The ideal book for me, combining literature and teatime! Plenty of delicious-sounding recipes taken from or inspired by works such as Little Women or Alice in Wonderland.

A Literary Tea Party combines two of my very favorite things: baking and books. It has cute recipes to go along with several themes (children's, murder mystery, garden, etc) that also taste delicious. I'm also a huge fan of themed parties and really love the idea of bringing back tea parties to enjoy.

This is a great recipe book filled with unique recipes for different type of book events. The author makes it easy to plan a menu around any of the books she mentions. Great book for book clubs or those that like to do themed cooking.

This was an interesting book. I am always fascinated by food mentioned in literature and I have tried my hand at baking fictional treats more than once, so I was very curious to see what was included in this cook book.

At first glance, I could see that the book included beautiful photography and very nice pairings of food with tea and other delicious-sounding drinks. In general, the recipes were easy to follow and the text accompanying them was fun to read.

My only but would be that I was not really inspired to actually bake these treats. I am not a bit fan of most of the stories included and although I enjoyed reading this book and having a look at all the beautiful images, there weren't any recipes that really jumped at me.

However, there were definitely plenty of ideas if you are planning on throwing a cute literary party. This is something that did get me excited and if end up doing it, I would go back to this book for sure.

A book that changed my afternoon. I am used to a cup of coffee and a book, suddenly rising because of this book. I imagine in a small, simple and charming garden. Enjoy a romantic tea party and not many people. Yes, I want a tea party like this.
Behind that all these books present concepts of recipes that can be practiced. Quotes of books and photos that make the book too beautiful to read. I want to go inside and enjoy a long holiday. This is a very touching and adorable book. Even for me who is not used to tea parties

You have to love a cookbook that was inspired by a blogger (!) who was asked to turn her "Alison's Wonderland Recipes" blog into a book. And if you're a book geek as well as a tea lover, this charming cookbook is a must for your library.

The author has created recipes for teatime foods and beverages inspired by classic literature, including favorites like Anne of Green Gables and The Wizard of Oz and Little Women. For those who enjoy hosting themed tea parties, the author helpfully includes menus for entire themed teas, such as Alice's Mad Tea Party, Aslan's Feast (inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia), and Murder Most Delicious: A Detective Tea Party, which features recipes inspired by Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie. As a writer, I thoroughly enjoyed a couple of the author's observations about food in books. She writes, "If we pay close attention, we'll notice that bread in books is rarely eaten alone. Instead, it is almost always shared, be it among family at a dinner table or fireside companions on a lonely trail." She also notes that desserts "are often connected to characters' emotions." How intriguing!

This is such a clever idea for a cookbook, and I found quite a few recipes I want to try. The Blood Orange Scones (from "The Five Orange Pips" by Arthur Conan Doyle ) are going to be tempting once blood oranges are in season, and Arrietty's Mini Cherry Cakes (from The Borrowers by Mary Norton) are so elegant (and easy!) that I can already see these on my table at a Christmas tea.

A Literary Tea Party gives you all you need to host a large or small tea party, but not only that these recipes are also great for everyday baking and cooking right to your own table. Recipes are simple and easy to follow. Oh, and as a tea lover, this book gives you a lot of tea flavors that you’ll love again and again. I was totally surprised how well this book was written.

Put it to you this way, as a book reviewer off of Netgalley we don’t get to keep the book, so I am staying a lot here when I say I myself will be grabbing a copy for myself.

If you love nostalgic, tea, baking and cooking this one is for you.

I really enjoyed this cookbook. The author has created tea party recipes from some of your favorite books. The recipes range from very simple to more time consuming ones but the instructions are clear and easy to understand. I agree that more guidance is needed for novice tea drinkers. Have fun with this book. Invite a few friends over, Brew some tea, make a few snacks, and discuss your favorite reads. This book will make a great gift for any literary chef. Enjoy

What a fantastic book! I liked the literary angle to these recipes, since I am a total book nerd. The pictures were lovely and many of the items were quite good. I highly recommend this book to any bookish nerd who also enjoys tea.

This is filled with fun and interesting recipes that go along with classic books. I like that you can choose one recipe and build a party or get together on that, or you can throw together a few recipes and have a general literary themed party. The recipes were easy enough to read through and there was enough variety to feel like it wasn't repeating itself.

I will say this now: I love this book! It is fabulous! It gives recipes and advise about having afternoon tea inspired by many literary subjects, such as Dorothy, Sherlock Holmes, Alice in Wonderland and others. The food and teas for each party were inspired by different books. Each tea was picked out to match the characters and storyline. The food for the tea party, both the little sandwiches and pastries, also were picked out or made especially for the characters and the storyline, The recipes are very easy to follow, including the teas. And the pictures will make your mouth salivate over the wonderful treats! I personally love afternoon tea, with a different tea each time, some small sandwiches, and different pastries. Now I can have a theme for it, one that goes along with my love of reading and books. My recommendation: Buy this book right now. You won't regret it!

This was adorable! I was holding off on the review until I had some recipies made, but this book is so perfect and cute, it was hard to wait for the right occasion! Great for hosting your own Mad Tea Party.

Cute. I liked most of the recipes in here though I can't really see myself making them. Some of the literary connections were a bit of a stretch but overall it worked. I haven't tried most of them but I'll probably experiment with them in time. I think there are several I'll end up customizing simply because I'm not a fan or one or two ingredients.

That is truly a list of who’s who in the literary world. I devoured this book in one sitting and then went back to slowly digest it while I was making my grocery list so I would have the ingredients I needed to enjoy the book fully. Since we have tea time every afternoon I knew that some of these treats were going to be perfect for us. In fact, I have been making a different treat each afternoon to coordinate with the book we are reading. It has made a wonderful summer reading list for the kids while giving me some sweet treats.



My favorite so far has been Miss Marple’s “Pocket Full of Rye” Tea Sandwiches since I am huge fan of her books.The titles in the list each have multiple recipes so it will easy to plan and have a tea party. Alison Walsh did a wonderful job coming up with recipes and blends that she believes each and every character would love and enjoy. After re-reading several of the titles in the book I can certainly agree. Speaking of Miss Marple, I can’t wait to try the Delicious Death Chocolate Cake. I am more than certain it will be to die for!



While there are plenty of children’s tittles list this is certainly not a children’s recipe book. There are various difficulty levels for the recipes and they are certainly aimed at adults. Although there are things that children will enjoy. The tea party atmosphere is something that children love and they will certainly want to take part.I love that the book has some recipes that are based on one book while others are more themed from several books such as murder. Cute! I enjoyed this cookbook. It would be really fun to use for a book club after discussing one of the books mentioned in the book. I could also see using it to make food with a child after reading one of the books. I hope the author writes more of these and includes more books (Harry Potter, please)!

A Literary Tea: Party Blends and Treats for Alice, Bilbo, Dorothy, Jo, and Book Lovers Everywhere by Alison Walsh is a collection of literary-inspired recipes of savories, breads, and desserts, which are inspired by familiar children's classics. Enjoy a Beorn’s Honey Nut Banana Bread (The Hobbit) or delight your palate with Jo’s Gingerbread (Little Women), or Candied Flower Cookies (inspired by The Secret Garden). 

The food recipes are fairly clear, and range from simple to more complex. While most can be made with commonly-available ingredients, pans, and utensils, a few require more obscure tools, such as a mandoline, or ingredients you will only find in an upscale or gourmet grocery store. Cooks who prefer metric measures can relax; there are two handy conversion tables at the end, one for quantities and the other for oven temperatures.

This was a wonderful read and I can't wait to try some of these classic literature recipes. I recommend A Literary Tea Party for anyone looking to throw a literary party, or just curl up with a cup of tea, a good book, and the perfectly-paired snack.

I love tea party recipe books! This is one I want for my collection now that I have been able to see a copy. Alison Walsh's creations are perfect to make for a party, or just oneself. I am looking forward to creating her Scotch Eggs (The Horse and the Boy), Pahntom's Savory Apple Rose Tartlets (Phantom of the Opera), Cracked China Deviled Eggs ( Wizard of Oz) Arreittys' Mini Cherry cakes (The Borrowers), and oh, so, many more that would make such fine treats with tea (recipes of which are also included!).

A Literary Tea Party

A Literary Tea Party, subtitled Blends and Treats for Alice, Bilbo, Dorothy, Jo, and Book Lovers Everywhere, is a delightful book tantalizing the senses with beautiful color photos and delicious themed recipes. The Table of Contents categorizes the recipes into Savories, Bread and Muffins, Sweets, Homemade Tea Blends, and Tea Alternatives. Each recipe is then listed by its themed name and the book or author associated with it. For example, Savories includes Poetical Egg Salad Sandwich referring to Anne of Green Gables.

Although many of the books referenced are childhood favorites, this is not a children’s recipe book. The recipes are of various difficulty levels and although they generally are aimed at sophisticated tastes, the whole tea party atmosphere is so special it would entice children to sample something a little different. Most recipes include a photograph, a quote tying in the literary reference, a note about the recipe, a listing of ingredients, and clear directions followed by a serving note that again references the literary work. Sometimes important cooking notes are added and highlighted. For some recipes a tea pairing is included. There is also a section of the book which gathers five or six recipes together into a theme for a tea party. Some draw on recipes that refer to one book. Some refer to a theme such as murder and draw from a variety of authors.

The author, Alison Walsh, displays her creativity and artistic skills in the various dishes she shares as well as her photography. Walsh is a self-taught food blogger (Alison’s Wonderland Recipes) who also loves books. In the process of writing A Literary Tea Party, Walsh researched the science behind cooking and devoted herself to developing her culinary skills. The result is a beautiful book that any food lover or book lover would appreciate; it is a magnificent combination of culinary and literary interests immersed in a refined, but fun, atmosphere only achievable in a tea party setting.
