Another brilliant twisty turny book in this series! Just the right amount of professional versus personal life of the characters to keep us wanting more too! Can’t wait for another one!

This is the second Cara Hunter book I have read and this is as good as the first. What originally seems like a case of keeping someone imprisoned in a cellar quickly turns into something a lot more complicated. This title keeps you guessing and is full of twists and turns. Highly recommended.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars

An enjoyable book, particularly for a police procedural which I sometimes struggle with as they can be slow going and repetitive.

This book however has plenty of twists and turns, the chapters are told from various points of view so we get a good dose of backstory of the police main characters, and I liked that the chapters are interspersed with police logs, diary entries, emails and web posts.

A girl and her child are found locked in an old man’s cellar. She is close to starvation and has been trying to claw her way out. Her story mirrors that of Donahue’s Room, or does it? Another body is found in the same house; the links and discrepancies between the two cases stirring up doubts and questions. This intense tale kept me enthralled, never quite sure exactly who was guilty of what right through to the very end. An extremely exciting read.

I really enjoyed Cara Hunter’s previous book Close to Home and In the Dark is just as good, if not better. It fairly races along and I like the clever use the author makes of multiple viewpoints and the way she uses the media and social media as a means of commentary on the action.

During renovations to a house in Oxford builders uncover seriously crumbling brickwork. As the bricks begin to fall away a hole through to the next door cellar is created and through that hole is a face. Who is in the cellar next door and why is the person there? DI Adam Fawley, who also featured in Close to Home, investigates.
There are plenty of twists and turns in this enthralling novel. It involves not only discovering who is in the cellar but also reopens the case of a woman who has been missing from the house behind two years ago. It had me guessing right to the end. I really recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley and publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.

I requested to read this book because I loved the authors debut 'close to home' I read this book in 2 days, it was all consuming and I couldn't wait to see how everything turned out. The book keeps you guessing until the very last page although I have to say that the ending did somehow disappoint me. There were loose ends that were not tied up and that really irritated me. The way in which things turned out also seemed dramatically far fetched. The book was slightly confusing at times due to surnames and first names being used at different times and perhaps too many characters introduced and not developed as much as I would have liked. It was nice to see a continuation of some of the characters from the first book and overall a good read.

In Hunter’s second novel, DI Adam Fawley returns to investigate an apparent Josef Fritzl style case. A young woman and child are found starving in the cellar of William Harper’s house. He’s a retired academic suffering from dementia. His garden backs onto that of Hannah Gardiner who disappeared the previous year. Not willing to believe it’s coincidence, Fawley re-examines the Gardiner case in tandem with the current one, to uncover exactly what happened to the girl in the cellar and how it’s linked to Hannah.

Into the Dark is aptly named, as it delves into the most macabre corners of the human psyche. Set a year after Close to Home, the first novel in the series, Into the Dark shares its multiple view points and breathless pace. Sympathies, for both the investigators and those being investigated, are continually yanked back and forth. It’s difficult to put down, and as someone who reads a lot of crime novels, and can usually guess the ending, I was confounded throughout.

If you liked Close to Home, you’ll love this. I read it in a couple of sittings.

This is a compelling read. It is basically a murder mystery but offers twists and turns to the plot that will keep readers riveted till the even more unexpected finale. The characters, including the detectives, are very well drawn and believable. The story is well written and would make a very good television series.

Cara Hunter and Adam Fawley a new author and a new detective to me, a very good story line a list of interesting characters and lots of twists and turns. Look forward to catching up with the author and detective in future stories.

When a young girl and baby are found locked in a cold dark cellar its up to DI Fawley and his team to piece it all together. She's so traumatized they have to play the waiting game for her to recover enough to tell them what happened. In the meantime the owner of the house is taken in for questioning. Is he really responsible for her being there? The more the police look into it, the more the story takes on twists and turns.
I won't reveal more than that, but I will say this is one hell of a fantastic story with plenty going on to keep you on the edge of your seat. I have no hesitation in recommending this thriller that gets a full five stars from me. Many thanks to Penguin Uk for granting me my copy via NetGalley. This is my honest and unbiased review

I absolutely loved this book. The plot, the characters, style of writing it was all up my street.
Story starts with the discovery of a young woman and a child in the basement of a house during renovation works. On further investigation police find a dead body. The house owner has dementia, but is he putting it on? Lots of suspects, including the social worker, family relative and husband of the dead woman. Red herrings in this story and it falls to D.I. Fawley and his brilliant young team to figure out.
Cara Hunter has written a stunner of a book and cannot wait to read her other books.

I really enjoyed this book, fantastic read full of twist and turns. The only bit I didn't like was the epilogue.

A compelling read, lots of twists and turns - expect the unexpected.
A womann and young child are found in a cellar of a house in Oxford. At first she will say nothing to help the police establish who she is and it’s complicated by the fact that no one has been reported missing.
As the story unfolds there appear to be links to the disappearance some years earlier of a reporter who lived in the same area.
This story has you hooked - don’t expect to guess the ending.

Another exciting thriller from Cara Hunter, with plenty of twists and turns.

As usual I will not comment on the plot (other than to say that a couple of things didn't quite ring true, but were explainable).

I read this in one day - couldn't put it down - which doesn't happen often! I look forward to reading more from this author.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in return for my honest review.

After I’d read the first few pages of this book, I had to google the author. Why hadn’t I heard of her before? The narrative was so compelling, I automatically assumed this author had written many books before. You can imagine my surprise when I learned this was only Cara Hunter’s second novel.
I don’t want to go into too much detail about the plot: you will be on the edge of your seat throughout most of this novel so I don’t want to give any spoilers, but let’s just say you better hold on to that seat while you take this ride or you might fall off. Although I did guess who Hanna’s murderer was; there are so many twists and turns I think this was just pot luck really. Ah I know, it was them; oh no it wasn’t; oh yes it was. Wasn’t. Was!
The narrative is a mixed one. There is a first-person narrative from the protagonist, DCI Adam Fawley, but there is a third person omniscient narration for the other characters. There is also some epistolary style narration in the form of police tape recordings.
The plot and the relationships between the characters is very cleverly twisted. Readers are in for a real treat with this one. There were times when I thought I was reading a Clare Mackintosh novel, so any fans of Clare’s will love this.
Another great author to add to my increasing list of favourites!
Under Literature Love’s rating system this book has met the criteria for a five star review within its genre.

A brilliant read with so many twists in the story that keep you gripped to the end. The story flows seamlessly from the viewpoint of one character to another giving great sense of pace.

This book is absolutely excellent, such a fabulous read with twists and turns that take the reader by surprise. I loved the first DI Fawley novel, I like this one even more. If like me you enjoy the police procedural genre then this is a must read.

Having enjoyed 'Close to Home' I was pleased to have the chance to read this next book. There are some stylistic annoyances, no chapters, a 'narrator' it's hard to relate to and constant changes of narration style, but the overall storyline which, again, keeps the reader guessing to the end makes it worthwhile persisting.
