I read a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I did enjoy this novel. The intensity kept my interest throughout the entire plot, so much so that I was reading when I should have been more productive. There were a few points where I think some important details may have been left out, or mistakenly assumed for the reader, to the extent that I actually went back and reread some of the book to see what I may have missed. The answer was that I had missed nothing. The most glaring example of this was the introduction of a secondary character who seemed to be just a foreshadowed notation. I had to review the chapter depicting the debut of this young lady, Emily, to determine how so much information became available about her. From what I read, it appeared that the girl had only been questioned and was again out of the picture. This was not the case. This information became key to comprehending the plot for a few chapters.
(I should also note that I did not, however, read the first book in this series, and at first did not even realize that it was a series. I became fond of many of the characters, though I was completely in the dark about a shady relative named Will, who was most likely better explained in the first novel.)
Overall, I liked the book and would read more in this series.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. What I liked about the book was the descriptive nature. It really makes you go through all the scenes very smoothly, it really made the characters come back to life. Although it's an e-book and I am not a fan of them but still I finished this one in a couple of days. As per me, the books need to be read in order, as the first book really introduced all the main characters, but this one gives more insight into their personalities.
I loved the characters, they are odd characters and whimsical but they merge together beautifully. The story if one reads, it moves in a very smooth manner and another part which I liked is that the writing style is easy to jot down in your mind. It doesn't make one feel overloaded. It was an interesting read, very gripping even when I was going haywire with my work, still, I couldn't leave it. A lot of twists and turns which makes you go wooooah! I really did enjoy the book, totally filled with mystery and awestruck moments with characters that take your breath away.
My second e-book by Netgalley! At times I can't believe I became a part of Netgalley community. This one is a huge progress, I am so happy to become a part of this amazing, heartwarming and beautiful book bloggers community. Other than this, do read this one, totally gripping and filled with woah mysteries.
The book had a good plot. Started off so well and had me hooked from early on. It did have a lull half way through where I felt it dragged on a bit rather than get on. The story went round in circles i felt just to fill pages. But towards the end the writer caught on and picked up again. It was a good exciting storyline. Nice mix of characters thrown in there.
I found this book somewhat confusing to read. On the one hand it was a retro style mystery novel written with a easy going style. However this did not fit with the unfolding subject matter of the case which turns out to be far more chilling and nasty. It is frankly unbelievable on so many levels including how such blatant abuse could have gone on unsuspected for so long. There were too many questions left at the end and far to many inconsistencies in the writing overall to make this a good read. Plus why the large glossary at the end? I get explaining real slang words such as 'bumfuff' but not 'chemist' or car park!
Ruby Baker and her investigative team are back! In this book Ruby is faced with a interesting request in helping track down a missing girl...by the woman who just spent 10 years in jail for her murder! This book takes place shortly after the first book and was easy to follow along with Ruby and her group of friend without reviewing everything that happened in the first book. I loved how the story was fast-paced and kept me interested the whole time! I hope Daisy White writes more about Ruby and her gang!
Great mystery Thriller !! Ruby Baker , the lead character is a trainee hairdresser by trade but has a skill for solving a mystery or two . It starts with a very young girl found on the beach unable to speak and all alone , at the same time a local woman named Beverley has just been released after 10 long years for the murder of her daughter Ella .She comes to see Ruby to acquire her skills & help her find the missing daughter she was accused of killing. I really enjoyed this book , the twists and turns kept me turning my pages and made it unable to put down. Although this is the 2nd Ruby Baker book it works as a stand alone book ... but I will be downloading the first just because I really want to read it !!!
Before I Found You is a terrific mystery. I enjoyed the plot and the author’s writing. Couldn’t put this book down. I recommend to readers who enjoy a good suspense.
Before I found you by daisy white.
A child found alone on the beach.
A mother who served ten years for a crime she says she didn’t commit.
Ruby Baker is back with another seaside mystery. When she and her friends rescue a child from the beach in a storm, police are baffled. Nobody has reported a child missing, and the girl appears to be so traumatised that she is unable to speak.
Wow a fantastic read. Couldn't put it down. Wanted to know who it was.
Recommended. 5*.
This follow up to last year's debut in this series (after Before I Left) finds Ruby and her best friend Mary distraught from coping with Mary's colicky newborn. But her nascent maternal feelings lead her to take up the case of a woman who pleaded for Ruby' s help locating her young daughter despite the fact that she's just completed a long prison term for murdering her' A lively, well-told story that's light on gore and grisly details but good on British eccentricities and female friendship.
BEFORE I FOUND YOU is the followup to BEFORE I LEFT. While this does well as a stand-alone, I highly recommend reading them in order.
Beverly Collins has just been released after serving 10 years in prison for a crime she didn't commit. Her young daughter disappeared and was never found. She wants Ruby to help her find her daughter.
Ruby and her friends find a young girl alone on a beach ... yelling at someone to "come back". The girl doesn't speak another word. Unfortunately no one knows who this child is, but for sure, she is not Beverly's daughter.
Ruby is stepping into a beehive in order to help Beverly. Most people in the community are absolutely sure that she murdered her daughter and should have been hung. There are few and far between that are willing to believe that she was a loving mother and would never have done anything to harm her daughter.
But as Ruby and her friends start asking questions, someone out there is willing to do anything at all to keep the truth from seeing the light of day. And Ruby is in the cross-hairs with a target on her back.
This is a well-written mystery, although slower paced than the first book in this series. I really enjoy the characters of Ruby and her friends. They are solid personalities and come alive under this author's pen. The premise is a good one and the ending came as a surprise.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Netgalley for the advance digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Thank you Netgalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
Ruby Baker is back in this 2nd in the series (I hope!) and what a great read...
Brighton in the 1960's is a wonderful place to go back to. It's summer and after a fun evening out with her friends Ruby rescues a young girl on the stormy beach from drowning. The girl is obviously in shock and doesn't speak at all and the police cannot find her family as they have no name for the child.
Ruby and her best friend Mary live in the bedsit above their boss Johnny's hair salon, along with Mary's baby Summer. They don't get much sleep with Summer's crying in the night and Mary is suffering from what seems to be post partum depression.
A woman, Beverly, has just been released from prison after serving 10 years for killing her 4-year old daughter, even though the girl's body was never found. She asks Ruby to help find her daughter, saying she was set up for the murder and Ruby agrees, instinctively believing Beverly was innocent.
The story is so good I had a hard time putting the book down. I love the setting of Brighton in the '60's and Ruby, Mary and their friends are hard to resist. The mystery is a compelling one and I can't wait for another trip to Brighton in a 3rd outing!
This can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the previous one first...it's well worth it!
Great book. Brilliant storyline and excellent main characters. I would not hesitate to recommend this book.
This turned out to be an intense and compelling historical crime fiction set in Brighton, with great characters and a mystery that takes in events that occurred in the past connecting with the present.. I found it a fast paced read, well plotted, and written well, gripping the reader to keep going until the end of the book. An entertaining and satisfying read which I recommend to others who enjoy crime fiction. This is the first one I have read of this series and I found it works okay as a standalone..
I enjoyed this book but wish I had read the prequel first as some of it was confusing. Ruby is a hairdresser who does investigating on the side and gets drawn into a huge and complex abduction case. Set in Brighton I think in the 60s but am not sure. Kept me entertained but would have read the 1st book first had I known about it.
