I finished The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain last night and woke up this morning sad that I could not read more of the story. I love, love, loved this book and highly recommend it, it hooked me from the very beginning and I truly did not want to put it down. I also read it without reading the description blurb, just based on being a Diane Chamberlain fan, and am so glad I did because if I had known one of the "modes of transportation" (I'll call it that), I would have passed right on by. I am not into science fiction, fantasy, or those types of genres and felt the handling of what happened in this book was just perfect for how everything was supposed to be and worked out, I don't want to say too much and give anything away. It was incredibly interesting and full of twists that made me keep coming back eager to find out more about Carly and the love for her baby. I guess I do not need to repeat that I recommend reading this book, but will just to make sure you at least consider it. Do not stop reading when you find out the mode of transportation, it is so worth the journey.
I gave a review for this amazing book already on here. This is actually the second book I seen so far that I have already gave a review for. Are you not recording them?
This was a beautiful and affecting book that I considered long after I finished reading it. The book tells the story of a woman who has the chance to go forward in time to give her baby life-saving surgery that's currently not been invented in the year in which she lives. It's not as implausible as it sounds. Can you back? How do you go back? What do you do with the knowledge of the future you've learned? These and other ethical issues are addressed with a sensitive hand. I really loved this book and highly recommend it.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Diane Chamberlain has delivered a sit on the edge of your seat novel in THe Dream Daughter. Taking place in the present and the past, the story seamlessly weaves a tale of motherly love. Caroline Sears is pregnant, it is 1970, her husband was sent off to Vietnam and she recently learned her unborn daughter has a heart defect that is untreatable. However, her brother in-law, Hunter, knows of an option that might save her daughter, but it involves risk, trust and suspended belief. Hunter introduces the idea of time travel to Caroline and once she is on board, the story takes off with many twists and turns. Along the way there was a lot of angst as I read the book - as a mom, I cannot imagine what Caroline was going through making health decisions by herself for her unborn and subsequently, newborn daughter. Through in some date miscalculations for time travel, communication mishaps and relationship testing, the story will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions, finally settling in for an unpredictable yet appropriate ending.
A complex story that elicits many emotions. Diane Chamberlain never disappoints. Another must read if you are a fan of her work!
I really enjoyed this story. It was a bit confusing a few times because the circumstances were so unbelievable, but it was still fun to read. I have never read time travel done in quite this style. I loved the way that they time traveled, how and where they went. I loved the family connection. I liked all of the characters and thought the book was imaginative and well written.
*Thank you to Diane Chamberlain, Netgalley, and the publisher, for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book.
Characters were so relatable. I love her stories. They suck you in from the beginning and don't let you go. One sitting reads are my favorite!
Time travel is usually not my favorite reading but this book takes readers on a journey. The book flowed very well, keeps readers engaged and the characters and story line want you wanting more!
The year is 1970 and widowed Caroline Sears is pregnant. Her unborn daughter has a heart defect that can't be fixed in 1970. Her brother-in-law thinks he can send her for help, but the time and location are not conventional. Desperate to save her daughter, she agrees to his plan. What follows is the heart wrenching and moving story of what a mother will do to save her child.
The author is a gifted story teller and she has crafted a memorable novel. Highly recommended.
This was very different than her usual works, but it was still very good. I enjoyed the typical Chamberlain writing as she pulls at those heart strings. She is one of my favorite authors.
Wow Diane, you never fail to please! 4 1/2-5 stars
I have been reading Diane Chamberlain’s books for quite a few years now and I get so very excited when I know there will be a new book released! (They have also been released around my birthday so for me that is extra special!
I found this was definitely a fantastic unputdownable novel- Diane Chamberlain you have done it again!!
I truly admire Diane and am inspired by the way she appears to take risks and pushes the boundaries with each and every book she has written.
This novel crosses genres that I hadn't really anticipated, this is where I feel Diane took a chance and created a captivating story that also included time travel, something a bit different to most of her other novels and could possibly have had her regular readers wondering.....
“The Dream Daughter" is a beautifully written story that encompasses love, family, courage and the amazing power of a mother’s love for her child.
I have to say this is, without a doubt, definitely another brilliant novel by a truly amazing and talented author. The unique story captured my imagination, whilst each and every character captured my heart and soul.
I highly recommend this novel, and I really hope that everyone who reads it loves it & gets as much pleasure out of it as I did. I am so tremendously grateful to have had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of “ The Dream Daughter ” and thank St Martain's Press for allowing me to do so in exchange for an honest review. I most definitely am able to hand sell this novel at work and thank Diane also for yet another outstanding novel.
I was a bit surprised that this book involved time travel and I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but Chamberlain once again surprised m
My favorite book read in 2018!
I listened to the audio and let out a gasp, and my eyes welled up near the end. Pure fiction. Just lovely. It was more than I hoped for in a time travel novel.
There are few things I love more than a good time travel novel. I think I’ve probably read almost every time travel novel ever written. Some are more successful than others, some seem too unbelievable and some are just so well written, you really believe it could happen. Happily The Dream Daughter is definitely in the later category!
The novel opens up in 1965 with Carly. Carly is a physical therapist and she is about to be assigned a new patient. Carly is warned against a patient named Hunter Poole. He refuses to talk, won’t cooperate, and they think that he may have broken his ankle attempting suicide when he fell off a three story building.
Suddenly he looks up, practically shouts that he wants to work with Carly. He calms down and pleads with her to work with him, he even smiles.
Carly begins working with Hunter. He is making progress. One day when a brand new song by a new group called The Beatles comes on the radio, Hunter begins singing along. Carly can’t understand how he knows the words. it’s brand new. It’s kind of odd, but then Hunter is kind of odd.
Carly thinks that he would be perfect for her sister, Patti.
The novel then jumps to 1970. Carly is at the National Institutes of Health Bethesda, Maryland. She is there with her sister Patti. She has just learned that her unborn baby girl has a heart defect. A heart defect that in 1970, they can not do anything about.
I enjoyed this novel. I thought the storyline was great. The characters were well developed. As usual, Diane Chamberlain does not disappoint.
I received an ARC of the book.
The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain is a fascinating novel. I love reading psychological thrillers which is what I thought this was. And as a rule, I stay away from time traveling novels. I was surprised to discover so much of both in this novel. And I was most surprised at how much I loved it! I highly recommend this novel. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
I can always count on Diane Chamberlain’s books to be a good solid read. I enjoyed this book, but some of the plot points where a little too unbelievable.
Dream Daughter is my first Diane Chamberlain book so I cannot speak to how this book fits in with her other work. All I can say is that her words move you and her characters touch you in a way that feels like family.
Carly Sears is a young woman about to give birth after losing her husband in the Vietnam War. She receives word that the baby has a fatal heart defect. After seeking multiple second opinions it seems as if there is nothing the doctors can do. That is until she is approached by her brother-in-law Hunter who is a physicist familiar with the mechanics of time travel. Despite her scepticism and fear, Carly's love for her unborn child drives her to travel into the future in hopes of finding a cure for her baby. What ensues is a story is a story of love, faith and sacrifice. I admit I cried at times. Beautiful story.
I haven’t read a time travel book that I have liked in a long time. It took me a while to get into the story, but once I did, I couldn’t put this one down. I wanted to find out of Carly was reunited with her daughter and the twist at the end made the book even better.
Going into The Dream Daughter I didn't really know what to expect. The synopsis doesn't really tell the reader much and, truthfully, I think that is for the best. The time travel aspect may deter you but I think you should give it a chance because it is woven through the storyline in a wonderful way.
Caroline Sears has faced her fair share of difficulties and now with a baby on the way, she finds out that her daughter has a heart defect. Completely heartbroken from the news she is left wondering what to do. Caroline finds herself with several difficult decisions to make. I felt so much compassion for her and felt that the character development here was amazing.
This was a rollercoaster of emotions but I enjoyed the ride!
I LOVE Diane Chamberlain and was excited to read this...but then I wasn't. I kept having to force myself to go back to it and I was so confused because she is one of my go-to authors.
I kept on trying to get through this over a period of maybe 4 months. It got better and interesting but it is NOT her best work....but she has a lot of wonderful ones.
