I actually really enjoyed this book. It had a cute backstory, nice setting, interesting characters and a good spark between the two lead characters. I found it to be a satisfying beach read.
Now I have to go find more Kat French books to read!
Such a fun read. Violet inherits a mysterious pier from her deceased grandfather. She leaves for the summer against her Parents’s wishes. Violet leaves her safe place, which includes a sensible boyfriend.
Very well written.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.
A lovely English story about Violet who leaves her parent's home after an inheritance from her grandfather of a seaside pier and a flat (apartment) nearby. Violet meets a neighbor who she eventually falls for but he's married to a gal who left him for Hollywood for years without divorce. What's a gal to do then? Violet gets to opening businesses in the old pier and has great success until it all falls appart. Great read for summer fun.
Book Review - A Summer Scandal by Kat French - Five Frothy, Foamy, Flirty, Fun Stars
Much like the waves of the shores this is set amongst, A Summer Scandal crashes over you, leaving you drenched, exhilarated and longing to ride the surf again when you get to the end.
This is Kat at her best. With a leading lady who isn’t afraid to be as individual as the tips of her hair, Violet blasts into Swallow Beach with her personality bubbling over. However, not all of the residents are happy with our new arrival. When the local Mayor starts to campaign against Violet, it would seem she’s already making waves in her new town.
Violet just wants to find a place to belong. She’s not found her fit before and the lure and mystery of Swallow Beach was enough to drag her in. Now with the charismatic Cal next door, is it more than the vintage fixtures and fittings attracting her to the top floor?
I loved how Violet’s effervescent personality sang off the pages. She didn’t have a lot of confidence in herself but you could see from the eyes of others just how she drew them in like a magnet.
It was wonderful to have the mystery of Monica, Violet’s grandmother and her untimely demise woven through the modern day story, as we read flashbacks and gain insights into her life and the place she held so close to her heart.
I could literally not put down this book. There is so much heart in this story, from the tiny new friendships woven with the young and old, to memories of the past; it grabbed a hold of me and refused to let me go. Highly recommended.
Great read. Quite emotional to read but humorous sections balance this out nicely
I liked how the book was interspersed with sections of the grandmothers diary. Quirky range of characters who draw you in to their stories.
Another great book from Kat French - can't wait for the next one!
What can I say? It’s well written, funny, sad, serious and enjoyable. I laughed out loud at one point. It has romance, humour, secrets all wound perfectly together to create a fabulous read.
Violet leads a simple, easy life with a quirky fashion sense and job. She has inherited a pier from her grandfather and along her journey into discovering the grandmother she never met she meets some wonderful characters who become part of a life she never knew she would have.
Violet inherits a pier located at Swallow Beach thanks to her Grandpa where she meets Calvin her new neighbour, as she reopens the newly designed pier for adults with partisan shops.
Violet's mum reveals secrets to her about her grandma she didn't know and the events which took place at Swallow Beach and why they originally moved away.
Violet upped and left the safety net of a husband to hopefully be though he was darn keener than her and she stuck up for herself wanting to spend summer in Swallow Beach instead. Where she meets Cal, a new love interest her flat is neighbour to and he's a leatherworker like she's a costume maker. The only trouble is his mum whom is mayoress and wants to see the pier remain shut.
Violet makes friends with Barry and his granddaughter Keris, whom remember her grandmother. However as she discovers her grandmother's affair with T, she sets about discovering who T is just as Calvin's wife Ursula randomly shows up after years of being gone...
I love the mystery and rediscovering her family past, I especially loved the fact that the flat she moves into is a frozen in time historical haven making her closer to her now gone grandparents too. The love blossomed and the character of Calvin's mum loved to be outlandish assuming the pier was becoming a sex den/hide out. Violet is a vibrant character all round and comes so well with all the events which happen to her a true headstrong main protagonist. Kat writes great beach reads which never disappoint and I also love the vibrancy of the cover alive with summer sunset colours.
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
I enjoyed this book. Its a good story with a few surprises along the way. When Violet's grandfather dies he leaves her a letter that will change her life. Her grandfather Henry and her grandmother Monica fell in love with Swallow beach when they honeymooned there. They not only bought a flat but also the pier, both of which have now been left to Violet. Violet's neighbour at the flat in Swallow beach is Calvin who quickly becomes a good friend as does Barty another neighbour. The pier has been closed for many years, can Violet reopen it? The local mayoress, Gladys, is a bit unwelcoming and doesn't make life easy for Violet but her strong character helps her to overcome many obstacles. She never knew her grandmother but now, thanks to finding her grandmothers diary, she has an opportunity to understand the past. A good holiday read
Another fantastic book from kat that draws you in from the very start and yet another smoking hot character 😉
Violet has led a very steady, stable life with her sensible boyfriend. She thinks nothing exciting will happen in her life until she discovers a whole secret family history on the death of her beloved grandfather. He has left her a flat and a pier in Swallow Beach where he lived with her grandmother. She decides to seize the opportunity to live life dangerously and find more out about her family’s past. It doesn’t hurt that her new neighbour, Cal is seriously hot. I certainly got drawn into Vi’s search for the truth of what happened all those years ago. Another great story from Kat. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. This was a well written book with some great characters and I shall definitely look out for other books from this author.
This was a very intriguing story! I loved the heroine from the start, but it took a while to warm up to the hero. It was great that the author showed some of his point of view, which went a long way toward endearing him to me. It didn't hurt that he was hot, lol. The mystery was intriguing, the secondary characters engaging. All in all, this was a great summer read!
It's no secret that I'm a huge Kat French fan and have read all of her books to date. I didn't think any of her books could knock my favourite off my top spot, but this one did. The story centres around violet who is left something in her grandfathers will so she goes off to this glorious sea side town to find out more about it and her grandmother too. She finds a lot more the than what she bargained for. I loved all of the characters in this book. I truly loved how real violet came across to me even though she is slightly quirky and feels like she doesn't fit in, the way she was written made her feel so realistic. The story is so well written and hooks you right from the very beginning and has some loop the loops along the way but for me this made me keep reading as I was gripped. I went through every emotion possible along with the characters.
This is a fantastic beach read for the summer hols, so if you see it at the airport pack it in your hand luggage right away as you won't want to miss this one.
When Violets Grandfather Henry dies and bequeaths her a Victorian pier and a beachside apartment, Victoria is totally thrown, why did her grandfather have these and whats the story behind them???
When Violet moves to Swallow beach for the summer to live in her new apartment things start to become slightly clearer for her, she is so different to her parents is she now finding out that that she follows more of her grandmothers attributes???
This is a good story with all the skeletons having to come out of the closet, well written and a pleasant read.
This book was very well written with great characters and excellent story plot as well which has you hooked very quickly. It's full of highs and lows and romance and also has you laughing. Set in beautiful seaside resort and wants you to hear more to what will happen. Perfect holiday read.
Violet decides to move to the beautiful seaside village of swallow beach as her grandfather has left her a flat along with other things in his will and it's where he was happily married to his wife but sadly where she died and he hasn't been back. She didn't no anything about this place and that it even existed but she's out with her boyfriend who proposes to her but she knows it's not what she wants and she doesn't no how to tell him. She decides to go just for the summer to this seaside place and see what it's all about. Once she arrives she sees the flat and pier she has been left and she really wants to rejuvenate it and make the pier grand again. She soon meets Calvin and she soon thinks she wants him and starts giving her inspiration into how to bring the pier to life again. Problem is not everyone in the village is keen on her idea and one person really tries to put a stop to it but can she do that and does Calvin and violet get closer together. Tensions teally start to build and life gets difficult she has also been trying to find out more about her grandmother and learns things she wasn't sure she wanted to. Can everything work out or do things get hard and does she end up staying or leaving and does she find her romance or not. A very sexy read.
This follows Violet's journey to the old ho,e of her unknown Grandmother's seaside town. She meets Cal and sparks fly but he has a wife. Violet opens up the pier much to the chagrin of Gladys, Mayoress and Cal's mum. Violet learns more about Monica - her Grandma, through reading her diary. She finds her Gran wasn't perfect but it makes her more adventurous in her own life choices. A romantic, tender story. Very enjoyable. A brilliant read.
