This is the second book in the Adam Fawley series and i think is possibly better than the first book. Nothing better than a good police procedural that leaves you wanting more. Roll on book 3!

Psycological thriller at its very best. This read packs a punch from start to finish and has so many twists and turns that it was impossible to predict the final big reveal. Absolutely loved it!

As I have come to expect from Cara Hunter - a gripping, twisty, highly enjoyable thriller. Dark and immersive, clever and a good, quick, page-turning book that it was great fun to tear through.

An extremely well writtten detective story. A real page turner and I loved how the story unfolded. I hadn't read the first book but it worked as a standalone read. Both riveting and compelling in equal measure, The twists and turns make it a great page turner.

Dark, grim, grisly...not words you would normally associate with fantastic but in the case of In The Dark it's all too apt. After the first installment, Close To Home, I knew I was onto a good thing but In The Dark really exceeded my expectations. Again it's told from both Fawleys point of view which is deliciously sardonic, and also in the third person. This works well on many levels, making this a compulsive must read novel. There are enough twist and turns in this to make a Curly Wurly green with envy. Part 3 is due soon, but not soon enough!

Cara Hunter’s first crime novel, Close To Home, was picked for the Richard and Judy Book Club and her second, In The Dark, is a worthy successor.

It’s the second outing for the well-drawn DI Adam Fawley and his team and the book continues Hunter’s style of mixing news reports and Twitter reaction in with the story.

But In The Dark has even more twists than its gripping predecessor – which dealt with the disappearance of a young girl during a firework party at her home – and an even darker storyline.

A woman and child are found, barely alive, locked in a North Oxford basement.

The traumatised mother can’t speak and there are no missing person reports that match their profile.

The elderly owner of the dilapidated house appears to be suffering from dementia and claims he has never seen them before.

Then a body is discovered...

The crime thriller keeps you guessing until the end and there’s also pleasure to be gained recognising familiar Oxford locations and types of resident.
In fact, in her acknowledgements Hunter says: “I couldn’t have written this book without drawing on the special ‘genius of the place’ of Oxford. It’s an endlessly inspiring and surprising town, and I’m very lucky to live there.”

Her third DI Fawley thriller is set during the Christmas holidays when two children are pulled out of a burning house in the city. Their mother is missing and their father is not answering his phone.

It’s due out in January and I’m looking forward to it already.

Another great psychological, police procedural story by Cara Hunter. It begins with the discovery of the remains of a women and child in the cellar during renovations.. The story progresses from there with edge of the seat developments

A woman and a child are found in a cellar owned by Dr William Harper who incidentally has Dementia. The woman Vicky and her child are in a desperate state, dehydrated, starved.

Loved that this book kept me on my toes with lots of suspects along the way. There are lots of twists and it is a fast paced thriller. At first it seems like an open and shut case but as the story unfolds it is revealed to be grittier and darker!!

Having read “Close To Home ” the first in this series, it was great to see the police return and to see their characters develop, it was like meeting up with a long lost friend. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

This was a great thriller that kept me gripped through out and I felt a little sad when I had finished it!

I had not read the first book in the series and that didn't cause any issues and the characters felt well formed as a stand alone book.

Wow wow wow!!! What an amazing book with so much twists and turns you just never know how it’s going to pan out.

While the builders are renovating an old property for the new owners they accidentally come across a young woman and child who appear to have been locked up in the cellar of the house next door. Investigations to determine who the girl and child are and how they got there are proving fruitless and the owner of the house, an old man with Alzheimer’s has no idea how they got there. Can the Team uncover the mystery?

In the Dark is the second novel in the series featuring the troubled Oxford detective Adam Fawley and his team. Cleverly plotted, it is a worthy sequel to Cara Hunter's first novel and a must read for fans of crime procedural.

This book kept me engrossed, reluctant to leave it down until I had finished. A dark and twisted police murder mystery with a satisfying but unexpected final outcome. A great read, like the first in the series. Definitely an author to follow.

I thought this was a much better book than the first one. The writing was much improved, the plot was pacier, and the characters had been fleshed out a little more. There were still some moments where one of the characters did something completely stupid or it seemed to take the police a while to catch on to something that was obvious, but they are minor niggles. Overall it was a very good read.

Initially I was unsure whether to read the second DI Adam Fawley book as I was very disappointed with the rather incredible ending to the first book. However I am glad I did, as this book was a big improvement on the first. This time it concentrates mainly on the action within the CID department and its investigation into the discovery of a young mother and her toddler son imprisoned in a basement. This case in turn touches on an older missing persons case and the team find themselves re-opening the investigation. There are many apparent motives and changing alibis with several likely suspects as the story progresses along a well thought out plot to an unexpected and original ending. This book works fine as a stand alone since the team and their pasts are well described. I would be happy to recommend this book and am now looking forward to book number three.

Another good read from Cara that keeps you wondering exactly what happened until the end.
I felt it was a little disjointed in places and had to go back and 're read bits as I thought I'd missed something. But other than that a good read and I would recommend

Edited. I was reading an unedited arc, I have now received the finished book and do not feel it was as disjointed as previously stated as it flows better and has clear chapters.

Close to Home was good but In the Dark is even better. A good blend of different narrative perspective with a nice mix of press coverage and public commentary to round out the story line. The characters are all very human and although many have issues they are realistic rather than cliched. I like the fact that sometimes the perspective is that of Fawley but the rest of the characters are given a voice too. I am greatly looking forward to Book 3 as I think Cara Hunter and her varied cast will continue to provide pleasure for a long while to come.

Although this was the first of Cara Hunter‘s book that I read, it is second in the series, following Close to Home. Despite it being part of a series, I was able to read it fine as a standalone, although you do get told more about the detectives’ backstories here than in the first one so I would still recommend reading them in the correct order.

In The Dark is basically bloody brilliant and probably one of my top reads of 2018. It really is so gripping and so full of clever twists that I could barely put it down. I loved its complexity, its plot and its characters. Every one of them was perfectly formed – even if they were horrible people.

I like the way that the action moves from third person chapters and the ‘real time’ twitter posts, police interviews and TV news reports to DI Fawley’s first person insights. His dry, cynical narration sometimes made me picture him as a hard-boiled, noir PI, with his feet up on the desk, cigarette in one hand and cheap whisky in the other. 🙂

The story is such an incredibly well-plotted and clever web that I defy anyone to guess how it all pans out. It is a fantastically original, dark and shocking story but with enough recurring character banter to balance it out. This is an excellent second entry in the series.

I loved Close To Home and was really excited when I got my hands on In The Dark (what a clever title for this story!), if a little apprehensive wether it could live up to the quality of the first book. I didn't need to worry as it turned out to be even better. Totally gripping, tense and compelling from beginning to the very end; atmospheric setting of Oxford, believable characters, jaw dropping twists - this book has everything. This is police procedural at its best. I absolutely can't wait for the next instalment in this brilliant series.
