My Review: I have been wanting to give on of the Little Tails issues a try after they attracted my attention a year or so ago, so when this one came available on Netgalley I jumped at the opportunity. I love that there are more and more graphic novels and comics being made available to younger reading audiences, it is a great way to bridge the gap from illustrated picture books to novels and chapter books. Graphic Novels are also a great way to help young readers who may not be as interested in the activity to focus on a book. With that said, I don't think I have ever seen one done quite the way that Little Tails is done. It combines the classic comic cartoon strip with beautiful and artistic illustration. On each page is a short comic featuring the characters Chipper and Squizzo in simple cartoon pencil style and then the scene or animal on the farm they are discussing fills the remainder of the page in a beautiful artistic and realistic style. It really took me a bit to wrap my head around it but the funny adventure that the pair were on drew me in, along with the use of facts throughout the story. I don't know how well young readers will be able to make the connection between the comic and the images but it is certainly a unique book to share.
My Rating: This was an unusually formatted book, even for a graphic novel. I am not sure how that will translate for everyone but I found it unique and I love that it is written for children but enjoyable for all. I give it a rating of Three Paws.
The main characters are in need of some milk. They decide to go to the farm to ask around to see if anyone has some. They meet and interact with different animals on the farm.
Adorable illustration. Easy to read font.
Easy to follow and help kids learn how to read a graphic novel.
At the end there is information about the animals that they visited through the book. On Netgalley their information says they will also have lesson plans that can go with this. But this can go with any lesson plan that has anything to do with farms.
I’ll start off by saying me and my family own and have read the others countless times. The five year old absolutely loves chipper and squizzo’s Adventures together and the cool facts he learns from the story. The artwork I sent always stunning and very readable.
The farm story was quite cute, typical Squizzo and Chipper fashion a mission or idea on hand they take the reader on the adventure with them where they can learn something new or freshen a thought up on a new take on a thought. We always love the banter between the two, the sound effects are quite fun to immate, and the comic and artwork combined utterly cute. He always loves the jokes, and I always love that the educational background helps him learn more about stuff so it’s a win win.
Thanks for taking the time to make reading fun for all ages and can’t wait for more!
What a super cute farm book! This book did a great job visually enhancing and teaching about different kinds of animals! It is a cute series that I would highly recommend to parents and teachers of preschool and kindergarten age children.
I loved the dog Chipper and his buddy the Sqizzo the squirrel! They were on a quest to find milk and interacted with loads of cute farm animals! The detailed features of the animals in the back of the story was fun and educational as well! I thought the illustrations were well thought out and beautifully crafted to go along with the story!
This book and its series are a great way to introduce younger kids to graphic novels and engage reluctant readers. To me it's what happens when a comic book meets a picture book. The stars of the book, Squizzo the squirrel and Chipper the puppy, are very relatable for younger ones. The artwork below the cartoon strips brings what Squizzo and Chipper are encountering to life. They are realistic and beautifully done. At the end of the story you will find the animal drawings with educational and very interesting information about each one.
This was a cute little farm book I came across on Netgalley. It is part of a series, and I hope to get the other books soon.
Little Tails on the Farm follows Chipper (a dog), and his pal Squizzo (a squirrel), in search for fresh milk. In their journey, we meet many different animals that may live on a farm. I LOVED the graphics of book, and enjoyed the bit of information at the end of the book, about the different farm animals you encounter.
This is a great graphic book to read to your young ones to learn about life on a farm, whether you live life on a farm or not. It's adorable.
This was yet another winner from a talented team. Beautifully drawn and colored (except maybe for the chickens and the large feet on the two girls!) by Bertolucci, and amusingly written by Brrémaud, this is another story of Chipper and Squizzo, this time on their quest to find milk. Of course the farm is the place to go - when you say grace at mealtimes, don't thank a god who didn't do squat to put food on your table, thank the farmers.
The story consists of parallel parts: a running cartoon strip consisting of cute, sketchy line drawings in which Squizzo the squirrel and Chipper the dog plan how to get milk, and then below these a gorgeously colored...well, painting is the best word to describe it, of life on the farm, related to what has just been discussed by the intrepid pair. In their quest, they meet pretty much every type of common farm animal, and eventually they get their milk from an unexpected source. Which seems to have improbably large feet, but some people do, I guess!
I've followed this pair for some time and I am a fan of their work. I think this is perhaps the best one they've done. It was, as I said, highly amusing to see the interactions and comments between these two characters, and I'm envious of Bertolucci's talent with pen and brush. Like I said, the chickens struck me as a bit odd, but maybe that's just me. The thing is that on the very next page was a rooster which was awesome in its ferociousness. Don't ever mess with roosters, especially not this one! The illustrations simply flowed and were so well done.
It was a pleasure to read this and I recommend it highly.
I like this series of Little Tails. It is a great way to introduce children to the animals found on a farm, well come farms. This sort of idyllic farm only exists in picture books, these days. Most farms are large industrial complexes, as those smaller ones would not have a plow horse and a tractor. Two sheep? Two cows? Two donkeys? It is an odd farm.
But, be that as it may, this is a great way to show all the possible animals that would make up a farm, from bees, to pigs to cows to peacocks. And our friends, the Puppy and Squirrel, ask questions, and explore along the way.
And in the end, we get some factoids about the animals that the two have visited. The illustrations are gorgeous.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
I really enjoy these little tales book. They are a mix of picture book and graphic novel. Plus at the end you get infobits about the various animals on the farm. This book manages to make the ordinary extraordinary. It has sass, it has heart, and it has my love.
Adorable book that is beautifully illustrated! I think children will enjoy the search for milk around the farm!
A squirrel and dog are hungry so they venture out on the farm to look for milk. They meet many of the inhabitants of the farm on their tricky quest.
This is advertised as an easy reader, and it is told in fairly simple language though there are lots of contractions and the names of some animals can be harder…think level 1 or 2 depending on the series, but definitely not pre-reader. Kids get introduced to a wide variety of animals that can make their home on a farm. The story is told with two layers of illustrations. The interactions between the squirrel and dog take place in black and white panels at the top like a traditional comic, while the bottom half of the page shows a related scene from nearby on the farm in full, vibrant color and more life-like illustrations. (Actually the color illustrations reminded me a lot of classic vintage Little Golden Book illustrations but with brighter colors.) It’s a unique combo of illustration styles but I liked it. It will help beginning readers understand how to read comics and graphic novels, and most importantly, I think kids will really enjoy it. It looks like other books in this series introduces animals in other locals, like the ocean. I’ll definitely be recommending this to our elementary library and looking for the others. I think the kids would love this book.
Beautiful illustrations below a comic-strip style story. The main characters, a cat and squirrel, lead a search over the neighboring farm looking for milk. Along the way the meet various farm animals such as a rooster, a duck, a horse and a peacock. The end of the book includes an educational section that teaches little minds fun facts about the different animals in the book. This is a fun, beautiful book that youngsters are sure to love.
*thank you to Netgalley and Diamond Book Distributors for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*
4 stars.
Oh my god the artwork in this book is incredible! This alone is enough of a reason to grab this treasure. I have not read any of the other books in the series but if they are like this one then they are also worth checking out.
This story is about a puppy and a baby squirrel go around the farm in search for some milk. They meet all the animals on the farm trying to find out which animal can give them milk to drink. I love how this is also a mix of part graphic novel and part picture book. I haven't seen books done this way before but I really liked it, plus I think it makes it more appealing to a larger range of kids (and adults too). Definitely recommend.
Engaging, humorous, educational book about farm animals. Black-and-white cartoon panels with the dialog appear over excellently-drawn, color illustrations of farm animals. Squirrel and Cat are on a quest for milk, which takes them through the farm. Along the way, we learn about all the animals and what they do (even peacocks)--pigs, goats, cows, horses, and more. Fun!
