Perhaps it would have been better for the author to let Carter Jergen and Dubose be killed off by Sanjay and Tanuja using Hornet Spray. Then we wouldn't have had to read Carter Jergen or Dubose's names two hundred times or hundred times how one went to Princeton, and the other Harvard.
Just crazy to see a author just have two Characters like Carter Jergen and Dubose, who are unbelievable, made to be invincible they magically can do anything, track anything, mix in total bull shit by the author regarding the two and yet they don't get along.
Stephen King would have killed them off in the 2nd chapter of The Silent Corner, they'd been filler characters verse main ones and the two killed this one for me.
If the India twins couldn't kill Carter Jergen or Dubose, surely Gavin and Jessica Washington two veterans, with the author's words they where badass survived repeated tours, Jessica lost her legs, and Koontz throws a grenade. Then kills the Crooked Staircase for me with how they are killed.
Both Gavin and Jessica, knew their days in the house where number, prior to the drones and plains flying around . So why wouldn't have Gavin, have stocked up on nonperishable food. Especially since he checked in on his cousin every 3 months and that's Koontz's own words. When Gavin and Travis, who where out horseback riding, take Jessica's horse, they have a canyon that they can leave them in verse leaving them at home in stalls, Jessica brings the Range Rover, they leave, with their experience they close the back gate and make a clean getaway form Carter Jergen and Dubose.
Then the fighting scenes involving the Washington's being decorated Military Veterans, they would have killed both Carter Jergen, Dubose, blown the helicopter out of the sky, blown up the Truck and left everyone dead verse alive.
Yet Koontz got lazy it's easier to have Jane Hawk killing everything verse other characters being able to fight back against an elite group of people trying to control the masses and been harder for him to write. Although he took great delight in his two stooge characters Carter Jergen and Dubose.
At least no harm happened to either Duke and Queenie, the Washington's two German Shepards.
Definitely would love to have seen Mean Pete aka Peter Brandvold make his non-western debut and writing this one. Bet he'd have killed off Carter Jergen and Dubose in the first paragraph, made Jane Hawk badass lethal, Sanjay and Tanuja would be alive and join the battle with Jane, along with the Washington's, then have a five member lethal team fighting evil, and he wouldn't push the easy button so blatantly as Koontz.
Koontz just imploded the Jane Hawk Series by dummying it down, doing it the easy way verse a complex challenging read, and the first two books where so good.
Dean Koontz at his best. Lots of twist and turns that keeps you on your toes. Have read almost all his books, but this was outstanding. Thanks net galley for advance copy
This is book 3 in the Jane Hawk Series. Jane is still fighting the rash of murder-suicides that is plaguing the country. She is now a wanted woman. She must stay alive and out of harm so that she can solve the mystery of who actually killed her husband.
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Jane Hawk is still chasing the Arcadians, the group who has utilized nanotechnology to control people and eventually plan to control the government. She wants revenge for her husband, who was controlled and caused to commit suicide, and to make sure she and her son can again be safe. She is close, she thinks, to the top, but the enemy is close to finding Travis, her son.
And if they have him, they will control her without the nanotechnology.
Dean Koontz is the king of American novelists, and the entire Jane Hawk series is highly recommended.
This has been a fantastic series so far, and this book doesn't disappoint. I couldn't put it down. I hated that it ended on a cliffhanger, so I can't wait to read the next one.
I really enjoy Koonz's style of writing and always gravitate towards his books. The crooked staircase does not disappoint! I love this series! It keeps me on my toes and guessing. I highly recommend.
Everyone needs to read this series. It is that good. No spoilers but this one ended abruptly. Highly recommended.
Absolutely fantastic! Koontz continues to excite in this outstanding series. If you enjoy a faced paced thriller, this is for you.
Disclaimer: this is the only book in the series I’ve read. And while I was intrigued from page 1, it lost me near the end and I hated that it ended on a cliffhanger.
Jane is still trying to bring to justice the monsters that have had countless people killed, including her husband. She is up against a group of people who may be in the highest levels of the government. And they will stop at nothing to stop her. She finds help along the way, but she always makes sure that these helpers know what they could face. Death or worse than death awaits those who choose to help Jane in her quest. Can she stay ahead of her pursuers? Time will tell.
This book was ok however I found it to be extremely boring and I struggled getting into it. I expected so much more. I really wanted to love this one unfortunately that’s not the case.
Jane knows that she’s on borrowed time. She’s crossed some truly powerful, truly deranged people and knows that they, and all major law enforcement agencies, are hot on her trail. If she’s found, not one I’ll she not be able to complete her mission of exposing and stopping this terrible group and protecting her son, but she’ll be dead...or something worse than dead. Investigating the strange epidemic of murder suicides that has escalated across the country and claimed the life of her husband has put a target on her head and her son’s. Jane knows that the only way to stop this horrible group is to find proof of their horrendous actions and expose them to the world. Her pursuers can’t stop her from catching up to her selected prey: a cunning, twisted soul of a man with connections in high places in the organization she hopes to stop, who has an army of both professional and mindlessly obedient killers. She takes him to confront the forces on her trail and gain proof of their evil deeds. But, nothing can prepare her for everything she’ll face.
Wow! This book was even more suspenseful than the books that precede it! I honestly couldn’t put it down! Dean Koontz even managed to make me feel sorry for one of the real villains in this. What makes this series so scary is that it’s something that could plausibly happen, if not now, in the relatively near future. I’m not saying every aspect could occur but the main premise behind the suicides, could be invented. The whole idea behind mind control is truly terrifying. And Dean Koontz really does an amazing job of making you feel like you’re with Jane as she is on her journey. This series would make an awesome series of movies!
I am sorry for not reviewing fully but I don’t have the time to read this anymore. I believe that it wouldn't benefit you as a publisher or your book if I only skimmed it and wrote a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for not fully reviewing!
Unfortunately I could not write a fair review as I DNF this book as I hadn't read the others in the series which gave me a huge disadvantaged. I will give 5 stars to not negatively impact the author
Very mystifying, kept me on the edge of my seat. Love it. Devour it up with every page I turned. Pushed me to know more, to read on til the very end. It got me right where it counted.
Jane Hawk is on the hunt for her husband's murderer. His death was set up as a suicide but she knows it can't be true. If you like suspense this one is for you.
This was my first Dean Koontz book and the first of this Jane Hawk series for me. I see that there have been two books prior to this book, but to be honest I was able to connect relationships and understand the threat that Jane is dealing with being on the FBI’s most wanted list without reading the other two books.
I will continue with the series and hope for a happy ending!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ebook copy for an honest review.
I have enjoyed Dean Koontz books in the past, I am sorry to say that was not the case for “The Crooked Staircase” and I am over this series.
Mr. Koontz has crafted a good story, and there are plenty of thriller elements to it. Sometimes this worked, but the constant flipping felt hyper after a while.
However, what really turned me off was the cliffhanger-like ending. Creating a successful series that goes on and on has been done but there should be a semi-conclusion, I guess I will never find out what happens to Jane Hawk, because my interest died with the book three non-ending. This is my biggest gripe with most YA books...non endings so you are forced to read the next book.
Wasn't what I was expecting. Not the koontz I'm used to. I think he should go back to his horrific roots!!
