This was a decent story and I somewhat enjoyed both the hero and the heroine. Skye and Ash were both well-written characters. However, nothing really stood out making it a great book.
4 1/2 Insane Stars!
Skye is broken and there is only one person who understands her ... her foster brother Bean because he was right there along side her getting abused by their foster father. Years later Skye is a doctor, but she still can’t be intimate with anyone without having a panic attack. And then she meets Ash in a coffee shop. He sees right through her tough exterior and inserts himself into her life. Skye doesn’t know that Ash is a famous rock star ... all she knows is that he really sees her ... the real her and he’s not running away. Will Ash be able to save Skye from herself? Or will the darkness the Skye’s childhood overtake her?
This is a great story and had me captivated from the first chapter. My heart just broke for both Skye and Ash ... but for entirely different reasons. Skye suffered unimaginable abuse as a child and I just wanted to hold her and make everything all right for her. Ash was a rock star who no longer enjoyed the perks of his career ... meaningless sex, drugs and alcohol and I couldn’t help but want him to stay away from the devil’s devices that had overtaken him before he got clean. And then there is Bean (or Forest) ... now he was seriously screwed up! A great beginning to this series and I can’t wait to read the other band member’s stories.
I received a copy courtesy of JEM Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
This book is definitely not what I expected!
Obviously we know this is a love story and one surrounding a rock band, but OMG is it so much more! First off, I absolutely love how the couple meet! Skye has no idea who the band is or why they think they are above everyone else. When the band members take the last remaining open seats in a coffee shop leaving two elderly women to stand, she takes action and puts them in their place. She had a horrible day (after seeing something that can never be unseen) and that was the last straw.
Ash (aka Blaze) takes off after her intending to return the backpack she left behind, but instead his life changes in a way that he never expected. The idea that he convinces her to take him with her for her three day getaway is a little far fetched, but nonetheless the connection between the characters makes this work.
Skye gets to know Ash without really knowing who he truly is which is what Ash finds most attractive about her. Once she learns his true identity though their perfect little bubble is popped. LOVED the trip to Niagra Falls and what happened there. It was one of those things that leave you laughing and shaking your head at the same time.
Skye's story is absolutely heart breaking. To survive what she did and still be a functioning member, a doctor no less, of society is something that needs to be commended. I'm glad the author didn't paint her as a survivor who had no issues and had overcome everything. The author clearly did her research on PTSD and painted a very realistic picture of what this looks like.
OMG...Forrest. God my heart broke for him. Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have his story? Whatever happened to Daniels?
Can't wait to read what's next for this band! And hopefully another glimpse of this couple because wow that epilogue was just amazing!
"Their lead singer's voice wraps around you in so many layers of sinful goodness."
Yeah, it was the guitar on the cover that got me. I don't know why, but I have a crazy addiction to rocker romance with guitars on the cover, I can't resist them. For that reason, this is my first Ellie Masters read. I found her by following the guitar, and I'm so glad that I did. I was expecting a lighthearted, predictable insta-love story with a little backstage action, but this was so much more...
Usually, it's the rockstar with all the baggage. I've read my share of broken bad boy stories, and I love them. But, while Ash has had his share of problems when faced with too much of everything available to a rocker at the top of his career, he's not out of control when he runs into Skye. He might be a little jaded, disillusioned by the fact that nobody seems to be able to see past his stage name, his guitar, and his money. He performs in front of thousands, but none of them really see him.
Skye has accepted her current status and she's content. Maybe not deliriously happy, but content with her chosen career. It feels good to save lives and help people. When asked what made her want to be a physician she remembers a time in her past when someone needed her help and she didn't know what to do. She would later push herself mercilessly through medical school to make sure she was never faced with that excruciating feeling of helplessness ever again. The many hours of study required all of her concentration and helped her to keep her mind focused on her future and away from her painful past. She liked the nonstop pace of being a busy ER Physician who worked twelve-hour shifts and then fell into bed in exhaustion afterward.
Neither Ash or Skye were looking for each other when they ended up in the same coffee shop one morning. Usually, she avoids confrontation, but he just happened to be the lucky recipient of her rare case of angered frustration and she let her snark loose on him and his whole band. She schooled them on their manners and showed a side of herself that very few have ever witnessed. The fact that she had no clue who they were was obvious and exactly what made her so intriguing to Ash.
As the author revealed Skye's story to me gradually, peeling back a layer at a time, I became so invested that you couldn't pry my Kindle out of my hands with a crowbar, or a candy bar. I was hooked. I was curious to know what happened to her to make her so devastatingly broken and believing she could not be fixed. I wanted to see if Ash would be the one to prove her wrong. When he came up with his crazy proposition I was fully onboard, supporting his efforts to convince her that he wasn't just after sex, but "the bigger prize." She'd been hurt so badly, damaged so deeply, that it was hard for her to trust. But who could resist a sexy rock star who admits that, "I've never been stood up until you. Never been denied until-shit, this is crazy, but what if I gave my word to keep my junk in my jeans?" Not me, that's for sure!
What else can I say? I loved this story. It broke my heart and put it back together again. It had me #ChasingWaterfalls. It made me fall in love with more than just the main characters and I'm really hoping there will be future books that feature the other band members and especially one that will give Skye's brother the HEA he deserves. Regardless, I've found a new author to follow. Her writing is so smooth I forgot I was reading and just started feeling. I'll definitely be looking out for whatever she has for her readers next. The line forms here...
Really great story. I liked all of the characters including the brother. The whole story was very good! Can’t wait to read more.
This is a powerful book that may have triggers for some people. I think when a book is well written it affects people, hence the trigger warning. Ash gets a taste of the real Skye, ER Dr., when she sees him for the first time and lets him have it for his bad behavior. This tongue lashing both pisses him off and excites him at the same time. Find out how these two come tighter amidst the back history.
This is an emotional, feel good rockstar romance. Skye is a doctor working in the emergency room when she first meets Ash. When Skye meet Ash, she has no idea he is a big rockstar and treats him like she would anyone else. Skye grew up in foster care and has to work hard for everything she has achieved. Her childhood was a nightmare and the only good that came out of it, is her foster brother, Forest. Skye is hard working, trustworthy, spunky and has character. Her past has made her a driven person, yet she is still haunted by it. After all the pain she has suffered, she deserves some happiness.
Ash is sexy and nice and chases after Skye. He grew up in a normal family and has a great outlook on life. He is down to earth and unspoiled by his success. Ash can’t believe he has finally met a woman who treats him like he is normal and doesn’t have ulterior motives. Ash is caring, protective and patient with Skye and wants to help her.
Skye and Ash have an immediate bond and he never gives up on her. Skye has a hard time understanding what a famous rock star would see in her. This is an entertaining story with lots of chemistry between Skye and Ash.
What a gorgeously brutal book., written with passion and tenacity.
I truly loved it. Ash is adorable. He bought some real light to Skye’s story. Beautifully written what a joy to read.
Skye’s backstory is a dreadfully painful story it won’t be for some so be warned.
Heart's Insanity is a different sort of rock star romance.
Skye is an ER doctor who works lots of intense, long shifts. When she walks in on her fiancé with another woman, she knows she needs to walk away, but he doesn't seem so inclined to let her go. Not because he loves her, no, because of a very different reason. But, when Skye meets the man who will turn her life upside down, and it's just a day after her fiancé cheats on her, she isn't so sure she wants another man in her life. Especially when she finds out that man comes with things like paparazzi, groupies, and a past filled with lots of women and stays in rehab. But, how can she turn away the only man who's been able to make her feel?
I really like Heart's Insanity. It's not the usual rock star romance. For one, Skye's backstory, the one shared with her foster brother Bean (Forest) is heartbreaking and unusual, even in a genre littered with abusive backstories. And Ash (Blaze) is not the typical rock star hero. He's neither a jerk nor is he particularly alpha or womanizing, although he does have a past filled with lots of women. But in his present, he's a seriously sweet guy who just wants to have Skye in his life, if she'll just let him in past her walls.
The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars? Skye's character frustrated me. It was understandable, given her past, but I just found it really hard to connect with her. She was too remote for me to connect with, and she never warmed up. I suppose that's realistic, but it just did not endear me to her. Other than that, though, Heart's Insanity is everything I love in a good rock star romance - sweet, sexy, fully fleshed out, layered characters, and a strong emotional and physical connection. I hope more is coming from the Angel Fire guys!
