sadly completely predictable. The main character, Jess, was quite an unlikeable person, meaning that the character we are all supposed to feel empathy towards is instead just an irritation.
Omg talk about a roller coaster read wow this book kept me on the edge of my seat threw out I just couldn't put it down this writer keeps you hooked and once your hooked your not letting go I found this book thrilling the characters were fantastic and well thought out and the little clues all the way threw keep you guessing until the end this book stays with you long after you close the book this book is well worth the read I promise you wont be disappointed
Gripping at times, other times I found it a tad slow. But overall a good read and I'm glad I gave it a go. Will definitely look for more of Lucy's books.
When you start a book that’s been written by Lucy Dawson you just know your hearts going to be torn, broken and sometimes put back together yet, not always.
This Mom has a secret. This mom has lost her daughter in an horrific accident at school.
There lies a return of her past.
I listened to this on audio and found it so emotional and touching.
Yet, there’s several stings in the tail as this story progresses and a twist.
If you reveal truths, just who suffers?
Brilliant.
I truly enjoyed this book , the storyline was addictive , in fact read this in two sittings , highly recommend you be gripped so easy to follow plot good a page turner for me a good book
The Daughter
I really enjoyed this book. I really like Dawson’s writing style, it made me emotional, horrified and surprised at the outcome.
It’s a sign of a good writer to me that I’m wiping away tears because of events I’m reading about. My heart broke a little at the events in the first half of the book. The second part gripped me further and I just had to keep reading to find out what happened. I can definitely recommend this book, four shiny stars for The Daughter.
The Daughter was just an okay read for me. Nothing spectacular, even the "twists" were pretty easy to figure out. Overall, it had that been there done that feeling, which was kind of a let down as I was hoping for something new and fresh to catch my attention and get me out of this book funk.
My biggest issue was the fact that I wasn't a fan of our protagonist. However, as a mama, my heart hurt for Jess' loss. I hope to never know the brutal heartache that comes with losing a child. Somehow, Jess managed to move forward with her life, creating a new family, even with the lies and secrets of her past haunting her at every turn. That's honestly what kept me turning the pages. I wanted to know if the demons chasing Jess would fully catch up with her and the outcome when they did. I wanted to know if Jess matured as a character; if she could become someone I ended up liking. I never ended up liking her, and due to this, I did some skimming. It wasn't always fun being inside Jess' head but I wanted to get to the end. I wanted to know if my predictions were correct.
My other issue was the use of the person's name during every conversation. This drove me up the damn wall. When I am talking with my friends or family, I don't call them by their name every sentence. Who would write that into a book?! Who does that?! I've honestly never seen that in all the books I've read until this one. For example: Louise-157 | Simon-218 | Ben-213 (times used in a 286 page book.)
And then there was Louise. Over the top, drama filled Louise. Everything about her character was very much contrived. What woman finds out five years later that her hubby had a two week affair with a woman who didn't know he was married, and then goes and takes it out on the woman?! What woman would waste her time five years later tormenting (physically and verbally) a woman who had no idea she was with a married man?! As I said it was all contrived, not believable, and over the top.
When reading a new to me author, I like to give them two chances. Not all books work for everyone, so I'd definitely check out another before calling it quits. And what didn't work for me may very well work for you.
I finished this book in one sitting, that's how good it was! Though the first part wasn't exactly suspenseful, it set the scene right up for the part two, that is, when everything started happening.
I love books where the author keeps making you wonder who the actual culprit is, while giving you hints that all point to different characters. And that's exactly what happens in this book!
I also really liked the way it ended on such a positive note, despite all the horror that took place before it.
The characters were all really well crafted, and I really liked that slight touch of "fate" that remained unexplained. It gave the story a sort of magical feeling.
All in all, The Daughter was a thrilling read, and it was extremely unputdownable!
Imagine this, seventeen years ago, your daughter passed away tragically, to get away from the hell that you've endured over the past months, you moved away from the town that started it all. Then, one day when you're least expecting it, weird things start to happen in your home. The Daughter by Lucy Dawson is a freaky thriller about lying, trust, guilt, and the after affects of tragedy.
Jessica's life was perfect, she was married to her high school sweetheart and they had a beautiful five year old daughter. Then, one day Beth sadly dies, and Jessica can't seem to go on. Her world falls apart, but she eventually picks up some of the pieces. Her marriage to her high school sweetheart ends, but seventeen years later she is remarried and has a two year old son. The past is tucked safely inside Jessica's mind, she rarely brings it out to reminisce in the sadness, but the chance meeting of a past relationship causes a whirlwind of chaos to happen in Jessica's home.
Really creepy and strange things start to happen, and Jessica isn't sure if these things are supernatural, or if someone is stalking her. The writing makes it so that you feel as if you are leaning one way, and then all of a sudden you aren't so sure anymore. Since I read a ton of thrillers, I knew what the twist was before it was explained, but if you are a thriller newbie, this will blow your socks off.
I love the cover of this book, it's just the right amount of beautiful and eerie. The story was decent, but again it was pretty predictable for me. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars, while I was entertained, I knew what was coming and that sort of put me off from giving it 5 stars.
Creepy, disturbing and twisty, right up my street (which is none of those by the way haha) One of those reads that sucks you straight in and keeps you there. This book shows just how powerful the human mind can be and how what happens in the past can shape the future. I try not to predict twists whilst I’m reading so I’d recommend you do the same and just enjoy the ride.
Thanks to netgalley for the ARC of this book. Jessica has to deal with her daughter's death, and then move on in her life after that. Unfortunately her past catches up with her in a very disturbing way. Highly recommended, and I promise you, you won't see the ending coming!
This was an intense read. Story keeps you guessing and makes it hard to put down. This novel is very good. One word of advice, have a tissue handy. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book. Although I received the book in this manner, it did not affect my opinion of this book nor my review.
This is the second book I've read of Lucy Dawson's. It was another really good read. It is one of those stories that drags you in immediately and doesn't let you go until you've finished. Highly recommended.
Lucy Dawson never lets me down. A tense page turner that I flew through, speculating furiously about what was really going on.
I actually can't believe I waited so long to read this , I read white lies and then realised this was on my shelf . I loved it although I found the beginning quite harrowing and there was definitely a tear or two . When Jess's daughter dies in tragic circumstances she is overwhelmed with grief and secrets , that I won't spoil . She moves away and starts her life afresh , its only 17 years later when she is remarried with a little boy that things start happening that make her think someone is punishing her all over again for what happened in the past . With a list of suspects as long as my arm , I did figure out who it was , but that certainly didn't hinder me enjoyment . Brilliant read . 5 stars from me
A tense psychological thriller that should come with a mascara warning.
Jess lost her daughter Beth in a school accident. She left her husband, Ben. Years, later she is back in the same area with her new partner, Ed. Strange things happen and suddenly it feels as if her past is catching up with her.
The story is tense, well told, the consequences of secrets and lies come to the fore. I did guess the protagonist and found the last part a little long - so four stars not five!
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for a review copy.
Secrets can destroy lives as well as minds. Jessica Davies has too many secrets and they're big ones.
overall i really enjoyed this story, the beginning was really sad, i really felt for the protagonist and what she was going through. I enjoyed the creepiness of the story and you could not really trust any characters. However i did see the twist coming, i kind of guessed who was behind everything, but i led how it played out.
I really enjoyed this story however it did not fully blow my mind so thats why its only a 3 star rating
Wow!! What a page turner. This story kept me guessing and kept me awake until I finished it. Highly recommended this book to all.
