B.A Paris has done it again. This book was extremely addictive and I couldn't wait to see what happened. I was invested in the characters and felt the pacing was excellent. I was hyped for this one and it didn't disappoint. Five stars!!
I have read B.A. Paris other two books; one I loved and the other I felt was a very cookie cutter type of thriller/suspense novel. What I liked about this latest book was the fact that I wanted to see how it turned out - if what I thought half way trough was going to be the actual ending. It was with a tiny twist. I really liked the idea behind this book, what I am getting frustrated with is the drawn out approach or disseminating the info to the readers. Being a huge fan of Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and their ilk, this new style of mystery thriller I find lacking in the great build up.
So many parts of this book I don't feel true to how a person would react in real life, and that always bothers me. I do like how the author sets up the book in the past and present times, and from the two different characters perspective, I just don't like how those character come across, they were at most times inane conversations, with no depth whatsoever. I can not imagine any couple of friends having the superficial and sparse conversations they all had.
Oh well, the book was a fast read, parts were engaging, many though you just wanted to speed read through to get to something of interest. I like this genre, I just like it better when it is well done.
I really enjoyed this mystery. It was so unlike anything I have ever read before. I really do not know what more to say as I really do not want to spoil anything for anyone. If you like good mysteries and little twists this would be a great choice for you. I felt the finish was perfect for this story although not quite what I expected. I will definitely look for more from B.A. Paris
I enjoyed this BA Paris novel but not as much as their previous books, something was lacking
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Was very excited to read this as I LOVED "Behind Closed Doors" - while I didn't enjoy it as much, I was still eager to keep reading. The story flips back & forth from past to present & from the perspective of different characters. I felt the ending was a little far fetched and so, it was disappointing.
I was really excited to read this book! It was paced just right, with an unexpected ending! Would definitely recommend!
I love B.A. Paris novels. Although this novel is not quite as good as Behind Close Doors. I really liked this book . By the time I was sure I figured it out I was dreading the ending because I knew what was going to happen but I still liked it.
WOW!!! What an emotional roller coaster! One of the best stories I’ve read in some time. Highly recommend!!
**Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review**
4 Stars
When I saw that B.A. Paris was coming out with another book, I was excited. I have read both Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown, and developed a sense of excitement for what this new author brought to the page. The description of Bring Me Back grabbed me right away. A couple in love, Finn and Layla, go on vacation and suddenly she goes missing. I was hooked. The story flips back and forth from the lead up to the night of the incident and current times, 12 years later where Finn is getting ready to get married...to his disappeared lover's sister, Ellen. Of course, nothing is as it seems, and the closer they get to their wedding, the more someone wants to make Finn doubt that Layla is really gone for good. I love when books share 2 or more story lines, and this one was done well. The end of each chapter grabbed on to me and would not let me put this book down. I had to continue reading just to find out what had happened all those years ago. It did not take the whole book to find out, and I really appreciate that in a story. Overall, I really enjoyed the premise and the writing, but I was a little letdown at the overarching twist at the end of the story, which is why I knocked off one star.
Interesting read. Grabs you right from the first page. Takes a little to get used to the alternating chapters. At times you want to skip to the next section for one or the other of the segments. The ending is a bit far fetched. That would be the only negative to the book. I recommend it!
This is My first novel by this author, so perhaps that was a factor. I found the novel OKAY. I loved the premise, but parts dragged in the middle, and there were too many cliches for my taste. I would, however, give this author one more try. And if you like books that play out precisely as you expect them to, then this is definitely for you.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I am a real fan of B. A. Paris but this one wasn’t my favorite. It started off great and then kind of dragged on a bit. There were some twists and turns but not what I was expecting. The ending was good but still left me unimpressed.
I have read other books by this author. She really knows how to build suspense and keeps you turning the pages until the very end of the books. I always try to figure out what is going on in the book, and in this one I had part of it right, but not all. Lots of twists. In my mind that is what makes the book exciting, if you can’t figure it all out!
I need to premise this review with the fact that I LOVE B.A. Paris! Everything I've read by the author is stellar and I would completely recommend to anyone looking for something a little different.
Bring Me Back did NOT disappoint! It was sooo amazingly awesome! Just when I thought I'd figured it all out, something new was revealed that threw me for a complete loop. This is probably the best novel by Paris to date! The insanity that occurs start to finish really takes you for a wild ride! Will be recommending this to all my friends!
Finn and Layla are returning from a skiing trip in France. They stop at a rest stop and Layla disappears. There are no clues and the police don't suspect that Finn had anything to do with it.
12 years later, Finn is moving on with his life. He is going to marry Layla's sister, Ellen. She is very different from Layla and Finn loves her. Now he's getting messages from Layla.
This book was quite the page turner for me. I had a hard time putting it down. I thought it was suspenseful and fast paced but the ending seemed to be wrapped up a little too quickly. For a fast paced thriller, give this book a try. I got it from Netgalley for an honest review. I will post to Amazon in June and have posted to my Goodreads.
I can't decide how I feel about this. I saw the twist coming, which is rare for me, but the plot was still pretty masterfully done. I did find good bit of it unbelievable in terms of character believability, but I always consider whether or not a book compels me to keep turning pages and this one did.
This is my first ARC read!! How exciting!
I wasn't a big fan of this author before I read this book. The other one of the books I read was "The Breakdown" and I wasn't crazy about it (I hate when the main characters suffers with memory loss in a book). Anyways one of my good friends is a fan and marked this book in her "to-read" section and I gave it a chance too!!
I'M SO GLAD I DID!
This is definitely a psychological thriller. This book hooked me within the first 3 chapters and I read the whole thing within a 24 hour period. There were a few creepy aspects to it that I loved and although I had it figured out about 60% in I still couldn't put it down. My main hunch ended up being right but the author still kept me doubting, feeling all the "what ifs" the main character was feeling. I loved how into this story I was. It had me feeling the same way I felt while reading Gone Girl. All in all I'd say this book is definitely 5 star worthy. It will keep you hooked and wanting more!
I did not finish this book. I was almost halfway through and gave up. I had a hard time investing I the characters, especially Finn. The twists were almost annoying. Then I get to a part where a female character made excuses for a man’s rage against her and I had enough. This book was not for me.
This was fun! I ended up reading straight through. Great page-turner. I can’t wait to read more by the author.
“Bring Me Back” by B A Paris starts with thought-provoking first person comments from twelve years prior. “I should have been nearer. That was the statement I gave to the police… It was the truth. But not quite the whole truth.” Right from the start, we know he is not exactly truthful.
The tone of the story is suspenseful and tense right from the start. Layla is gone, except that being declared dead is not the same as being dead. Finn is haunted by his past and by Layla, so why he is engaged to marry Ellen, Layla’s sister? What else he is hiding? It should not matter since twelve years have passed, but it does. And now, someone has seen her, Layla.
The characters are stealthy, and it is not always clear who is narrating any particular portion. What is clear is, however, that is that there is a massive hidden mystery, and everyone has secrets of epic proportions. The conflict engages the reader and causes distrust in the narrator. Readers wonder page after page not only what will happen next but also what happened in France twelve years before. Here a little lie, there a little, lie everywhere lies, lies, and more lies.
The storyline is not linear, and chapters alternate back and forth in time to show how the past events shaped the present. Some chapters are directed to the reader; in others, the narrative is directed to Layla. Chapters also alternate between narrators to allow characters to tell the story in their own voices and from their own perspectives. Chapters are tagged to identify time frame and eventually the person communicating. The first person construction enhances the distrust because readers see the duplicity and are perplexed by the secrets. Little clues and misdirection in every chapter build to a shocking revelation.
Fun note -- Layla is from the land of Peter May -- Lewis, a remote island in the Outer Hebrides,
I received an advanced copy of “Bring Me Back” from B. A. Paris, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley. Paris created compelling characters and a suspenseful story that keeps readers turning pages to see what happens next. I highly recommend it with the caveat that that you should not schedule anything but reading because once you start you will not be able to put this down.
