This was so much better than I could have anticipated! The first book ends on a major cliffhanger, so I was skeptical heading into this installment. But, you get to know the characters so much more, and the twists and turns in the plot really kept the story moving. The first half was a little slow, but the final half is worth it! The plot in this one was highly original, and nothing (absolutely nothing) was predictable.
Emmet develops into a complex and even more interesting character, while we also get to see how being on a new planet affects the rest of the crew. I cannot wait for the next book!
This book .. oh this book. I was foaming at the mouth to get to this book after finishing the first one, and boy did it live up to my expectations. The first book completely blew me away, but Nyxia Unleashed? This takes the cake. The world building and characters are so three dimensional, it's like I was on Eden with Emmett. I could relate to his internal struggles, to his relationships with the other characters, and most of all with his desire to overcome the corporation that is Babel. I was on the edge of my seat until the very last page and am VERY MUCH looking forward to the next installment.
This ARC was provided to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is trying to kill me.. HECK this series is going to be the death of me right now.
Nyxia Unleashed WAS AMAZING GUYS! Okay, so the first book Nyxia was addictingly good. So when I saw that I could potentially get the ARC for the second book?!? I gave all my three wishes to my imaginary genie for this book.. AND THEN I GOT IT! I was so happy! Again, this book was AAHHMMAZZZINGGG.
[In Nyxia Unleashed you follow Genesis Teams 11 and 12 on their journey to Eden. While working alongside the Adamites, these teams find out why they were really sent to Eden. Seriously, this book was mindblowingly good. Don't believe everything you see.. because there's more than meets the eye. This book gives you so many twists and turns. I was screaming at so many points within so many chapters. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE GUYS SAW A MOTION CENSOR AND STILL WENT IN THE TUNNEL!??! Like really?!?! I know you saw it. You mentioned it. You ignored it. Your ass got a gun drawn on you. BOYS ARE STUPID!
Overall, this story was amazing! I hated the cliffhanger because now I have to wait even longer for another book! I loved getting to know more about Emmett and everyone else he works with. I enjoyed all of the new characters and this clinging-to-the-edge-of-my-seat storyline. I'm so happy that I got a chance to read this book. I hope I get the chance to read the next one.. whenever it comes out. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE HELL IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT!
“We hope that this will be the first step in a long and meaningful relationship."
After the fierce competition, the survivors of Genesis 11 are launched into space. The next part of their journey begins on the planet Eden. Our protagonist, Emmett Attwater has won his battle and a chance to earn his money on Eden. But his mind always wanders back to those left behind.
The new recruits are divided into three teams to harvest the Nyxia. They all had to pass Babel’s tests. In a team competition, the contestants were pitted against each other. And this resentment has funneled its way down from the Genesis onto the planet. But these young recruits will have to work together as unbeknownst to them there will be challenges that will arise on the new land. This is especially true after the initial greetings with the Adamites of Sevenset. Babel has not been entirely forthcoming about what to expect on the new terrain. And nor have the Adamites.
“All of you are here to restore a world our people have forgotten.”
The story continues right where it left off seamlessly. The tension is high and we are about to embark on a thrilling and fast-paced drama. The relationships have changed, the simulations are now real, and the interactions of unearthly creatures are bewildering.
The world building of Eden is extraordinary. The two moons shining light upon the land unveil the dangerous landscapes of the continent of Grimgarden. Creatures are predatorial and abundant in the darkest hours. Mystical beasts include feathered monkies that can cloak themselves and rare centuries that can evolve with time. The seven rings of Sevenset are an elaborate landscape on the sea. The innermost sanctum harbors the daughters of the throne. But once again, there is more than meets the eye.
Reintgen did not miss a beat in the creation of the second installment of the Nyxia triad. It was not just a continuation, but a re-creation of the story. Many twist and turns will keep the reader gripping tightly to the book (or my case kindle). As the group of young miners uncovers the darker mysteries of Babel’s role on Eden, they will weave tighter together to ensure they will see the light of day on earth.
“Shoulder to Shoulder to stand”
My only criticism of the narrative is that we only get a taste of the other character’s past. To understand Longwei’s determination to be a chosen one for Babel and to see a young man trying to find worth through a parent’s eye was very poignant. I would have loved to see the more added depth to the characters, especially the loathsome ones. However, the main character Emmett Atwater continues to endear our heart and we see him emerge valiantly from his past. And other characters will brave the dark side to forge the recruits safety.
Nyxia Unleashed was not only entertaining but a novel that exceeded my expectations for a sequel. The ending chapters are exciting and well played out with a hook that will keep the reader wanting more. And now I wait for the final installment.
Thank you, NetGalley, Random House Children’s, and Scott Reintgen for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Ok I had read the first in this series and felt i had to read this one as well. I think this was better written than the first book. I was able to get into it and involved with what the characters were dealing with. Overall I'd say this was really good.
Where the first book in this series leans more on the competition between the recruits, Nyxia Unleashed introduces us to Eden, its inhabitants, and how Emmett and the other recruits learn to trust each other and become a family of sorts.
The world-building is exquisite and explained well. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Eden along with the characters. Much time is spent on describing this world, its culture, and people, which can seem like filler (as is the case with many second books in a series), but I feel like that in-depth knowledge is needed to understand the stakes these characters are facing and the reasoning behind their choices.
As with Nyxia, diverse, fully realized characters continue to be a strong point with this series. With the competition over, the recruits are able to relax a bit and allow relationships to grow and develop. Unexpected twists are sprinkled throughout, and although pacing lagged a bit in the first quarter of the book, the last quarter is filled with nearly nonstop action. Bring on book 3!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital ARC.
As much as I love this series, I wish I had waited to get into it until the conclusion was out. I just hate cliff-hangers. That being said, I enjoyed this just as much as the first. This series is action-packed and doesn't let up. This book starts right where the last ended and there is not a single dull moment. With all of the mystery of the first, this one continuously throws curve balls your way and reveals what's truly going on pretty late in the book. There's a bit of swearing and some implied sexual content although it's safe enough for an elementary school student, except for the violence. The violence definitely makes this more of a teen novel with a few heart-breaking, but semi-graphic scenes. It might just be that I expected it but I didn't feel like they were as graphic as the first novel, although they probably were. It is definitely the violence that makes this a mid- to older-teen novel. It's definitely a series to check out though!
I would like to thank the publisher, author, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Nyxia Unleasehd continues the story of Emmett and his teammates when they reach the planet where they are to mine Nyxia. But as the teens have come to expect, Babel is keeping secrets from them and nothing is as it seems.
I did not enjoy this book near as much as I liked the first one. The first reason is that it's a different kind of book; there is less action as they reach the alien planet. But what time could have spent on the culture of the aliens is really spent on the recycled ideas of who is betraying them without any depth. I was more interested in the side story and what was going on there. It had tension and suspense.
The ending has great build up and starts to read like the first book. because of that excitement, I want to read the third one.
** I received a e-arc of Nyxia:Unleashed via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own! **
A great follow up to Nyxia, which was one of my favorite reads of last year. Though I did enjoy the first book more, Nyxia: Unleashed stands on its own. The pace does lag a bit in the beginning as the world is set up, but I was soon hooked. At times Nyxia: Unleashed felt like a bridge between the first and third book, but I didn’t mind it at all. The second book spends some more time on the characters, which was much needed after all the second-half introductions in the first book. Now that all the characters have more depth, the twists, turns, and deaths have more of an impact this go around.
4 Stars!
Ever since I heard about Nyxia, I knew I was going to love it. As soon as I read the first, I never wanted to leave this world. Nyxia Unleashed topped the first and more. I fell in love even more and I don't know if I can wait for the third.
If you've been following me for any amount of time you will know how much Nyxia by Scott Reintgen quickly became one of my favorite books of 2017. So you'll know how excited I was to receive Nyxia Unleashed in exchange for an honest review. If you have not read Nyxia this post will contain mild spoilers for the first book in the series, Nyxia.
Nyxia Unleashed follows Genesis teams 11 and 12 while they navigate their new surroundings following completing Babel's challenges to secure their spots on the journey to Eden. They begin working with the Adamites, uncovering more information as to why they were really sent to Eden, all while mining Nyxia for Babel. The story is a whirlwind from the very beginning, which is no shock considering how the first novel ended. Nothing is what it seems and I loved all the plot twists in the book. I wasn't able to predict any of the plot changes and thuroughly enjoyed following Emmett and the rest of the team throughout the story. 5|5 (no surprise)
I adored Eden. I found it both interesting and terrifying. A waste land filled with alien animals with unique abilities. In the later parts of the book I became even more interested in their world. I felt like the world was a big part of this book and I loved how Scott made it a central focus of this story. 5|5
Now let me just take a moment to talk about characters. By a moment I mean forever, because Scott created some amazing characters. Honestly even the ones you're supposed to hate you end up loving. Emmett is our main character and the story is primarily told from his point of view. I find him daring, kind, level headed, and seriously so enjoyable that I wish he could be the main character in every book I read. File that under D for Dreamy. We also have some amazing female lead characters as well as stunning supporting characters. Morning is easily the coolest most bad ass character of this book, because unlike in other novels she's realistically awesome. I loved the way the characters form a family in a way. All the different types of people in their group really helped me fall even more in love with this book. They stayed true to themselves while also growing as one does when they begin to realize everything isn't what it seems. 5|5
I really felt like the continuity, pacing, and Scott's writing styles really all worked perfectly together. The story flowed very well, I didn't experience any lagging. Scott's writing is both simple and descriptive. I never found myself lost at points and I never once had to re-read anything. When I had responsibilities and had to set the book down I didn't come back to the story lost. I would give each of these points 5|5
That ending though y'all. It ruined me in the most spectacular way. I need the third book now and Nyxia Unleashed isn't even out yet. Although according to Scott's website (itspronouncedrankin.com) he's begun revision so I am hopeful! I felt like while simultaneously answering every single question I had throughout the book it left me needing the third book, if only to find out what happens to all the characters! 5|5
I have grown so fond of the world and characters Scott has created. I cannot wait to see how he brings everything to a close. When it comes to enjoyment I would think it's pretty obvious that I gave this book 5|5 despite spending a good 4th of the book crying.
I would like to thank NetGalley for sending me a review copy of this book but as always every opinion expressed here is my own honest opinion. If you'd like to pre-order this book you can do so here (and obviously I would highly recommend you do so: Amazon. You can also find Nyxia on Amazon is well if you're interested in reading the series.
Scott Reintgen did not disappoint with his sophomore novel in the Nyxia Triad. The intricate world building he exemplifies along with his complex and amazing characters that we have grown to know and love combine to bring the world of Eden to life. A nonstop adventure from beginning to end, Nyxia Unleashed has me ready to find out more while also never wanting this story to end.
I have been waiting (very impatiently!!!) for the second Nyxia book to come out. I am not going to lie I desperately want to read book three!!
Book two picks up right where Nyxia left off. I don't want to give to much away because this is a fast paced book with a lot of twists and turns. Who survived leaving the Babel ship and the trip to Eden? The crew finds out that they are stuck between both Babel and the Adamites. They need to sort through all the lies and figure out where their loyalties lie.
This is a phenomenal series and I absolutely cannot recommend it enough!! Read this series!!
Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC. 5/5 stars.
AHHHH! I have to wait a whole YEAR for the third book?!?!?!
This book is amazing! Great representation, compelling story, and a ton of adventure! I loved the first book and this one was even better. I have incredibly high hopes for book #3.
UGH I'M SO UPSET WITH MYSELF FOR FINISHING THIS because it was SO EXCELLENT and I don't even know what to DO with the world now. (Maybe read my Backman? Okay, there are worse situations to be in.)
This was super delightfully pacey also. I have had zero free time to read because I've been hanging out with people and I think these people have become annoyed with me because they'll walk away for five seconds and come back and have me not talk to them because I'm suddenly absorbed in finding out if everyone's gonna die (LIFE LESSON: KEEP NYXIA IN YOUR SHOE. OKAY? Yes, I mean the book, what do you think I'm talking about?)
I do wish that I had reread the first before I had read this because I remembered adoring all the characters and... of course, I couldn't remember any of them. I enjoyed getting to know them all more, and characters like Isadora really brought some excitement, but I kind of want to take notes now for when I read book three. I didn't often forget that they were teenagers, which was nice--they're quirky and playful and resilient and I want to be friends with them all.
This didn't feel as much like ENDER'S GAME as a more sci-fi dystopian book--most of it takes place on the new planet and there's a lot of world building. I would have liked more, but what was there was very well thought out and intriguing. I want to learn more, and I loved all the culture and history built in.
Some plot points felt too well planned... but who'm I to criticise alien species for being smart?
The cliffhanger, while having significantly more on the line than the last, wasn't half as bad. Thank goodness. But I still want the final installment right now!
I'm reminded why I am going to shove my copy of NYXIA down everyone's throats because everyone needs to love this book.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Crown, this one was one of my most anticipated books of the year!
I received an ARC copy from netgalley for my honest review, so thank you netgalley and publishers for offering me this book! ♡
This story is a followup to Nyxia. We get to meet the Adamites in this book. The conspiracy theories are bigger amd better then ever. I can't really say too much without spoiling the first book.
This was my second book by this author, It was just as amazing as the first! It was all together an easy read. ♡ I give this book a
4.5 star rating!
"Fallen angels were cast down to earth and became demons. When Babel casts us out, it's in fire and blood and steel."
SCOTT HAS DONE IT AGAIN. I have never been so wholly impressed with a writing style, story, progression, and characters. I loved that this book set the stage for forging the friendships that will bring Babel down!
"I sit there long after she falls asleep, thinking about the family we’ve forged, not through blood, but through steel and chaos."
I couldn't put it down. I almost don't know what to say because I've now read both books in the series so far and I can't gush enough without feeling like I am spoiling something. Every word feels important. And that's the reason I'm sure this will be my favorite read of 2018.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Yes! This was such an amazing followup to Nyxia. We finally get to meet the Adamites. The conspiracy theories only get bigger. And so many cute Emmett/Morning scenes. There's even a few POV chapters from other characters which I really hope we get more of in the last book.
Why not 5 stars? There were some really cool plot developments that looked like the were going to go somewhere, but that never did, and that never will. While I loved what I read, I feel like I missed out on some really cool stuff the book teases you with.
YAY BOOK TWO!! I loved the first one so much, this most certainly didn't disappoint. Wow is all I can really say, I don't want to give any spoilers for the series. If you love sci-fi please just check this series out. As always thankyou for Netgalley for providing a copy for my honest review.
This series just keeps getting better with each book, can't wait to see what happens next. With that said I would like to say thinks to Netgalley for give me the chance at reading and review Nyxia Unleashed in chance for my honest opinion.
