Oh my goodness, this book!!! Dark, chilling, desperately sad. Clair Allen is a master storyteller and she creates superb dark stories that unravel and leave you stunned.
Great read! Looking forward to reading more by this author! I highly recommend this book and author to all!
Her name was Rose was a read that sinks it's hooks into you, but not right from the start, it took a little bit to settle in but once I did - vroom we were off.
This is one of those books that has an emotional reader link, whether that be by sadness, pity or goodness, Emily has you feeling a lot of things, sometimes sheer frustration! As the plot unfolded I didn't see it all coming and this was great for keeping me on my toes.
All in all this author, Claire, was new to me and certainly will have me looking out for her future books and dipping into her back catalogue for more too.
I recommend this pyschological thriller.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to review this book and to be an early reader via NetGalley! However, I will not be writing a review for this title at this time, as my reading preferences have since changed somewhat. In the event that I decide to review the book in the future, I will make sure to purchase a copy for myself or borrow it from a library. Once again, thank you so much for providing me with early access to this title. I truly appreciate it. Please feel free to contact me with any follow-up questions or concerns.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this ARC of Her Name was Rose by Claire Allan.
Emily is horrified to watch the woman that she allowed to pass her on the street get hit by a car, even more so when she is notified of her death. How could this have happened, and how has she been spared? Completely fixated on Rose, the victim of the accident, Emily slowly starts to eek into her life, and becomes obsessed with this beautiful woman and her seemingly perfect life. But it doesn't take long for Emily to realize that things aren't always what they seem.
This was pretty middle of the road as far as a suspense novel goes. It was very readable and compelling, but I don't know if it was the strongest story line I've ever read. There were plenty of elements that felt very reaching and unbelievable. But hey, I was entertained the whole time.
The old saying the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence is a theme throughout this book. This booked ticked all the boxes for me, it had twist and turns and was an easy read that I could not put down. Emily becomes obsessed with Rose’s life after seeing Rose get killed in a tragic hit and run accident Emily is paranoid that she was the intended victim of the hit and run and it all starts there. In no time Emily has taken on parts of Rose's life and as she gets deeper and deeper into her life, she starts to realise all was not what it seemed. I did not find Emily a likeable character and I questioned her judgement on more than on occasion, she is not someone I would spend time with in real life. While at times there were some predictable parts they were few and far between and did not detract from enjoying the book.
A totally gripping tale with wonderful characters. I didn't want to put this one down and just wanted to keep reading until the end. Well worth a place on the bookshelf.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
Unfortunately I read this book a while ago and seem to have missed it when writing reviews. - sadly I cant remember enough detail to give a full review.
However, thanks to NetGalley for the ARC :-)
I tried twice to get into this book and failed. An interesting premise, a woman let's another go ahead of her after exiting a lift and the woman Rose is killed.by a speeding car. Emily, the other woman, riddled with guilt then proceeds to investigate Ross's life and applied for her job. A novel that could have been shorter and not for me.
I dived into this a bit blind. I skimmed the blurb and thought, well, it's on my Kindle, it must have caught my attention for some reason, so here goes. No more than a couple of pages in, and I was hooked. This falls easily into the page-turner category.
Emily witnesses a tragic hit and run. Emily is a fragile person with a troubled past and finds herself fascinated by Rose's, the victim's, life. It's there for the world to see on her Facebook page. It's the perfect, idyllic life, and she was the perfect, idyllic wife and mother, virtually beatified by her husband and all who knew her. Especially her husband. Emily's life was a bit of a train wreck, so…what if she stepped into Saint Rose's shoes? But no one really knows what goes on behind a stage of perfection.
This rolls along at a consistently good pace, it's tense, suspenseful and keeps you guessing. You find yourself pointing at one character, and then no, that 's a a red herring, it must the other one…or is it?! Very skilfully written, with depth and feeling.
Compelling, thrilling and emotionally charged. I was totally addicted, and I'm certainly going to read more by this author.
The only reason I haven't given this five stars is because there were one too many grammatical blunders: and I'll never let off a 'was sat' lightly. Really does make my nose twitch.
I didn't love this, I didn't actually finish it in the end. Thanks for granting me permission to read it but I don't think this author is for me, so I won't be requesting any more of her books. I feel like both of the ones I've tried to read so far could have benefitted greatly from another edit, 452 pages is ridiculous for a standard psychological thriller of little substance.
Very intriguing book. You will find that the pace and tone change quite often so be prepared for that. I found that the ending was a bit anti-climatic but didn't change my overall opinion of the book too much. Some characters I liked and some I didn't but overall I quite liked this book. It won't be for everyone though. Still well-worth a read to give it a try.
Didnt download correctly so I am unable to review this book. I'll probably purchase it on amazon as the book sounded interesting
Emily is sharing a lift with stranger Rose and her son Jack, when the lift door opens Emily smiles and lets them exit the lift first, as they walk towards the road Emily sees Rose step into the path of a speeding car that knocks into her, killing her instantly. Emily thinks the car was meant to have hit her!!
Emily after splitting with her ex Ben has been using Anti Anxiety pills and alcohol as an emotional crutch, she becomes obsessed at looking at Rosie’s happy life on Facebook. From the outside they look like they had the perfect life and happy marriage, but as we all know we only see what people want us to see and with everybody sharing their happy memories on Facebook it is easy to see why people can become jealous of somebody else’s life!!!
A book that starts with the shocking scene of Rosie’s death, that keeps you fully immersed, there are loads of red herrings along the way to keep you guessing until the final page.
An easy reading book I read in 1 sitting and the ending has left me quite dizzy!!
Emily had not had the best of luck in her personal life and things were about to get even worse. Whilst out shopping one day she is witness to a hit and run crash where the young mother was killed outright. Emily truly believes that the driver of the car was aiming for her and Rose was killed in her place. Riddled with guilt Emily begins to try and learn all she can about Rose even to the point of applying for and getting the job that Rose once did. As the story develops we learn more about Emily's troubled past and about the life that Rose led. The characters are well developed and the story is generally easy to relate to. I did find myself drawn in and rooting for certain characters.

It took a few chapters for me to really get into this book but I’m glad I kept reading. The story had me guessing the entire way. I do think there was a missed opportunity with her ex Ben, it seemed like he was going to play a bigger role in the story then he did. Overall I though the story was good and would read another book by this author.
I really liked the premise of this novel and the opening was really gripping and raised my hopes for a great read. But unfortunately, the book didn’t keep up its momentum and, while I appreciated the quality of the writing, there were a few things about the novel that I really didn’t enjoy.
While I did sympathise to an extent with Emily, I also found her very frustrating and very self-absorbed. I didn’t feel her back story was developed fully enough for me to really care about her, and, in the end, I didn’t really like her.
And I found too that the eventual ‘reveal’ about Rose’s life was a bit too obvious, while the ending just wasn’t believable at all.
That said, the writing is sound, and the author certainly has talent. But it’s a shame that, despite there being a great deal of potential here for a really thrilling and nail biting story, it really didn’t fulfil its promise.
Fab read. Could not put down. Highly recommended to all. Believable characters. Great author. Will be watching out for more titles.
This was one of my holiday reads this year and it was definitely a good choice for a beach read as it’s one of those books you won’t want to put down once you’ve picked it up. It tackles some difficult issues but Claire Allen has obviously done her research and is able to convey her story without cliches so that it stands out as a believable and realistic portrayal of the themes explored.
And those themes were very dark and disturbing in nature at times. With the huge increase in our use of social media, it seems that everything we do in our lives is now online for all to see. We take pictures of our food, we filter our selfies and share the most positive areas of our everyday lives. We are creating the “perfect” version of who we are with all the crap edited out. So is it any wonder we feel like we have to live up to those perfect ideals and choose to ignore what we really know, which is that nothing and no one can really be that perfect. But after Emily watches a stranger step out in front of a car when she lets her go before her, she becomes obsessed by the beautiful Rose who seemed to have the perfect life. By finding her on social media, she is able to stalk her, finding out about her family, her job and the beautiful home she shared with her husband and son. So slowly, she is able to ingratiate herself into their world. But as we all know, nothing is ever as it seems.
The characterisation here was spot on and was central to the plot as both Emily and Rose laid bare their lives and related their stories. Social media was an essential part of their interactions with other characters and used to great effect. All the main characters were well developed with an intense complexity. They are flawed but hiding behind perfection and this created a sickening tension that was difficult to shake off as the narrative headed towards its shocking conclusion. I adored Claire Allens writing style as she slowly unwrapped the facts about Rose and her life and although I got a little frustrated with Emily’s attitude, she grew on me as her character was further explored. And I thought the ending brought all the twisty and unnerving threads to the perfect conclusion.
This can be an uneasy read at times due to the subject matter but it’s just so wonderfully engrossing and addictive. I was very emotional by the time I had devoured it and it is definitely a book that will keep you thinking about it long after you’ve finished it.
