I am a long time romance and erotica reader. So you can guess that I have read a lot of romance and there have been a huge number of threesomes and ménages among them. I am also a fan of Opal Carew’s work. She has a story for every possible fantasy and is able to bring those to life in the most vivid and tantalising way. I really and truly wanted to enjoy and like this book, but Abi, the heroine, must be one of the most self-serving, self-centred and annoying women I have ever come across. She has no principals and frankly I am very doubtful that she has any morals. I honestly felt very sorry for the two men in her life, Liam and Del, and couldn’t for the life of me understand what they saw in her. Her only goal seems to be physical fulfilment and pleasure with no regard to who she hurts emotionally in the process. I am all for women being sexually liberated and asking for what they want and need in bed, but Abi is simply out of control and I found myself being disturbed by her careless and selfish manner.
The ending was the only good part of this book. It was the only part where I could actually see some feeling and emotion rather than just lust. I would give “X Marks the Spot” 2.5 stars but will be rounding it up to 3 only because I know that Opal Carew is capable of much better.
X Marks the Spot by Opal Carew
Abi is conflicted…there are two men she has “loved” and one she has married then separated from. She believes she is ready to move on to the one she knows she has loved all along but is she really ready to give up the man she has been separated from for two years? This is a story of three people finding a way to be together that works for all of them. That said, I did not relate to any of them and really can’t see why Liam or Del found Abi so special. The believability factor was not high and characters were not that well developed. Mostly it was a vehicle for a steamy ménage story.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for the ARC – This is my honest review.
2-3 Stars
This is the type of sensuality you've come to expect from this author. With a refreshing, fast moving read, love the twist and you get three times the pleasure!!!
This book!!! It started out conflicted, but by the end...HOT HOT HOT!!! Loved Abi, Liam and Del and was glad they were able to find a solution and HEA.
I really wanted to love this book, as I’ve enjoyed many of Opal Carew’s books; unfortunately the last few reads of Ms Carew’s just haven’t lived up to expectations. This storyline was a fail and the characters were weak and unlikeable, this led to me skimming quite a bit. I hope this writing isn’t the standard we can expect in the future.
This redeemed itself and pulled out a 4 star rating at the end only because of the end, until then it was a solid 2-3. Abi is so messed up and immature it is a wonder she is a functioning adult. Okay, maybe that is a little strong but that is what came across. After miscarrying and her husband Liam not coddling her she runs home. That is basically what I got from it. He lost that baby too and she turned from him just as much as he did her. Okay, Del, who is friends with both, stands by her and she develops feelings for him. After a separation of 2 years Abi wants a divorce but Liam is still in love with his wife and doesn't want one but she is not willing to give it a go. The chemistry is still strong between them and when they find themselves in bed together, yes, together, the sparks are just as strong and even though the doctor told her she would never get pregnant again, that one night produced a pregnancy. What does Abi do, runs to Del. Geez Louise! Enough spoilers for me. Read the book. This is a great afternoon read for hot sex and will they or won't they and can they or not. The ending is what makes it salvageable for me and makes me glad I read it all they way through!

DNF.....
I really tried to give this book a fair shot and read it all the way through. This saddens me to say but I had to give this book up.. The blurb and cover made it look like a promising read not to mention I've read and really enjoyed books by Opal Carew in the past but this novel jumps character point of views to damn much making it hard to understand what is going on and resulting in lack of character connections.
I tried....I really tried.
X Marks the Spot was an interesting story that not only features a ménage situation, but also a bit of a taboo subject too.
And whilst it was an intriguing situation, having Abi in love with her estranged husband and his best friend. It just didn't really work for me. Yet it did draw me in, and for the most part it held my interest.
However, I felt the story was very rushed and I found it really hard to connect to these characters, especially Abi. But it was a hot read, and I'm sure anyone who has enjoyed similar stories would enjoy this one too.
And as a new author to me, I would certainly check out more of Opal Carews books in the future.
Ugh, I really wanted to like this book. The sexy times are super hot, but the story was so unrealistic and the female MC so naive and needy that I couldn’t really enjoy it.
I received a free ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I had a hard time reviewing this book because I had a hard time finishing this too.
Although, I have to say this, there are triggers from this book.
Going back, I was unsure of how the author will play the story out and if ever she crosses the line, will she be able to pull it off without making her book appear trashy? As much as I was unsure, I was curious too.
Carew was probably trying to make her heroine appear "torn between two lovers", but sadly, the heroine ended up looking and acting slutty. She (the heroine) doesn't have a self-restraint in her and she's very indecisive that I'm slowly getting annoyed by her. I'm trying to understand her, put myself in her place but she just made it impossible for me.
The heroes, both of them however, love her so much. Whatever they saw in the heroine, probably an added wonders of the world. Again, IMO.
Don't get me wrong, others seem to enjoy this. I thought I don't have a limitation when it comes to a story however dark and naughty and dirty and evil-ish it may seem. I'm proven wrong. There's always a first time, after-all.
The sex scenes were average enough in my opinion. Maybe because I've read tons of menage a trois that it's going to be real hard to impress me, I guess.
Writing stories like these for me is crucial. Not only it is a trigger read but it also tackles sensitive issue since technically, the heroine is married still. It's a hard pill to swallow. There were stories that works out well for the characters even if they are married to another that will justify their actions. Here, I didn't really understand her. The reason of the separation was given but it still doesn't appear pleasant for my taste.
And then the author finally, finally made a solution for her characters, and again I was left astounded.
Seriously,
I'm happy for the author to finally give a HEA for all of the parties involve.
But.
I honestly don't know how did that work out for them.
Points to the author for trying to delve fora story as this that actually probably happens somewhere out there. This isn't just for me. It all went against every bit of what I believe.
I rate this book 2.5 but I'll place it on 3 stars because despite of my issues, if you're able to get past those, this book will work just fine for you.
Will I recommend this book? Sure. I believe that everyone's got their own opinion and that you'll really never know it unless you read the book first. Experience the book. Learn from it. You may love it or hate it, but at least in the end, it's yours to have and remember.
I normally really like Opal Carew. She writes about discovering sexuality in a very affirming way and enjoying life even if it's in a non-traditional way. This book sucked. The characters were unlikable and the wishy-washy attitude the h had toward both men was disrespectful. Try again.
I have read several books by this author and have enjoyed them all. This one was kind of a disappointment. I really did not like Abi, she just came across as indecisive and slutty. I really could not connect with any of the characters. I do look forward to reading more from this author.
X Marks the Spot by Opal Carew was a tangled romance story. The story was well written, but the female character was a mess. I did not relate with her thought processes and that she could not make up her mind between the two men. Her character was the only negative part of the story. I enjoyed the steamy sex scenes and once the three of them got together it flowed better.
Opal Carew never fails to bring the heat. X Marks the Spot in another superb story that actually has a well-founded plot. Great job all around with the story, romance and heat!
I did not enjoy this books it was too similar as other books by this author
X Marks the Spot - Opal Carew
I’ve read other books by Opal Carew and love the heat she puts into them but unfortunately this one was a little light on the heat and strong on the frustration.
Though a great premise and blurb, which by the way was what hooked me, the interplay between Abi, Del and Liam though necessary to the story, just frustrated the hell out of me.
Liam just made it a competition to win back his Ex in Abi and all Abi really wanted was to follow through on her long term crush on Del. Well I guess it was quite a good love triangle.
Characters were well written, story had merit but I struggled at times to be invested in it entirely.
Hasn’t dampened my love for Carew Books though.
Thank you to St Martins Press for the opportunity to review through Netgalley.
I requested this ARC with a promise that I would give a fair and honest review. If you are in the least uncomfortable with scorching heat and eroticism that is NOT vanilla then this book is not for you. However, if you are not of the fainthearted nature and really like unbelievably spicy hot anything BUT vanilla then this is your book!!
I've read several of Opal Carews books. This was not in line with what we've gotten in the past. I just couldn't get over Abi, seriously how could going back and forth be a good idea. Just made her really unlikable and honestly Liam deserved better.
Abi has always had feelings for Del. But because he was her brother's best friend he never pursued anything with her. He introduced her to his best friend Liam and she fell in love and married him. Now Abi and Liam are separated and headed for a divorce. Del has been there for her throughout her marital ordeal. Abi decides to finally go after what she wants and plans to seduce Del. Her plans go sideways when she ends up in bed with Liam. Liam does not want a divorce and plans to do whatever he needs to do to convince Abi to give them another chance.
Del finally makes his move on Abi. But things take a new turn when Abi decides she wants Liam as well as Del. A very sizzling relationship develops between the two. Will Abi have to make a choice between the two?
Opal Carew is a writer I totally enjoy reading and this book did not disappoint! I would recommend it to friends and people who don’t know me as well! Read it and enjoy every word!
