Well-written and helpful guide to an exciting craft. So happy to see this art resurface! This book is appropriate for school and public libraries.
I have been trying to learn how to macrame for ages, and I think this book is the closest I've come to feeling as if I there's hope for me yet. It is truly all-inclusive, complete with all the basic terminology and a guide on different materials you can use. It even discusses different ways you can "accessorize" the items you make with macrame (such as exactly which plant will look best in that plant hanger you made). I feel like Katz has thought of everything and she's gone out of her way to show us all how worthwhile macrame is. It really inspires me.
That said, the book also overwhelms me a bit. For someone who is a true beginner, I didn't feel like I was ready to even think about most of these projects. Although Katz begins with plant hangers and wall art, we're almost immediately jumping into chapters on large, professional-looking projects like rugs and furniture (yes, furniture!). I love the book and I love looking at all the photos, even though I feel a little intimidated by them. I may never make most of these things, but I'm still find the book inspiring and am glad to have it. I will definitely hold onto it...if I ever macrame anything decent, it will likely come from this book.
An all-inclusive macrame guide!
Thanks to NetGalley and Ten Speed Press for the opportunity to read and review Modern Macrame by Emily Katz!
An informational and instructional guide to all things macrame. From the history of macrame to plant hangers to wall art, and more, can be found in this book of creativity. Photographs accompanying detailed instructions show tools and supplies needed, macrame knots and making macrame ropes and mounting. When I hear the word “macrame”, I think of the 1970’s plant hangers and bell bottom jeans, but the macrame creations in this book are streamlined and not just for hanging plants. The decorations and wall hangings are delicate and trendy. I especially love the swing! The daybed is fascinating and beautiful and the rugs are versatile. An all-inclusive macrame guide, 5 stars and happy creating!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. clear concise instruction mixed with visually beautiful pictures really captures the eye and holds the attention. I would recommend this book for crafty people who want to bring back a little vintage flair to their decor.
Growing up in house full of macrame in the 70's I had developed a strong aversion to the craft. Emily's book has given me a more modern insight into to current interpretation of the modern macrame trend. Part interior design and part instructional, this book is perfect for the home decorator, professional designer and artists.
Thanks to #netgalley for letting me review this book.

This is a wonderful book about macrame - plant hangers, curtains, even hammock and chairs. It introduces the art of making macrame knots to beginners and has interesting projects for advanced macrame "knotters" alike.
One of my first jobs was working as a craft maven at a summer camp. The craft Tsar was Zena (her real name) and she was an expert at macrame. She had patterns for everything. Growing up macrame was just for plant hangers, but she had hammocks, giraffes, owls, etc. You wanted it she could know it. And now that tradition lives on. What was thought as 70’s chic is now millennial modern. Yes plant hangers are back, and so are baskets and bags. This book is simply lovely. Organized in an easy to understand way, with lots of pictures explaining various knots and knot tying methods.
