The illustrations are delightful, and though this book is clearly meant for older reader, i'm not sure where exactly it would fit in the library.

The book had beautiful illustrations, but I don't think young students would love the story. First, the title suggests that Little Bear himself takes a stand. When I read a book to a class, I ask them to make predictions based on the cover. They would expect Little Bear to be the one leading the crusade against the humans doing harm in his environment. In reality, he's more just a participant with the other animals taking the stand and coming up with ideas. Also, there are too many words per page. I think it could have been told more concisely, as the illustrations carry much of the story.

"Where there used to be lots of food, now there are hardly any fish left. But Lars and his friends know just what needs to be done. In helping to put things right, Lars proves just what a brave little hero he is."

Or saboteur, you mean. Yes, this environmentally-minded book is supposed to warn youngsters about global warming and to make them think about the rights of the animals in the environments we're wrecking, but like as not will create a further generation of eco-warrior snowflakes, with no idea of the right way to go about things. It reads fine, it looks wonderful, but the message is very, very poor indeed.

This is not a story for the very young as the text is too long, but for primary students and older, this book has a great message. When the fish disappear from the bay, Lars, the little polar bear and his friends decide to do something about it. They are successful and the fish return. It sounds like a simple message but this book could be used for many things. When looking at the problems with global warming and changes to habitat this would be a great book to read. When talking about what we can do to save the world, this book shows that when we work together we can make a difference. It also shows that one person (or animal in this case) can have an idea that can solve a problem. I loved the illustrations. They look like watercolour or pencil crayon pictures that add a softness to the story that really has a serious message. A great book for a school or classroom library.

The story can be read as a great introduction into the issue of global warming and its risks for small children, but also offers a solution, meaning that every individual matters when it comes to creating change while staying together with like-minded people. The message is not obvious enough to alter the literary character of the book for the ideological reasons though. It is an enjoyable, well told story with lovable brave characters. The illustrations are also a great addition to the book.

Comments from collectors of "Little Polar Bear" books--and why we won't be purchasing this one. The message of the story is clear-the evils of global warming and climate change--and the dangers of humans at the North Pole. Little Bear and friends literally wreak havoc, serving as animal terrorists by destroying a radio station and buoy. Despite the cute factor, (we really did love the illustrations) this is not a book we want to expose to children.

What a gorgeous little story! Absolutely wonderful illustrations and I cannot wait to share this book with my class of little ones! The book has such a great message about looking after the world around us and how we should fight for what is right.
