Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked how the author started the book out and went backward to tell the story. The plot kept me guessing and the twists were great. I really enjoy Lisa Scottoline's books and this one did not disappoint.
I liked the beginning and middle better than the end. I thought that the ending downplayed the suspense that was present in the rest of the book. I enjoyed it overall though.
I have read several books by this author and she consistently provides compelling,page-turning stories. This one was dark and twisty with a courtroom trial and some surprises.
This book is typical Lisa Scottoline, as it held me captive even after I finished it!
Anna is the daughter that Maggie lost custody of as a baby that recently entered her life again. Maggie is now married to Noah, whom Anna accuses of molesting her. Right after this accusation, Anna is dead and the plot really picks up! I highly recommend this!
Thank you to Netgalley, Lisa Scottoline and the publisher for an advance copy to review.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley. Great book with lots of twists and turns. Just when you think you have figured it out another possibility comes up. Couldn't put this book down. The characters were easy to identify with, making the book that much more addictive. Highly recommend! Another great book by Lisa Scottoline! This is a must read!
I am a huge fan of Lisa Scottoline so I was super excited to see After Anna on Netgalley! Her writing and storylines are always spot on and After Anna follows suit!
After Anna was amazing! I was unable to put it down until the very last word. I loved how effortlessly Lisa jumped from Maggie ( Anna's mother) and Noah whom is Anna's step father who is being charged for Anna's murder!!!! Right?!?! That storyline is amazing!
After Anna is a must read and will be amazing addition to your beach bag this summer!!
I am a fan of Lisa Scottoline's books, so I was excited to see that she had written another one, After Anna. Once again she managed to write an engrossing story with numerous twists and turns. Maggie, Noah and his son Caleb live a pretty normal and good life. Maggie's one regret is that she lost custody of her daughter Anna at a very young age and even though she attempts to keep in touch with Anna through letters, Anna has never contacted her. A phone call from Anna changes that and Maggie is thrilled when Anna asks her if she can move in. But the face Anna presents to Maggie is quite different from the one she shows Noah and things go horribly wrong, quickly.
Chapters alternate between Maggie and Noah, Before Anna and After Anna. I didn't see the final twist coming and even though I thought the ending was rushed, the story overall was fast paced and held my attention. The book description was detailed and I think adding any more plot points might give away too much.
Thank you Lisa Scottoline, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the digital ARC to read and review. If you enjoy murder, mystery, intrigue and courtroom drama, you might enjoy reading After Anna.
Wow! What a fantastic page turner of a story! I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley. The opinions in this review are solely mine.
I absolutely LOVED this book. It is the first book by Lisa Scottoline that I have read and it most definitely won’t be the last. The story was well written and switched between two time periods: before Anna and after Anna. The story flowed easily and was not hard to follow at all. The suspense factor was brilliantly executed leaving just enough mystery for me to not put the book down.
Pick this book as your next read and follow along as a family seems to be coming together, when it is actually being torn apart.
After Anna is a poignant story of betrayal and loss that will tug at your heartstrings relentlessly until the end.
This was a great story to read! It's Lisa Scottoline at her best, combining her author skills and her legal skills into one superb story!
I think I have read most of this author's stand alone books and, in my opinion, this is her best yet. It has a wonderful family story line; a new family Noah, Maggie and Noah's son. Into this new relationship comes Anna, Maggie's daughter who she has not seen or heard from since Anna was a baby. Let's just say that her presence brings chaos and disturbance to this family. Noah, who is a doctor, becomes the object of Anna's malicious scorn and the fireworks begin. And they don't stop until the end.
I loved this book and could not put it down! I highly recommend it to Scottoline's fans and new readers alike. You will be surprised by the ending.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and provide a review of this book.
Lisa Scottoline has a knack for writing engrossing thrillers. 'After Anna' sounded intriguing, and it pulled me in from the first page. After that I just couldn't put it down.
Like in her other books, the characters in 'Anna' seem real and relatable. The book is well-plotted and fast-paced, with some twists (some I predicted and others I didn't), and a satisfying ending. There are some editing issues that caused some minor distraction from the story, but I'm sure will be fixed before it goes to print (e.g. if one parent remarries and has another child, that child is your half-brother, not your step-brother).
In all, a solid and enjoyable thriller. Would recommend.
While After Anna wasn't my new favorite Lisa Scottoline book, it, like the author's previous books, was so incredibly readable and engaging. Twisty and disturbing, Scottoline has created a tense story that travels back and forth through Noah's trial for the murder of his stepdaughter, Anna, and the small timeframe leading up to the murder between when Maggie, Anna's mother and Noah's wife, reconnected with Anna after a long, forced separation and brought her into their home. This is not the most unpredictable story, but one of those where putting together exactly how the pieces fit together is one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey. Character development is probably the weakest point of this story- I think there could have been more depth to both Noah and Maggie, and particularly to the development of their relationship- but this story will please plot-driven readers.
It's no secret I love ALL books by Lisa Scottoline and I was thrilled to get this book through the publisher and NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. This is my 10th book by Ms. Scottoline and she never disappoints. This grabbed me from page 1 with a strong start. And holy cow, what a FABULOUS book!! If you have not read any of her books, START WITH THIS ONE!!! It has you guessing till the end and I'm still thinking about it which makes for a GREAT book!! This might be my favorite book of 2018 to date!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Did not see that ending coming at all. From page one I had no idea where exactly the story was heading until the very end. I enjoyed this book. While not exactly a page-turner in the beginning, it certainly was at the end. Still in shock after reading this!
After Anna is an exciting novel which was difficult for me to put down. The point of view alternates between Anna's mother, Maggie, reunited with Anna after 17 years apart; and her stepfather, Noah, who is in court on charges of murdering Anna. As their stories converge, a mystery surrounding Anna unfolds into an intense, twisted climax.
I found the characters, settings and storyline to be well-developed, and the courtroom drama to be quite riveting. My only complaint would be some loose ends that went unaddressed.
A gripping tale in which hope blinds to lies and the faithful are cast off as unworthy. While some questions are left unanswered and the ending is a little short--how is the coping going, and how were issues dealt with?--it is an overall satisfying read.
Do you enjoy a good plot twist? Then the latest from Lisa Scottoline should be added to your list ASAP!
Dr. Noah Alderman, a widower and single father, is happily remarried to Maggie Ippolitti. Despite her longing for the daughter she hasn’t seen since she was a baby, Maggie is happy too, and she’s even more overjoyed when she unexpectedly gets another chance to be a mother to the child she thought she'd lost forever, her only daughter Anna. Maggie and Noah know that having Anna around will change their lives, but they would never have guessed that everything would go wrong, and so quickly.
Scottoline tells the story with a before and after look, an excellent way to tell it in my opinion. I don’t want to say much more because I don’t want to give anything away, but know that the before and after are going to converge into a powerful conclusion. Remember that plot twist I mentioned! WOW! It completely floored me and it wasn’t the only twist.
I found each character to be well written, but I didn’t care for Maggie’s character. I found her awkward, more teenager than adult. Anna is the best written character. I disliked her from the beginning because there was just something off about her, this underlying suspense to her character. The creepy factor is strong with this one.
After a steady pace throughout, when the revelations began (PLOT TWISTS!), they were coming at me at break neck speed and I barely managed to keep up. Even though all my burning questions were answered, I found the conclusion a tad rushed. Despite that, I was thrilled with Scottolines latest. It’s another great one. Grab your copy today!
Clear your agenda before you begin this one! You are in for a fantastic ride. Maggie is happily married to Noah and has a great ten-year old stepson. When she was much younger and previously married, she gave birth to a daughter, Anna. However, Maggie developed postpartum psychosis which caused her to relinquish custody of her daughter. Fast forward, seventeen years. Anna has contacted Maggie and wants to get to reconnect. Maggie rushes to Maine where Anna is at a boarding school. She meets Anna and they bond instantly. Florian, Anna's father and his new family have recently perished in a plane crash. Anna wants to come to PA to live with Maggie.
The novel is told in alternating viewpoints: Before Anna & After Anna. The ending is nothing you will ever see coming!
The book was written as before Anna came into the family and after Anna has been found murdered. This was a really compulsive read and I especially liked the twist. That being said, the last part of the book was a bit implausible and the ending rushed. I would recommend as it was a fast-paced, enjoyable read.
I liked this book, and I read it really fast because I was so intrigued - but I also had some issues with it. I like the alternating POVs as well as the before/after aspect. It keeps you guessing as to what happened but also builds up interest. The first 75% of the book was very good. Very good. Once we caught up with the "after trial" part, that's where the author went in a different direction - she definitely wanted to throw in some twists that you could not see coming. The ending was a bit rushed with Maggie's storyline. Noah's jail storyline seemed, blah, or just unnecessary. It was just there to build up more suspense but I think it was junk. Nonetheless, I think it's a good read and I would definitely read another of her book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The suspense kept drawing me back. I kept wanting to read one more chapter and finished it in one day.
The ending was rushed and I wish the wrap up had not been all told third-person. I would have preferred to experience that night from Anna's perspective. I also did not buy the motivation of the murderer.
However, those quibbles aside, I liked the book and writing style enough that I will seek out and buy other Lisa Scottoline books.
