This is pretty much a nearly exact re-telling of Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" film, which I watched and really enjoyed when it was released in 2009. This is such a cute story with very likable characters, and this book is full of black and white illustrations. I personally would have enjoyed this book more as a novelization of this story with fewer illustrations. That said, as an adult, I am not the target audience for this book and would have loved it as a kid.
Thank you NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for sending me a digital copy of this book to honestly read and review.
The Disney manga version of The Princess and the Frog is a fun and quick read. I love the twist on a classic fairy tale that I loved as a child. It was really cool to the this story in a different format, but still lively and engaging for all ages.

What a great point to mention Tiana being a figure of action, motivating their own story, as said by Supervising animator Mark Henn.
This is a really cool book that gives insight behind the inspiration of the supervising animators.
Introduction of characters and locations…written comic book style.
This book can easily be acted out by friends…it’s almost script like. I had so much fun trading parts with my own daughter, since you get the words (as text bubbles) written almost like a script AND you get the expressions of that character…what fun!!!
I have to say, it wasn’t the type of book I was first expecting, but I really-really did enjoy this format!
I find that Nao Kodaka's Disney manga are some of my personal favorites. Her art is a perfect blend of Disney and her own manga style. It's been a few years since I last saw The Princess and the Frog, but this is definitely a great adaptation and truly makes me want to re-watch the movie, which in my mind, means it has done its job well! The Disney manga has done well in my library's juvenile graphic novels collection and this is definitely a great addition!
I received this book for Adobe Digital Edition viewing and found it hard to navigate and read. Putting that aside, it was not what I thought it would be and personally my daughters and I didn't really like it. The way the comic was set up was confusing and didn't flow. For that, I am giving it a 1 star.
It was really nice to revisit the Princess and The Frog! The story was shortened a bit but was otherwise accurate to the movie. I think the art was a little too close to the movie and it would've been nice if the art was more manga-like. All in all I liked it and I would definitely reread it.
Rating: 3.5 stars
Awesome novel with great graphics and drawings. It was a joy to read.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Diamond book/Tokyopop for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Well I learned that I apparently don't appreciate Manga. Sorry just not my thing. Maybe because it was a pet that I couldn't really read. It had Japanese characters in the background that overshadowed the artwork. I liked the artwork-gorveous, but found myself disappointed it wasn't in color. I date it a 3. I am sure there is a huge audience out there for this-unfortunately not for me.
As a huge disney fan, this book did not disappoint me at all. I thought that I would love this book and came out with the same thought. I really do love this book. Really want to read a bunch more of the books now.
My daughter and I love The Princess and the Frog. Tiana is one of our favorite Disney Princesses. I really enjoyed reading this manga. It followed the movie very closely. This would be a great addition to the library to engage reluctant readers. I would recommend.
This is a manga version of Disney's The Princess And The Frog and it follows the animated movie closely. We get some nice discussions from the animators that give a bit more depth to the story as well as some history, which was definitely a plus. As well, this is a superb adaptation from a Japanese illustrator, unlike many manga adaptions that are more manwha (Chinese) or manhua (Korean) based. But because this is a manga version, the entire story is in simple lines/black and white and sadly Tiana's deeper skin color has been whitewashed out. But that aside, this adaptation is well done and suitable for readers of even young ages.
Story: Tiana is a hard working young lady in New Orleans and best friends with the belle of society, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. When she is invited to a ball to celebrate a visit by the foreign Prince Naveen, she attends reluctantly. But Naveen has been tricked and turned into a frog; he comes to Tiana thinking she is a princess and can change him back. When that backfires, they will brave the swamps of New Orleans to find a way to revert the curse.
Interestingly enough, this volume stays truest to the original Disney animation and feels less 'manga' as a result (ironic, really, since the 'big eyes' of manga and anime were an homage to Disney cartoons in the first place). The art is clean and tells the story easily, with all the flair and panache as the source material. Character introductions in the beginning are nicely detailed with all kinds of extra information about the original animation and very welcome.
There are few additions here than in the original and really this is a retelling of the animation rather than a piece inspired on it. That means those who love the animation will get more of the same here - a fact some might find boring and others enticing. Because of the simplicity of design, this is a story that easily could be read to younger children or work as an early learning reader by lower elementary school students. Certainly, all the vim and verve of the Disney animation is in the book.
Other than the issue of white washing Tiana, it's a lovely book and a good read. The extras make it worth the purchase, though, for fans of the movie. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
I've only seen this movie once, a couple of years ago, but reading this manga made me remember how great it was and now I want to rewatch it! I loved the art style and though I had the idea some of the parts of the story were missing, it was very true to the movie!
Manga meets Disney may seem a strange combination to some but is one that works once you get your head around how they read. As an almost complete retelling of the Disney film, this is almost a junior novelization of the film version except in graphic novel/manga version. Lacking in colour and detail in it's illustrations the simplicity would serve this as a good introductory novel for youngsters. Tiana and New Orleans always make for a relaxing bedtime read.
This a beautiful rendition of The Princess and the Frog, that very closely follows the movie. The style wasn't very manga like, but was still delightful.
Thank you to Netgalley, Nao Kodaka and Diamond Book Distributors for providing an eARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Disney Manga: The Princess and the Frog is a fun-filled recipe for adventure with a dash of romance. After being placed under a spell, Prince Naveen learns that there is no easy way out when he mistakenly kisses a waitress instead of a princess. This story stays true to the Disney film and does not disappoint. Recommended for fans of Disney, manga and The Princess and the Frog.
I enjoyed the story and characters from Disney. The graphics were wonderful too, of course. I expect the best from Disney and this does not disappoint..
So for one, I am really happy that this is a manga. I am so excited. But I am disappointed in the lack of skin color. Everyone is white. Like just paper white that all. There is no diversity. The only thing colored is hair and eyebrows. I have seen a manga with dark skin characters they could have done that with this. But that was my only issue. The manga sticks to the story from the Disney movie and adds some insight which I really enjoyed. The manga though was short but covered everything from the movie. It was just as sweet and cute as the movie was. I hope many enjoy it!
My 7 year old daughter and I picked this for our reading time. We love The Princess and The Frog movie and this book was no different. The format was set up more like a comic book than an actual book but we enjoyed it still. If you like the movie, you'll like the book. It's a must read for Tiana fans and Disney lovers. Tiana is still hardworking and has her sense of humor and then you have Naveen who is willing to learn how to cook. We love these two together! We both enjoyed reading it and will most definitely tell our friends/family about the book.
What’s hopping in New Orleans? What’s cooking with Tiana and Naveen?
The Shadow Man’s curse has Tiana and Naveen a little green and totally amphibian. The prince and the waitress must break the curse by midnight on Mardi Gras or stay frogs forever. Can they find a princess to kiss Naveen in time?
For anyone of any age that loves fairy tales, new spins on fairy tales, or Disney comics and manga, this is a treat. You’ve got a feisty heroine and a hero who’s willing to learn to cook. What else do you need? It’s a recipe for mayhem and a little romance, Disney style!
In addition to the story, there’s a really neat info section introducing the main characters with notes about their character, their background, and insights from and about the supervising animator. There’s also a section of manga lover sketches that could be used for coloring or for learning to draw the characters. There are also sneak peeks at other Disney manga titles.
Remember to follow the panels and conversation bubbles from right to left. There’s a handy reference that shows you the flow in numbers, so you won’t get lost. (Trying to read left to right will get your brain in a knot and make for some really weird conversations!)
ARC COPY...although it doesn't capture the slap stick nature of the original movie. Still was acute and energetic read. Decent adaptation.
