Thank you for the opportunities to read this book. I have attempted it on a number of occasions but unfortunately I haven’t been able to get into it.
This is the first book in the Bone collector series, and sets the tone for a brilliantly written, compelling and gripping new series. From the beginning of the book I was gripped, and the creepiness just jumps from the pages.... Highly recommended!
This is a great serial killer thriller. I enjoyed it and could not seem to put it down. The only reason I rated this novel a 3 is the disturbing aspect of it. it is not for the faint of heart. It is well worth the read if you can get over that part of the novel.
A great debut novel, put time aside to read in one sitting.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
This is the debut novel by author Fiona Cummins. The Bone Collector is a serial killer with an obsession of collecting rare skeletal deformities from both humans and animals. This is the opening book to a series that I am sure will get better but sadly for me it did not connect.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Kensington books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This book was just amazing!!!! I am,so lucky to have the collector sent to me as well but, wow!!! The chAracter development was great
Fans of creepy thrillers guaranteed to cause nightmares need look no further than Fiona Cummins’ Rattle. Finding a creative, yet believable, motive for evil behavior is tricky business, but this book delivers. Some of these word-pictures will never leave my mind – and I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing.
Rattle by Fiona Cummins is the first book in the new The Bone Collector series. The series a dark sort of thriller read featuring a detective on the hunt for a serial killer with an peculiar type of victim.
The Bone Collector is after a certain type of victim in the story which introduces readers to certain medical conditions about bone deformities. A young child in the story suffers from this very rare disease which makes him a perfect target for the killer that Detective Sergeant Etta Fitzroy has linked to other disappearances.
As with most books that feature a killer this one isn’t exactly for the faint of heart. I was actually expecting a bit more horrific myself with comparisons to Silence of the Lambs. It’s definitely a solid read but I often wondered if you took out the victim type would this turn into any other police procedural/serial killer book out there.
The most compelling parts of the read for me were of little Jakey and learning about his horrific disease. I honestly can’t imagine what those diagnosed go through or what the parents go through trying to care for someone with the disease. You can’t help but feel for him but when reading the rest I never really felt as pulled in as during the parts with Jakey. Overall though it was a decent start to the series that makes me wonder where it will head next.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Every once in awhile I’m just in the mood to be scared witless and boy did this book fit the bill for me. The Bone Collector was one creepy character and kept me awake for more than one night and I loved every minute of it.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a creepy serial killer, a book so well written that you can picture every gruesome image in your mind and be okay if those images stay for awhile, and a fabulous detective who never gives up. This will be a long time favorite for me.
Exceptionally creepy serial killer procedural with the unusual twist that it is small children who are taken. Etta is determined to find this fiend, especially because it hits her triggers. The story is told from a variety of perspectives, notably the parents of the children, which is not unique in this genre but Cummins has done a good job with the different voices. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is a quick read that you might find distasteful because of the victims but you will be heartened by Etta.
The story started off slow with very little build in the case and while the story its self is a little creepy I found the writing its self basic and nothing original. Detective Sergeant Etta Fitzroy seem to be a little odd but towards the end she was hard and difficult to understand and I found myself as a reader flipping pages until the story ended.
Thank you to Netgalley and McMillian for the advance copy.
Wow wow wow Fiona Cummins is definitely an author to watch if you love a good mystery with lots of twists and an abundance of grisly gore then this is for you.
The Bone Collector is much more than his name suggests and is a serial killer you won't forget anytime soon.
If I could have given 6 stars I would - Fantastic
An enjoyable thriller. Would highly recommend to fans of the genre.
Great book! Looking forward to reading more by this author! Highly recommend!
Great storyline. Keeps the reader wanting more all the way through
This is a very creepy and disturbing book, so readers should proceed with caution. The Bone Collector is a serial killer that likes to collect and display the bones of his victims – always “collecting” those with skeletal abnormalities for his twisted collection. DS Etta Fitzray sees connections between a missing girl and the cold case that has troubled her for years. As she follows the trail of a twisted killer, Etta gets closer and closer to true evil. This book scared me – I’ll be looking under my bed for a few days!
I went into this book with a really high expectation due to the promotional line – A psychopath more frightening than Hannibal Lecter, so I felt a little let down with this book. But Hannibal Lecter aside it is certainly a creepy disturbing read. And the subject matter is fascinating, I learned more about some medical conditions that I knew existed but was ignorant of the workings of the human body.
The serial killer (The Bone Collector) is a well fleshed out character and the workings of his mind makes him really interesting, he is a man who has spent his lifetime fascinated by bones and their diseases. Leading two lives, one as carer for his wife who suffers from MS and as a night time cleaner in a hospital and the other as the keeper of his family’s macabre museum. But it is his victims and his collection that are the stars of the show!
Two abducted children and the race to find them was a real page turner. It comes to light that they both have bone deformities. Stone Man Syndrome was a condition I hadn’t been aware of prior to reading this book and it has been fantastically written and incredibly researched. It not only encompassed fear through the mind of a child but also the fear that parents have about losing their child. You could almost feel the tensions developing within the families of the missing children and how all the individual family members were dealing with their emotions, the writing was so good that their emotions had a way of escaping the pages and seeping into your own emotions!
You also get an insight into the strain that having Jakey and the demands his condition has wrought on Lilith and Erdman’s marriage as well as the impact his disappearance has on them. Erdman is trying to survive the pressures of his job and failing and his love for Jakey leads him to try to find the serial killer single-handedly! – Maybe not the best decision of his life but as a parent i know i would do the same!
The ending is a cliff hanger, and this thought provoking finale stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page! Luckily the second book in the series The Collector is out now 🙂
