This is a must have for all the cross stitch lovers out there, especially if you like retro designs! I liked how easy the instructions were and how cute the book looked. Flowers are always a favourite of mine so I was happy to see so many flower designs. This would be a lovely contribution to your cross stitch book collection.
Super sweet little book. It's awesome to pay homage to the older forms of this craft (which will only make people more interested in the modern takes that are happening). Good for school or public libraries.
lovely patterns. So many beautiful flowers. Easy to follow instructions with lovely vintage patterns. I especially loved the coffee and tea section.
Absolutely beautiful designs -- retro without feeling dated. This book would make a fine addition to the craft section of any library, as it has some of the most appealing patterns I've seen in recent years. Bravo!

A colorful and beautiful 101 course of cross-stitch. The catalog contains a large number of vintage to give a chic touch to any project.
Retro Cross Stitch Véronique Enginger is a beautiful collection of 500 charts for motifs with a French retro flair to cross stitch. The designs are varied and include many smaller designs as well as some larger pieces. Scattered throughout are finished examples stitched onto various articles like linens, bags, framed pictures and labels/cards.
A Touch of Nostalgia, Chocolate, Tea, Coffee, Fabulous Journeys, and Fashion. Most of the designs are small, which are perfect for crafters to use in a myriad of ways. With color stitching charts and DMC floss numbers provided, the patterns are easy for even a beginner to be able to follow.
The book has page after page filled with individual patterns grouped together by common subject. The trend towards lazy days during the 1800, parasols and high button boots, tea service and time at the boardwalk or the beach are beautifully imagined. The sections are A Touch of Nostalgia, Chocolate, Tea, Coffee, Fabulous Journeys, and Fashion. Most of the designs are small, which are perfect for crafters to use in a myriad of ways. With color stitching charts and DMC floss numbers provided, the patterns are easy for even a beginner to be able to follow.
I received this ARC from Schiffer Publishing Ltd. via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This cross stitch book contains many patterns that are vintage, or retro. They are easy to read and follow along. Some of the patterns are quite easy, perfect for the beginner. There are alphabets, and patterns good for samplers. Especially the ones with the French styling. Of course, the coffee and tea patterns are my favorite and I hope to use them myself. For all of us who love cross stitching or crafts, this is the book for you!
I love every single pattern in this book. The patterns are more vintage than retro, makes them right in my wheelhouse. They are super colorful and very easy to use. There are also lots of teapots. I adore teapots! In the above picture, the teapot pattern I am working on is very similar to the teapot I own.
I ordered a hard copy of this book today. I would rather hold the book. Easier to stitch from than a piece of paper which gets bent and faded.
This book is great for any cross stitcher.
I received this book from Netgalley for a honest review.
When I get a new cross stitch pattern, book or magazine generally I'm super excited for at least one section of it. Especially when it's a book with lots of motifs or project options. Cross stitch is my number 1 crafting passion!
Unfortunately when I opened up Retro Cross Stitch I felt really let down. The motifs in this book might be a bit unique (like the typewriter ones) but the reality is that they are no different than what you can find in the average cross stitch magazine that specializes in smaller motifs. With no actual large projects or designs, no sampler usage examples for the motifs and little to no truly unique items I was let down. Maybe if you have a specific thought in mind for corsets, typewriters or flowers you would find this book's patterns useful. But for me they fell a bit flat.

The biggest let down for me was to discover that this was not retro at all! In fact it's vintage. Now you might be thinking, what's the big deal? Or what's the difference? Retro tends to be bold 60's, 70's and 80's patterns and trends. Vintage is back to the late 1800's - early 1900's when corsets were king, women couldn't walk around alone and having a job or voting were definitely not in the cards for us ladies. Quite a difference in my mind.
While I love vintage more than retro (usually); in this case I felt Retro Cross Stitch missed the mark whether it was truly retro or vintage. Some cute towels, babies bibs, or other kitschy items might be inspired from this book but otherwise it's likely to collect dust on your shelf; or at least on mine.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Net Galley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
Schiffer Publishing and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Retro Cross Stitch: 500 Patterns, French Charm for Your Stitchwork. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Retro Cross Stitch is a book full of vintage designs, with sections such as A Touch of Nostalgia, Chocolate, Tea, Coffee, Fabulous Journeys, and Fashion. Most of the designs are small, which are perfect for crafters to use in a myriad of ways. With color stitching charts and DMC floss numbers provided, the patterns are easy for even a beginner to be able to follow.
The problem with the book is that most of the designs do not show the finished look, only the color charts. It is difficult to get a clear picture of how the patterns will look when they are completed, making it harder for readers. Cross stitching is a visual art and not having photos of the stitched items is a negative. I personally use the photos of the finished project when I am working, as charts sometimes can seem muddled and confusing when the design is complicated. Many of the designs are cute and fun, which can be a great way for newcomers to the art to get their feet wet. As the author is very prolific, I am interesting in seeing what other types of design books are offered. Readers who enjoy the look of retro patterns may find this cross stitch book to their liking.
I really enjoyed looking at all the patterns in this book and seeing where I might be able to sew them, whether it be pilllow case or hand towel. I have many ideas running around my head for future ideas too. If you enjoy cross stitching, I believe you would enjoy looking at and sewing these retro pieces.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book provided by NetGalley.
This lovely book full of french art, flowers and all thing retro, is a great book for anyone who loves retro french and would make beautiful work for your home. Easy to follow patterns. Recreate designs from 1800s and 1900s fashion houses and milliners’. Designs that can be used on their own or you could compile them together to make a scene.
The author has a real knack for creating adorable vinatage’y patterns. In this particular book that means things like an Art Nouveau alphabet sampler (I’ve never been a friend of alphabet samplers, but the letters are super useful anyway). There are many floral themed more traditional pieces but there are also patterns like old cars, a jazz band, flappers, artists, planes, tributes to old school scientists, toys, teapots, coffeepots, foods, and more. One of my favorite sections of this book focusses on Women’s clothing and accessories.
In all reality, these patterns are beautiful, but just not for me. I would never make them. First off they are just little cross stitch patterns batched into themes. Very few full wall hanging type of patterns. However, I know this book would get checked out from the library by both novice and expert cross stitchers.
I love Cross stitch and I love things that have an old fashion feel to them. This book combines both those loves in one., My favorite patterns are the botanicals, but there are also people, travel, objects, clothing, places and cultures.. All the patterns are lovely, and the pictures are of very high quality. . For a really new cross stitchers, keep in mind that patterns do not include instructions, so one would have to be familiar with the technique of cross stitch to use, but it does have different levels of difficulty from easy to more difficult so can be used as one grows in the art and I highly recommend for everyone!
I am considering a hard copy of this book because I see it being well used and even being passed down to my daughters.
Overall a very handy cross stitch reference book, with many many small patterns if you are looking to add a little cross stitch here and there. Not really a book with a lot of background details, nor a lot of large scale patterns to work on. Wish there would have been a bit more images of completed designs, to give inspiration more, but sometimes it is nice to allow personal creativity to flow as well. Would recommend this book.
Nothing like getting two different books (by the same author) to revive a love of a craft you haven’t bothered with in years.

If I had to choose between the two books I was given to review, I’d pick the author’s Fables book. This one is just as gorgeous. I just have a love of fairy tales. But there are really no bad patterns in this book.
Love these patterns! Unlike other cross stitch books I've looked at, every pattern is wonderful.
This beautiful book by Véronique Enginger will delight fans of vintage advertising posters, french motifs and antique fashion designs. I was particularly taken by the trunk labels, and the tango dancers, and look forward to several cross-stitch projects to decorate project bags as sampled in “Retro Cross Stitch”.
Retro Cross Stitch by Véronique Enginger is a big and beautiful collection of 500 charts for motifs with a French retro flair to cross stitch. The designs are varied and include many smaller designs as well as some larger pieces. Scattered throughout are finished examples stitched onto various articles like linens, bags, framed pictures and labels/cards.
There are multiple themes included in the collection, broadly gathered into the chapters:
A Touch of Nostalgia
Chocolate, Tea, Coffee
Fabulous Journeys
Fashion
The entire collection runs to 192 pages, hardbound. There are multiple motifs per page and the charts have both symbol and color, making them very easy to follow.
The botanicals (example pictured on the cover) are really appealing and classy and would make wonderful hostess gifts stitched onto a wine bottle cover or napkin set.
While there are pictured examples of finished projects throughout the book, neither patterns nor instructions are included, they're just guides for further inspiration.
The photography, as always, is clear and high quality.
Five stars
