A moving story about two girls and their changing friendship. Korean/White Sara and Japanese/White Nadine have been friends for as long as they can remember. They live across the street from one another and spend as much time in one another's houses as they do in their own. When Nadine reveals at the end of the summer that she'll be skipping 7th grade and going straight to 8th (high school in Canada), Sara is crushed and worried that their friendship won't be able to withstand Nadine moving up in the world, as it were. Although she befriends Nadine's younger sister, Jen, and attempts to secure grades that will allow her to skip 7th grade as well, she despairs as she realizes that Nadine has new friends and seems to be purposely putting an end to their friendship.

Michelle Kim has a unique and fresh writing style. Her story is infused with cultural details, true friendships, and the pain of growing up and growing away from the most important person in your life.
