I really enjoyed this first book in a new series. I enjoyed meeting some of the other characters that will be in later books as well. Overall, this was a great start!
Beckett King is an orphan. His mom died when he was a kid. He and his dad weren't close, but his dad was still there. Until he wasn't. Now Beckett has to run the family company, and keep things afloat, while his dad's enemies come at him from all sides. He isn't sure who he can trust, but he knows he CAN'T trust his estranged family. But, he might be able to trust the woman who's always been honest with him, even while they were competing in business time and time again, Samara. He needs help, and he thinks she can give it. But will she be willing?
Samara Mallick is the right hand of her boss, and in direct competition with Beckett King's business. But, that hasn't stopped the attraction they feel for each other. Samara wants to hate Beckett every time he beats her out for a contract, or shows his arrogant side. But, really she respects the way he does business, especially in the ways he's different from his father. The fact that he's a beautiful man doesn't help her cause either. When Beckett needs her help, she's not sure she should give it. But, ultimately, she goes with her gut, in life and in business, and she can't turn him down.
Beckett and Samara's chemistry was on fire from the very beginning. Their interactions were always hot, and even when they were only partially satisfying, they were hotter for each other than ever. I loved watching them work their way through all the people and things keeping them apart, and ultimately decide what was right for them, regardless of outside influences. The side characters here were quite intriguing as well. Beckett's cousin, and Samara's best friend, Journey, is a very interesting woman, and Beckett's best friend Frank is quite the enigma as well. Their book is next, and I cannot wait to learn more about each of them. I'm also very interested in Journey's oldest brother, and how he'll deal with everything that happened, going forward.
I'm so into this family, and their insane issues. I am here for it. I want them to all learn to be family to each other when they haven't been in so long. I'm hoping that will happen going forward. I loved Beckett and Samara's story and I really hope we get more peeks at them throughout the series to come. I can already tell that Journey's story will cause all the FEELS and I'm so looking forward to it. I can't believe it won't be until 2019! Can't wait.
The Last King was an intriguing and good solid romance. I really liked Samara and Beckett. Enjoyed start to finish. Good story that kept me reading
Let me start by saying I liked both the hero and heroine in this story. Beckett was sexy, commanding and driven although damaged from his childhood and an unloving parent. Samara was ambitious and beautiful with a kindness that was surprising. They are both rivals or as Samara kept having to remind herself, enemies, working for different companies often competing for contracts. They have faced off each other frequently in the boardroom and have an enormous mutual attraction that they shouldn't succumb to because, ya know, enemies! Even so, their interactions while often tense are not unpleasant. There's a lot of mutual respect and grudging trust going on. What I didn't like was the unpleasantness around the family intrigue and the enmity between Beckett's aunt and his side of the family. Perhaps her hate is justifiable because she was badly treated by her father but the feud in the family has carried on for years and grown over that time. There's an entire very negative subplot going on with Beckett's aunt and the mystery surrounding the death of Beckett's father and the final changes to his will at a very late stage. I found I didn't have the patience to wade through all the animosity and negativity that was going to pepper the entire plot of the story with Beckett's aunt pitting Samara against Beckett to undermine him, while they fight their attraction to one another. My patience ran thin after giving the book about 25% but even the discovery of more intrigue and accusations didn't keep me engaged but in fact pushed me away from the story. I like Ms Robert's writing but this story itself wasn't for me.
I have enjoyed all of the series I've read so far by Katee Robert, and I know this one is going to be up there with the best of them. Samara and Beckett are on opposite sides of a war but are still attracted to each other. They worked through their attraction and then at the problems that start happening so well, even through the doubts. It was exactly a mystery, but I enjoyed how we were weaved through the destruction of the King family and seeing the person at fault get what they deserved, though I have a feeling we'll see her again in the future.
Filthy rich family drama—tuned up several notches—lies at the heart of ‘The Last King’ as children pay for the bad blood that started decades before their time and work painfully through schisms because of one woman’s longstanding, poisonous resentment left to fester.
It isn’t often that I read such books (the constant bitching and underhanded manoeuvring can get headache-inducing), but Katee Robert’s writing is compelling enough to give stories like this a shot. As I suspected, it is easy to get engrossed in the tale of bad blood, bitchy office politics and corporate espionage that sort of runs the boundary into the murderous, though it feels a little like an oncoming train wreck I can’t take my eyes off.
Vile aunt vs. struggling nephew, the former of whom gets her comeuppance and the latter of whom finally gets what he deserves? How sweet the sound. But unlike the kind of fairy-tale where the prince and princess ride off blissfully into their HEA oblivious to the smoking ruins around them, built into this first establishing story of the series is also a very difficult generation transition with several burn marks to pay for getting rid of a vile villain you’d love to hate, and a rival-to-lovers tale that thankfully, doesn’t involve too many TSTL moments.
Robert does write Beckett King as a protagonist I could sympathise with, and Samara Mallick as a worthy other half for him. Apart from their chemistry scorching the sheets, I didn’t have problems seeing both of them as equals both in and out of bed and I actually liked how Robert wrote Samara’s eventual shift in loyalty towards Beckett instead of blindly following his vile aunt the whole way.
In fact, I expected to be exhausted by the end of ‘The Last King’. Instead, I was drawn in—admittedly a little slowly and reluctantly at first—, surprised at how Beckett and Samara stole the show for me, as did Robert’s secondary characters, making me anxious to get onto the other Kings’ stories, though a long, long wait is in order.
The Last King is proof why you can’t always give up on an author. While I tried to read Katee Roberts before and it ended with a DNF, this one was fantastic! I loved the romance and the thriller involved in it. Beckett and Samara had the greatest push/pull relationship. When they let their guard down with one another the sparks really flew and the chemistry was off the charts. They were smart in understanding what a relationship between them would look like, but they were also unable to stay away from one another. And the thriller aspect was just enough to not feel over the top even with a few of the twists that happened. The end felt a tad off and rushed, but other than that everything about this wooed me. I can’t wait for book 2!
Beckett and Samara work at rival companies created by his family's dysfunction. Even though they know it's not a good idea they get involved and their chemistry is off the charts. When everything takes a dangerous turn they have to decide if they are loyal to their companies or each other. Enjoyable romance.
If you're a fan of hot, steamy romance novels with alpha males and strong women this one's for you. The Last King (The Kings #1) has it all, interesting story line, great characters with loads of chemistry, family drama and a bit of mystery thrown in. This is only the second Katee Robert book I've read but I'm already a huge fan and eagerly awaiting the next installment in the King Family series.
