A little bit strange, this one, but I really enjoyed it and will definitely read more in the series as they are released.
It starts off by throwing you straight into the action and you soon pick up its a fast placed action sci fi with lots of technical terms and banter between the two main characters, who are brothers. We also have a parallel story going on down on earth with a bunch of teenage friends and their family history.

There are things I liked, and things I didn't like. It took me a while to get used to the style of the speech. Instead of "he should have realised..." or "I wanted to say..." it would usually be "Should have realised..." or "Wanted to say..." for example. So often that I found it a little jarring. At first I thought it was how the brothers talked but then realised the teenagers on earth spoke the same. There's also a lot of speech that just sounds a little unnatural, but there's also a few sections where the brothers talk about slang and word usage and so I felt like it was intentional. It did make it a little harder to understand at times, though. Despite that, there were a few times I found myself grinning at the bickering between brothers or the teenager friends - both sets of people bicker a lot. It got perhaps a little repetitive in some cases, but was fun overall.

Its one of those first in a series books that leaves you wanting more, but also doesn't have a satisfying ending of its own. Questions are not answered! And there's plenty of them. I'm not sure I completely understand everything that was going on. Family history secrets are never explained, and there's a political conflict involving the brothers that lost me a little because I vaguely lost track of which commander whose name starts with v was which.

On the other hand, I liked the brothers and their major, and some of the supporting characters around them (the bosses second in command, the enforcer, the doctor) and sort of visualised the brothers from the TV series Killjoys. The group of teens took a bit more warming to as I didn't find them that easy to tell apart, apart from one that everyone was exasperated with because he was annoying. I didn't know who was in on what and who knew secrets the others didn't.

Despite my criticism, the action sequences were brilliant and easy to visualise, and I'm curious enough to want to find out what happens next - and hope that some questions are answered!
