Blimey this book should come with a warning - something like read without tissues at your own risk!
Seventeen years previously Jess get the call all parents fear. Her daughter Beth is lost to her. Guilt about her actions that led indirectly to the circumstances tortures her but she isn't the only one who thinks she's to blame. Forced to leave her husband and family Jess has to make a new start. Now she has a new family but she never forgets her first child....she thinks of Beth and her guilt every day. But someone else remembers every day too and thinks it's time that Jess pays for her mistakes...
I honestly spent a considerable amount of time crying during this novel. Losing anyone is difficult but losing a child? No one can understand that pain but the author does a solid job at taking the reader to a place of empathy for Jess (which serves to keep us on her side throughout) that is frankly difficult to read. When it gets to the present day story it becomes a little easier as it works into more of a psychological thriller territory but the sadness and longing of Jess is always apparent and heartfelt. Quite literally this was impossible for me to put down.....I read into the wee small hours until exhaustion took over and I face planted into my (wet) kindle. As soon as I woke up I finished it, even forgoing my Sunday morning bacon bap run to finish it. THATS how good this book is - I gave up bacon for it.
Hmm, sadly, I had a hard time getting on with this one. I never sympathized with Jess or her situation. It was repetitive and fairly predictable. The title tells you everything you need to know.
A tense, fast-paced thriller that keeps the reader guessing.
Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC.
I did not finish this book, unfortunately. I made it about 30% in. I just didn't connect with the characters and was sick of the bickering.
The Daughter by Lucy Dawson jumped out at me for two reasons. The first was the book cover and description, and secondly because since discovering one of Lucy's books in the library a few years ago I have been desperate to read more from her. It seemed like she had taken a break, and now seems to be back with a bang!
Lucy's books have always in my experience been gripping and addictive, but recently her work has gone up a notch as her plots get darker and more twisted! The Daughter is no exception. Based around Jess and the tragic loss of her daughter I moved from feeling incredibly sad reading about her loss, and the impact of grief on her, to creeped out by what is happening years later.
Did I love it? I have to be honest and say that in parts I was a bit meh, which I hate to admit being such a fan of her work. But the book recovered itself and yeah, without spoiling it, or being cliche, there is a twist. I wont say more than that!
For me, not my favourite Lucy Dawson book, but it certainly wont put me off reading more of her work!
After experiencing the tragic death of her 5 year old daughter, Jessica tries to move on. However, someone wants her to pay. I believe this is my first Lucy Dawson book but it won't be my last. I thought the story was very entertaining. The mystery behind what was happening to Jessica was intriguing. Even though I had it figured out more than halfway, there were still some surprises. A good mystery that helped me out of a slump.

The Daughter
A great psychological thriller that will hook you from the first few pages.
I struggled to put it down I just had to find out how it would finish.
Great twist at the end, although I guessed what it was it didn’t put me off finishing the book.
This is a good modern thriller. There are lots of twists and turns which will keep you reading to the last page.
Thank you NetGalley for the honor of reading this awesome book.
I love it from start to finish. I could not put it down. It was such a good read. You’ll want to add it to your TBR list.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book as an arc.
I have never read any books by this author before, and I did enjoy it. It is awful sad at times, the grieving parents are portrayed extremely well. When Jess and Ben have moved on over the years, they think their lives have settled down, however, someone is hell bent on revenge for what they see as their life being ruined. Plenty of red herrings, it takes a while to figure out just who is out for revenge and there are plenty of unsettling events and creepy moments along the way. I felt some of the motivations of the characters were slightly unbelievable but all in all this was a really good read and I would certainly read more from this author.
A gripping read! I thoroughly enjoyed this and read it in one sitting!
Thank you very much to netGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy of The Daughter by Lucy Dawson my review is honest and unbiased in any way.
Absolutely loved this book the way it kept me hooked all the way through and wow what a twist highly recommend this book to everyone!!!
My first book by this author and I am so pleased I found her. This novel is well written and the characterization of both characters comes alive on the pages. Very fast paced and very intriguing. I enjoyed how it kept me hooked and it was an original story. Nowadays so many books read the same. Highly recommend
The start of this book really tugs at the reader's heartstrings when five year old Beth dies in a playground accident. Jessica finding it impossible to continue with the life she has known, leaves her husband and moves away.
Seventeen years later Jess has a good life with her new husband and young son. When they are planning a house move her past suddenly catches up with her. Strange events keep happening that seem connected to Beth. Hasn't Jess suffered enough for past mistakes?
This was a good read that kept me engaged. I did guess what was behind it all, but that didn't spoil my enjoyment. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
the daughter by Lucy Dawson.
Jessica Davies lost her daughter Beth 17 years ago. now she is married to ed and has a two year old son James. ed knows about her past. something is happening and she doesn't know who or why? is it her dead daughter trying to communicate with her? or is it someone from her past?
this was a very enjoyable read. I liked the story. I had my suspicions of who it could be. this is a twister of a read. 4*.
After reading and being a tiny bit disappointed with this authors works in the past I stepped into this book with a high level of trepidation- but I was left pleasantly surprised.
The first part of this book- it did exactly what it set out to do- it really made you feel for Jessica- the descriptions and feelings around Beth's death were very hard hitting- and the author wrote it beautifully.
Told in 2 halves- I found the first half after Beth's passing a little draggy and over the top- but the second half had me gripped.
Yes it was very predictable- I knew who the perpetrator was well before it was revealed- but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the story.
This really was a book you kept turning the pages on- and it had everything going for it- heartbreak, second chances, thrilling aspects.
I won't shy away from this authors work again- in my opinion this book redeemed my faith in Lucy Dawson as an author.
The Daughter did certainly keep me guessing, when I thought it was going one way, it took me on a completely different tangent. The beginning of the book was actually quite devastating and surprisingly, then all of a sudden it flashes to many years later and it almost felt like a different book. Some of this novel was a bit tedious but all in all an interesting mystery about betrayal, tragic circumstance and revenge.

When Jessica’s daughter Beth dies in a freak accident ,she walks away from her life and her loving husband. Seventeen years later she has rebuilt her life , is married again and has a two year old son . But when strange things start happening at her new house and old secrets start coming out in the open Jessica knows her past is coming back to haunt her
The Daughter is a compelling psychological tearjerker thriller by Lucy Dawson. It was easy to guess who the culprit but there were more twists after that which caught me by surprise. I would definitely recommend this book to all psychological, suspense ,thriller fans.

I received a free ARC from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. The Daughter was suspenseful and full of emotion. I felt for the mother, Jess, when she lost her daughter in the beginning of the book. I actually cried real tears for this fictional life lost and the grieving mother. There was a moment where I didn’t thinkI would be able to finish the book. When malicious things began happening almost two decades after her daughter, Beth’s, death, I immediately began to suspect Jess’ new husband, Ed. Everything just seemed to point to him. Then the nanny begins saying she does t feel safe around him. That sealed the deal for me. I was shocked to find out the nannah was really Simon’s daughter. I am usually good at predicting endings, but she never even crossed my mind as being the nanny and suspect. I thought she could be responsible for the actions taken against Jess, but I never imagined she was living under her roof under the guise of a nanny! The part where she accuses her father of spying on Jess seemed a bit of a stretch. If he were spying on her, I feel like he would have figured out his daughter was the nanny either by hearing her voice or catching a glimpse of her. I also didn’t like how the ended said there was a package with a white Rosen on top and we don’t find out what the package was.... will there be a sequel?
I really enjoyed this book which had lots of twists and turns throughout. I certainly didn’t know who to believe. It started at a good pace and continued right to the very last page. Would definitely recommend this book
