Brian has been in a supposed persistent vegetative state for 5 years, but unknown to anyone, he is completely awake and aware, just unable to move or communicate. His mind never stops and is filled with often alliterative and rambling wordplay. I really liked this at first, when things were clearly still in Brian's head, but then he started communicating through psychics and undergoing bizarre treatments that left him able to speak but only in Latvian, etc. It was kind of ridiculous, a circus of conversations with dead people (and a dog), a shaman, God as a metaphor. It wasn't terrible, just not really what I had hoped for and not really my sort of book in the end. A little more experimental than I would prefer. I'd still give it 3 stars, though I hoped for better.
Well, this is certainly different, exploring the mind of a patient in a coma, supposedly unable to know anything. In a sense he is a joke character, partly because of the circumstances of the accident that put him there and partly because of the way his coma thoughts are written. It is very well written and the reader is hooked by the hope he will surface but who knows what will happen? The whole script is an original and well executed idea. The ending is rewardingly surprising.
I really enjoyed this book. It was like being taken along on an amazing journey with characters who became good friends. Very realistic characters, and I especially enjoyed Brian, his humour really made for a great read. I kept trying to figure out where this was all leading, but at the same time I didn’t want it to end. Just finished, and this story will stay with me. An interesting topic to write about, this book could have taken a depressing turn, but in this authors hands, it’s almost magical. Thank you for the opportunity to read this amazing work!
