This book is weird. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I will say it took me quite a while to really get into it. The base premise was intriguing, but I did not realize they were on another planet until like 3/4ths of the way through. I just thought it was incredibly far in the future in a dystopian kind of way. Court, Mykal, and Franny all live in a world where they know when they are going to die. It's not a maybe, it is definite. After they somehow avoid their death days they need to find a way to survive, which leads them to StarDust and a plan to travel in space to avoid the government finding out about them. What I found so interesting about this book was the level of detail on the culture. Each societal tier had their own language and mannerisms, which is often lacking in world building books. My major complaint is the end. I won't give away any spoilers but I invested so much time in these characters and now I feel like the story is really getting started. Overall, this book is definitely different and interesting, but I was disappointed at the pacing and I hoped for more insight into the main characters.

I feel like everything about the concept of this book was made for me! I mean it’s set in a planet where it’s always cold, it’s a science fiction set in another planet, it’s also a romance and the main characters have a connection, not to mention that I absolutely adore the two authors and the Addicted Series is one of my favourite contemporary romances. So really, I was absolutely thrilled when I managed to get my hands on an ARC of this book.

I will admit that one of the reasons why I didn’t keep my expectations too high for this book, was because I was scared that there might be a love triangle situation and I really dislike them, but joke was on me, because I just ended up shipping everything (but even if I hadn’t, it really isn’t a thing in the book). And that is one of the reasons why I love Becca and Krista’s writing, the characters just have such an amazing chemistry that I was honestly shipping things barely three chapter in and it only get a hell lot better from there. I felt like these characters were just so well built, it was like they were old friends at some point and even the non-romantic relationships were just so amazing and I was absolutely fascinated by this world where apparently people can’t die unless it’s their death day and the atmosphere of this book is simply amazing.

While I did enjoy the plot and thought it was very intriguing, I think there were some things ... lacking, but then I don’t think that’s the right word, maybe the best word would be ‘bugging’ through the whole book, which I know is not necessarily a bad thing because it keeps us on the edge, wanting to know more. But I feel like some things on the book weren’t explained very well, and I know that we have another book to look forward to, that hopefully has proper answers, which is why I don’t really think this is a major problem, since it could easily just be left to be resolved later. I did find it a tad long and while I enjoyed the first part quite a bit, I thought it started to be a little dragged once I reached the second one, but it wasn’t anything to make me drop it, it just meant it took me a while longer to actually get to the end, I think maybe if it had like fifty or even one hundred pages less it would have been better!

4 stars - Futuristic, sci-fi YA novel with amazing friendships/relationships.

Authors Krista Ritchie and Becca Ritchie provide excellent world building. The story takes place on a frozen planet, centuries into the future. Over the course of many chapters, readers are slowly exposed to the religious beliefs, scientific explanations, social structure, norms and customs of this planet’s inhabitants. I really enjoyed learning about this planet and appreciated the lack of info-dump.

‘The Raging Ones’ is told through alternating points of view of Franny, Court, and Mykal, which blend together to provide readers with a more complete picture of the story than any character has on their own. When the story begins, Franny is working on plans for her upcoming deathday. Court and Mykal, having both inexplicably dodged their deathdays, are making arrangements to lie, steal, and deceive their way into the highly coveted and limited positions aboard a space shuttle.

After the boys rescue Franny from nefarious thieves, she joins in their preparations. Of the three, only Court has experience with the upper-class Influentials whom they need to imitate in order to gain positions on the space mission. Lessons in etiquette, posture, speech, writing, reading, eating, and dressing help to bring Franny up to speed and reinforce Mykal’s understanding. Meanwhile, all three teenagers adjust to various aspects of living with their new bond.

Once the trio arrives at the space mission training center, they must compete with over a thousand other applicants. The connection shared between them differentiates ‘The Raging Ones’ from other YA competition books such as The Selection or Hunger Games.

The beginning of the book might seem a little slow to some readers, but I’m very glad I stuck with it. These three characters are far more interesting once they meet up and slowly share their secrets. The friendships/relationships that build between them are wholly unique experiences, and what really makes this book shine in my opinion.

Join Franny, Court, and Mykal on their adventure, starting August 14, 2018. #TheRagingOnes #NetGalley

Three teenagers sharing a mystical bond in a YA book isn’t abnormal. In fact, some would say it’s downright cliché. What isn’t cliché is how the bond isn’t romantic. At least, it’s not romantic in terms of a love triangle featuring two boys fighting over one girl. In fact, the boys are much more interested in each other than the new girl.

Okay, so I have to be honest. I was intrigued by this book not because of the main synopsis, but because of the LGBT characters plus the sci-fi element. Too often in YA, LGBT characters are relegated to contemporary stories only, and I’m not here for it. I want some SFF diversity. So when I started this one, I wasn’t totally sure what I was getting into. And by the end of it, I was just like “Huh?” and “What in the world did I just read?” And not necessarily in a good way.

The plot of this book starts out weirdly, but the characters are what lead the story. Court is kind of a more emotional Kaz Brekker. Mykal is… well, he’s Mykal. I don’t know of very many characters like him. He’s a gruff, simple, outdoorsy dude. He’s like a younger, hotter Ron Swanson on an ice planet. And Franny is pretty simple in terms of lifestyle as well. She does what she wants. She’s unique, but she’s got a little Tris and/or Katniss in her.

These characters’ backgrounds are fascinating, but—and this is a big BUT—those backgrounds could have been explored way more than they were. All three of the characters’ backstories were just summed over like they didn’t really matter. This was very frustrating. I don’t like it when readers don’t get the emotional impact from a previous event and instead are just told a very summed up, quickie version.

This problem transferred over into plot as well. Any time something remotely interesting happen plot-wise, two pages later, it would be wrapped up. Any fight or conversation took two seconds to fix. There was just a lot of showing and not a lot of telling. Everything was summed up instead of slowed down for dramatic effect, including relationship dynamics. This made the subplots dull, and it lessened the impact of the primary plot. Also, a lot of crying happened in this one. I was a little confused as to why the characters’ emotions were all over the place.

Okay, so those are the negatives. There are quite a few. However, I was sucked in about 15% of the way in, so the beginning is good. The middle is where things get hard to wade through, and then the ending, the very end, is where things pick up. The Raging Ones finally turned into the space story I was promised. Now, I want to see what happens in book two. I’m not dying to know, but I am curious.

All in all, this book could have been The Hunger Games meets The 100 (in space!) with its own super unique twist, instead, it went a totally different direction and kind of just floundered there. The relationships were meh and the plot was too summarized 90% of the time. I’d suggest going into this one with caution.

3/5 stars

This book was so different from what I was expecting, but I still loved it. I’ve been a fan of Krista and Becca Ritchie for a few years now, and this book followed their signature writing style, which I LOVE. However, it is a much different genre than what I’m typically used to reading from them. I’m not used to reading sci-fi, but I really enjoyed this book! The world building in this book was incredible. As soon as you pick up this book, you get thrown into the world of Saltare-3, and there is no detail missing. The distinction between the Influentials, Fast-Trackers and Babes was easy to pick up on, and such an interesting twist on class divisions. There are so many other elements that make this world so distinct from anything I’ve ever read, and somehow completely plausible.

Every person in this world knows their death day, and the authors take into account how this would influence the way a person lives, and apply it to their characters. The link between the three main characters is the only piece of the puzzle I have not yet completely figured out, and I’m hoping we’ll get answers in book two! My only complaint is that there were a lot of little intricate plots and I wasn’t sure why they were all relevant, but I promise, by the end it all makes sense and they were all necessary to reach the conclusion! Just be patient, you’ll see!

Of course, this book contains a love story just as wonderful as KB Ritchie’s other books, just on a YA scale. The love story was no where near the main focus of this book, which I really appreciated because it is not that genre. It was a nice, natural addition that really benefitted the story and provided great representation. The one canon couple by the end of the book is so sweet, I can’t wait to see more of them (and all the other characters!) in the next book. I have to say, besides the main three characters, Zimmer was my favourite. He was so funny, and parts of his story were heart wrenching. His mischief was one of my favourite parts of the story! I was unsure of him at first (you’ll know exactly why when you read it) but by the end I was totally invested in his story and I can’t wait to learn more about him, as well as the other side characters.

I would definitely read this book to any fan of YA, sci-fi or even fantasy, as well as those who already love Krista and Becca Ritchie’s writing! Definitely check it out, the book is so well written and it draws you in with lovable characters and an entirely new world. One of my top reads of 2018 for sure!

I enjoyed this, though it was a bit slow to start. We get dropped into a world where everyone knows the day they will die, only to experience one of our characters NOT dying on her deathday. She gets picked up by a pair of two boys whom this has also happened to after their emotions become linked, precisely because they are the only three people who have ever dodged their deaths. The first hundred pages or so is a little slow moving. We find out that the boys want to join an expedition to leave the planet, because if anyone ever found out they dodged their deaths, they'd be cut up like science experiments. Most of the beginning is just one of the boys, Court, teaching the other two, Franny and Mykal, how to pass as Influentials, who are the only members in this society who are eligible to join the expedition. Things start to get interesting when they try out for the expedition. I won't explain the plot further than that, but at the end, you learn that this has basically just been a big book of setup (and developing friendships) for a mystery that will be unraveled in book 2. What a cliffhanger! I'm very excited to see how that plays out.

Besides the curiosity induced at the end, my favorite part of the book was the characters. Mykal is extremely lovable and Court is so intriguing. Franny is very relatable. And the emotional link between the characters, and the INSANE experience of dodging death makes for an interesting evolution of their relationships. I won't go into detail, but I was very happy with where they were as a unit at the end.

Overall, I think it's a good YA debut for these authors. While I think the plot could have been more fast paced, I liked the characters enough that it wasn't much of a bother. The setting later in the book was interesting and I enjoyed seeing them in that. Among YA sci-fi, I thought the plot was unique. I haven't read anything similar to the deathday part of the plot, or the emotional linking. I'm definitely excited for the sequel!

Wow, this book took me by surprise. it was so good!

The story takes place on a planet that is covered in ice set over a thousand years in the future. In this world when someone is born they are given a death day, this is done by prodding them with a needle like apparatus and it spits out the date the will die. Everyone knows when they are going to die and there is no way to avoid it or for someone to die before their day. Of course nothing is ever easy in these worlds so there are three classes of citizens there are:
- The Babes who die at a very young age
- The Fast-Trackers who will die before they turn 29. They party it up and have a good time while it lasts and work the hard labour jobs.
- The Influentials who will die at an old age, they are basically the elite, they are allowed to go to university and live their life

Obviously there is a divide between these classes of people the Fast-Trackers are looked down upon by the Influentials.

The story is told from multiple perspectives: Court, Franny and Mykal. These three beat the odds, they beat the impossible and form such a deep bond they become such an unlikely trio. If anyone finds out they beat their deathday they will be hunted down so they plan to flee their planet by enrolling in the StarDust program which will send 5 people to space for the rest of their lives.

Of course like every YA sci-fi the characters are competing for a place in space for some unknown mission the government wont tell them about. Although I have read similar stories before I really enjoyed this one because of the cast of characters the unique bond the trio forms and the looming threat.

There is a little romance in this book and at the beginning I was all for Mykal and Court but as the book went on the relationship felt forced to me and made me lose interest in them. I was hoping Court and Franny would be a thing because their chemistry is like a firecracker. I see where a love interest might come in for Franny in the next book and I'm not here for that.

The best part was probably the shocking cliffhanger, i need the next book like right now! I need to know what happens!

All my sci-fi lovers out there, I recommend this book to you!

I just couldn't get into this book. I had so much hope for this one and it just seemed way to strange in a bad way to be good. A solid 3 stars from this reviewer.

This book was a bit of mess for me. The world building in this book was absolutely abysmal and not well put together. The author tended to build the world as she went along so it ended up leaving me confused and this also messed up the ending, because it was very unclear and rushed. The author took a very longtime to explain what a Fast Tracker, Babe, and Influential was and they didn’t explain the solar system or anything about it until the last 10% of the book even though all of this information should’ve been in the first 10%. This took a lot away from the book for me, because I don’t like feeling confused on how the world is built or how people are supposed to be in this society. They mentioned Gods and religion occasionally, but never fully elaborated which left me a very confused reader.
The character development for the main charactersin this novel went along very slowly, but it was well put together and I was left understanding the characters, however I was unable to see any of the amazing qualities they had that made them so highly ranked in StarDust. However, for the supporting characters their character was developed as the author seemed fit which made it weird to read, because there would be random bursts of character development then it would return straight to the plot.
The conflict in this book was unidentifiable and so badly put together. They didn’t mention one of the conflicts until the halfway through the book and they resolved it in about 5 pages so it was very anticlimactic. The other possible conflict (I’m not sure if it was even a conflict) was so stretched out and was never really resolved so it was just meh.

In a freezing world, where everyone knows the day they will die, three teens break all odds.

Franny Bluecastle, a tough city teen, dreams of dying in opulence, to see wealth she’s never known. Like the entire world, she believes it’s impossible to dodge a deathday.

Until the day she does.

Court Icecastle knows wealth. He also knows pain. Spending five years in Vorkter Prison, a fortress of ice and suffering, he dreams of life beyond the people that haunt him and the world that imprisoned him.

Mykal Kickfall fights for those he loves. The rugged Hinterlander shares a frustrating yet unbreakable connection with Court—which only grows more lawless and chaotic as their senses and emotions connect with Franny.

With the threat of people learning they’ve dodged their deathdays, they must flee their planet to survive. But to do so, all three will have to hide their shared bond as they vie for a highly sought after spot in the newest mission to space. Against thousands of people far smarter, who’ll live longer, and never fear death the way that they do.

Well, first of all, I must say, I´m a great fan of KB books and I was ecstatic when I learnt I received an ARC to read and review this book. Can you believe my luck? Yeah, me neither.

So... The Raging Ones was a surprise, as a fan of KB work, read TRO was a suprise every step of the way.

About the storyline:

I knew it was a sci-fi book, but I didn´t expect the level of commitment they put through it. They create a whole new world, literally. With intricacies that left you think WTH just happenned? But, at the same time it was like our old little world.

I mean... the world they live in is full of prejudice toward babes and fast trackers and prejudice its something we all know very well, we see all around us, every day.

The way KB developed the plot, and started to unravel the story to us its really great, I didn´t felt like I couldn´t understand whats was happening. Sometimes, I felt like it was bit slow paced, and it could go faster without lose content or meaning. But it wasn´t enough to make me put the book down.

But, what really was a catch for me was their relationship. I expected more. I really wanted them to be a triad, and I felt sorry for Franny, whan I saw Court and Mykal as a couple, and she was left out. I hope all three of them become sometging more at the next book.

About the characters:

I loved Mykal, and I think he´s the glue to their relationship. He is the one who cares the most about Franny and Court. And they both let it go of their stupidity because of him.

Even though Court its the more intelligent one, Franny its the smartest one. She learnt fast even if she didnt had his academic background, and that says a lot, since he was a Wonder ( a super smart, gifted person)

Court, needs a review just for himself. He´s Intelligent, cunning, an Alpha in every way and he has great trust issues. I didn´t liked him as I liked Mykal and Franny, I thought he was cold toward both of them, but specially toward Franny.

About the end:

WTF!!!! I need the next one ASAP.

WTF !!!! Preciso do próximo, o mais rápido possível.

4.5 Officially!

We found each other in the winter wood.
He threw his arms around me like I’d been his long-lost friend. I hugged him like I was meeting my soul again. There are some moments and some feelings that I can’t even explain. I’m a young man of medicine and science and logic, but the sentiments I wield for Mykal transcend all three.

Dang you guys this was good. I mean I don’t know why I ever was worried because I have read and loved just about every single other book by these ladies. BUT in my defense, they had never ventured into the world of YA before and that can be a much different thing than the romance that we had been used to up until this point. I can very happily say that I am here to announce their debut into the world of YA is a stunning one (and I hope you all think so too!)

“But what will I do until then?”
She smiled as bright and lovely as the smile she wore on her deathbed. “You will live Franny. You will live hard…” She cupped my face. “Fast.” She rested her forehead on mine. “And full.”

The first thing that deserves note is the genius plot. Our main characters Franny, Court, and Mykal live on a planet that is always cold (fuck that) and a society that is separated into three different classes called the Influentials, the Fast Trackers, and the Babes. When everyone is born, everyone receives a death day and based on how old you will be when you die, you are fitted into one of those categories. Influentials will live to an old age and are able to go to school and make a good living for themselves because they simply have the most time, Fast Trackers ususally only live to be about 29 and are therefore forced into the labor jobs that don’t take long to learn but usually live the fiercest, and Babes of course only get a few years and are love and cherished for as long as they can be.

“You keep saying that you make my life dismal and bleak. But my world never felt as bright, as worthwhile and full, until I met you.”

What I thought was the most interesting was that compared to other books/movies based on people who have a countdown to their death, these people enjoyed knowing. They each had their specific roles in life and found comfort in knowing when exactly they were going to die. I mean on one hand I get it because you would never have to worry about the unknown—you would never get sick enough or injured enough to die before that specific date. You could plan to live life to its very fullest in the allotted time you were given.

His smile stretches his cheeks like they’re my cheeks. I can’t stop feeling. Can’t stop starting. Gods bless that’s beautiful

In the case of Court, Franny, and Mykal though, they dodged their death day and are somehow irrevocably bonded (literally) because of it. They can feel each other’s emotions, pain, tastes, etc. THIS is where I knew that the story would be solid right from the beginning. If those of you who have read this, haven’t read their other Calloway Sisters and Addicted series, you will have missed out on the AMAZING interactions they are able to portray between couples/friends/families in their books. You can never not feel the love, hate, hurt—any emotion on the spectrum. I don’t know what it is but their characters and their relationships are my favorite parts of their writing. I was worried about the possibility of a love triangle but it was for nothing. Court and Mykal do have a stronger and deeper emotional and physical connection (no secret, we see this right away) but the one they share with Franny becomes just as important. I really wonder how it all will play out, especially with ~certain~ revelations that come out at the very end of this first book.

I feel them. For the first time I realize they’ve been my strength, my hope, and they can be my peace. I just have to let them help me. And to do that, I need to grow the courage to speak.

The only part that people *might* not like is that these ladies don’t give us all of the information right away..on anything really. At first I didn’t have a concrete vision of the planet, what the different social structures were all about, or why these three dodged their death days and became connected when no one else has. You do gain this knowledge though as you go along and once I started to, I kind of like that we were kept in the dark at first. I mean, Franny was thrown for such a loop when she dodged her death day and I felt like we were there with her, learning about how Court and Mykal have lived like that for years and how she now had a possibility to begin a new life and maybe even see the stars in the process.

“You’ve stolen my heart, you little crook.”
His smile only stretches further and brighter. “My most valuable theft.”

I hope that everyone gives this a try and that they love it, I really do. I think this is going to be one kick ass series and I am already so in love with each character and so intrigued with what could possibly happen in the next book. That’s the only hard part about getting ARCs….not only do I have to wait for this to actually come out for everyone else, but it makes the wait for book two that much longer. SIGHHH. Oh well, it was more than worth it!

ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review. The quotes above were taken from an ARC and are subject to change upon publication. THANK YOU NetGalley and Wednesday Books for the chance to read this early.

The last line of the prologue, remember it and be prepared to be blown away. I’m not usually one for sci-fi books but I went into this book with high hopes because I love Krista and Becca’s other book series.
The plot was a little slow at times but world building in a new series takes a lot of time. The thing I liked most was how the “bond” between Court, Franny, and Mykal was handled. It was such a complex thing individually, as a trio, and for each possible pairing. Yet at no time did it feel like any relationship was forced or forgotten. The three main characters are so different and intriguing in their own ways.
I have so many questions about the last few chapters I can’t wait for book two.

The prologue of the book drew me in from the first line:

"I hurry."

And by the last line of the prologue:

"I am the enemy."

I was hooked.

The Raging Ones is a sci-fi fantasy that follows three main characters (Franny, Court and Mykal). The book is fast paced from the beginning, but one thing that slowed me down was the shift of POV from each of the three main characters.

At times it was hard for me to remember which character was narrating, and had to flip back to the beginning of the chapter. But overall, the change of POV between the three characters was executed well.

The first few chapters are slightly confusing to the rest of the book, but after fully committing to the story, and you find out how each character is connected to each other the individual storylines tie together and everything starts to make sense.

I was intrigued by the setting of the book (on another planet) and how each person knows the day that they are going to die. Based on each person's deathday they are split into social classes. solely based on how long they are to live. Along with the world building of an icy planet, I found the setting and plot to be absolutely brilliant.

Court's character is mysterious and I really wanted to get to the bottom of his mysterious past. The characters are dynamic, and unpredictable with real emotions.

Once I was about halfway through the book, I couldn't put it down. It was fast paced with a lot of action, and emotions, and twists & turns and basically everything I love in a good book. I definitely cannot wait to read whatever comes next!

Reviewed this ARC I received from Netgalley on my blog. Check it out!

I admit that I am not naturally drawn to the sci-fi/fantasy genre but I was extremely intrigued by the concept of a world where everyone lives knowing the day they will die. What I am naturally drawn to are characters and the connections they form and this book delivers with 3 strong lead characters.

So when I started this book I wasn't prepared for how heart broken I would be discovering how living with these expiration dates would divide society and impact how everyone measures their self-worth and the value of others. It made the first chapters of this book difficult for me to read but I am so glad I pushed through because once our three characters are united and begin to reveal the extent of their true connections to one another is when this book begins to shine.

This book is unique in it's use of a 3 POV format and each of the three lead characters brings an interesting perspective to the story. I found the connections between the characters both beautiful and heart breaking at the same time.

It's clear this is the first book of a series so you can expect a cliffhanger but the cliffhanger I was left with wasn't exactly the cliffhanger that I was expecting. I can't wait to read what happens next.

Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me this arc in exchange for an honest review!

I have been a fan of the Ritchie sisters for years now. I was a little wary of a YA book, but OMG they hit another one out of the park. Just nailed it out of the park.

We meet Franny first on the day before her deathday. My heart broke for her and I wanted to rage at that bank teller. We think we've seen the last of her in the alley.

Then we meet Court, can I say I think I liked his POV the best? We learn him and Mykal have survived their deathdays. They have been together for a year and are linked together, which I find so fascinating. The rest of the story revolves around these three being linked and the only thing they have in common is that they all survived their deathdays.

They are trying for 3 of 5 spots on the StarDust ship so they aren't found out. Court seems to be the one that has the most desire to escape as he feels someone is out to kill him. So he teaches Mykal and now Franny how to act like an Influential. (one of three classes of their time)

Not only do you fall in love with Mykal, Court, and Franny; but the side characters as well. Kindred, Zimmer, Gem, etc.

This book lays the foundation for a great series.

This book had me hooked so quickly! The character introductions were compelling and they did an amazing job of introducing this new world without overwhelming me with terms and places.
I loved the world building, the descriptions of the icy planet were interesting and such a fresh, new idea.
It had such a great use of secondary characters, of telling you who they are and what they're like without overshadowing the main characters or the plot.
The authors also gave us such a great understanding of the link between the three main characters while keeping me super intrigued by the plot. The romance in this book was strong and sweet in its subtleties and I adored it.
There was also such great characterisation in this book. By the end of the book I had such a good understanding of Court, Mykal and Franny and their motivations and personalities and I truly cannot wait to see what happens to them next.
The ending was so compelling and I'm so excited to read more.
What I loved most about this book is that I haven't read anything like it before.
