Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
This book was on my TBR list for a long time, but I am so happy that I came back around to it!
It was just this side of odd that can turn a person off kilter, but in a good way. In truth, I wish there were more flashbacks to her experiences with the water before her wraith duties took hold. However, the imagery was still wonderful and a great element of the story!
I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. And so here it is:
The concept of necromancers was interesting and caught my attention immediately. I thought it would be a 5 star read and unfortunately I was disappointed. I didn't care much about the protagonist, Naya or even her love interest, Corton. I mean, the characters were....bland. There was no character development, which is an important aspect of any book.
The author kept describing things I didn't really care about and there wasn't anything worth admiring. But yes, the world she made was AMAZING. And her writing style was bedazzling too but there was no....SUBSTANCE. Y'all know what I mean, right? I couldn't bring myself to care about the characters or invest myself in them as much as I should.
Would I read the sequel? Maybe but I'm not very excited about it.
Anyways, I expected a lot from this book but I just couldn't love it.
This book has such an interesting premise! When Naya, daughter is a sea merchant, is murdered, a handsome necromancer brings her back from the dead as a wraith and a spy. I loved that the POV was from a character who’d come back to life. That part of the story feels fresh and unique.
The description sounded right up my alley, but I ended up DNF. Wanted to like it, but it just didn't draw me in.
DNF at 25%. It's been over five years since I received this ARC. I gave it a go and have decided it is not for me. It interested me then and no longer does now.
The beginning of the book was a little confusing but once I figured out what was going on, the book picked up pace quickly. The magic system introduced in Twice Dead has a unique twist from the "normal" presentation of necromancy. Along with runes carved into the body's bones, the soul must be sung back into the body, which is definitely something I've not encountered before in fantasy stories. There is a budding romance in the story--as is typical of YA novels--and well written. All the political intrigue and action had me turning pages until I reached the end. Overall, Twice Dead is a different spin on the spy novel and well worth a read from any fan of thrillers and fantasy alike.
I had really high hopes for Twice Dead and thought I would really love it. Unfortunately I DNF’d around halfway through. I couldn’t get into the storyline and the characters and predictable romance didn’t draw me in enough to make me want to keep reading.
The writing style was good, but the story was harder than I expected to get into. I really thought it would have been better. My expectations were too high with this one.
Hmm. This was an okay read for me, but one that has me decided that I don't really want to read another book in the series in the future.
I couldn't fully connect to most of the characters and when reading I just didn't really have that feeling of 'MUST pick up the book whenever I have a spare moment'. The necromancy element was what originally lured me, because it sounded super interesting to read about, but I think that overall the execution just wasn't what I really expected.
I think this book is definitely one to try out if it looks interesting to you, since reading is such a personal thing do to and everyone reacts/feels different when reading a book. For me it unfortuntaly wasn't addictive enough to want to continue the series in the future, but to you it may be a super awesome read!
I've tried at different times to get into this book, and it really has nothing to do with the writing... it's just not what I expected. I may have rushed into requesting this book because I like the cover. I'm sure those who like this kind of fantasy love the book, it just wasn't for me.
Archived before I could read it, so unfortunately I can’t leave a review. Thank you for the opportunity though.
I received this arc from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
"I felt like a lifeboat caught in a tempest, her ship already smashed by the waves."
I wanted to love this book for the beautiful haunting quotes like the one above but I just never felt truly engaged in the story. I felt like the pacing was completely off and moments I wanted drawn out were rushed but other moments/chapters were so drawn out. Drawn out to the point that I wanted to skim huge sections which I never ever do.
I felt like editing and pacing would have allowed this book to hit the next level. I would still be interested in what else the author writes because I feel like the talent is there.
Try as I might, this book just wasn't for me. I will recommend it to a few people who I think would be interested, but I was unable to finish.
Hola!
Saludos.
My cousin brought an excerpt of this book back from bookcon for me. I was definitely intrigued and excited for this book so I requested the full earc from Netgalley. The cover is gorgeous and the premise piqued my interest the most.
Unfortunately it didn’t live up to expectations and I was unable to finish the book. I didn’t feel a connection. The main character and the story seemed very formulaic as we are carried around through events that weren’t all that interesting or exciting.
This book just wasn’t for me. So I’m choosing not to rate it on goodreads or my social media.
I quite enjoyed this book, it was a bit predictable, but I didn’t mind that so much. Twice Dead had a lot of really cool elements - spies and necromancy for the win. This was easy to read, and very fast paced. Lots of twists and action packed.
Not for me. Read the first 20% or so and it felt like one big info dump. More tell than show, the story feels flat and I'm not connecting with the main character or that interested in continuing with the plot. So it's a DNF for me.
I really enjoyed reading this book! I read this book in one sitting because I could not put the book down, I highly recommend reading this book!
Twice Dead actually surprised me. I didn't think I would like it and so I went into the book with the idea of not enjoying it. I know that is definitely the wrong attitude to have. I definitely did not love this book but I enjoyed it enough not DNF it.
I really like the concept of the story, that people who have died can be brought back from the dead. But instead of being 'human', they become the undead or wraiths. It was interesting to see how these beings have to co-exist with humans, and I enjoy that there was tension between the two. This was a good setup for the story.
The world-building was fairly lacking at the start of the book. I felt shoved straight into the narrative before I could properly and appreciate the mysterious world. However, it did develop throughout the narrative; but it was just a bit too slow for my taste.
Unfortunately, I did not like the main character, Naya. She at times felt quite bland. At times she came across coldhearted and annoying. I would put it down to the fact that she was dead (which by the by she mentioned like a million times..) but she didn't even seem too upset at the start. Naya just goes with it after a few minutes of being shocked. I would have expected her to be more upset, to begin with, rather than the pointless repetition throughout.
I am still trying to understand the concept of Naya being a spy. Because it just really didn't feel that this was the case. I would have thought we would have spent some time with her training and then see her go on wild and crazy adventures. But this never happened. She had maybe, one or two missions? Most of the time she was scouting houses. Come on, that is so boring. This was the real disappointment for me. Worst spy ever.
The romance was quite obvious from the start but didn't properly form till the end, which I liked. I would say that romance was a 'slow-burn' but thankfully it was not 'insta-love'!
Though its faults, I am still intrigued to pick up the sequel and see if we get to know more about Naya and watch her develop into more of an interesting and adventurous character. 3.5 stars out of 5 from me!
Good day! Before anything else, I would like to extend my deepest, sincerest gratitude for sending me a digital review copy of this book (via NetGalley). Thank you very much for the opportunity!
Unfortunately, I am sad to say that I have lost interest in this particular title, and consequently, I have decided against finishing it. Forcing myself to finish a book I am disinterested in (solely for the sake of finishing it) can only negatively impact the entirety of my reading experience, which, in turn, could result in me writing an unfairly negative review. That is a circumstance I hope to avoid. With that said, I believe that the best course of action is for me to simply not read it and to refrain from publicly posting any feedback regarding this book.
I hope you understand where I'm coming from. Again, thank you for the lovely opportunity!
