this book kept me on my toes throughout.
Harriet and Charlotte are best friends although they are a bit chalk and cheese. Both married with children but living very different lives. Harriet is a bit overprotective of her daughter, Alice, and never leaves her with anyone else. Until that is, she needs to go to a course on a day that her husband is not available for babysitting duties so, reluctantly, she asks Charlotte to look after Alice. It's the day of the school fete and so Charlotte, over the moon to finally be trusted, takes Alice along with her tribe. But then the unthinkable happens, Charlotte takes her eye off the ball, or rather off the children and Alice goes missing.
The police investigate and the full story unfolds with people turning up who are meant to be dead a great ending.
A fantastic thriller with plenty of twists and turns that are genuinely unpredictable! Well worth a read if you want something a little bit different.
I don’t know if it’s alright to admit, but missing children storylines are just a bit more exciting than your average thriller aren’t they?
Something about the blurb of this novel really captured and I loved it from start to end. It’s an absolutely perfect gritty family thriller with credible characters and I really hope it’s a Summer success. What I loved most about the book was that it was different. I read so many thriller books where it’s the same old guessable conclusion and even though I had an inkling as to the ending, it wasn’t quite what I thought.
Easily one of my favourite books this year.
A fantastic book with a twist I did not see coming. A well written book that despite the subject was written with taste and thought.
I read this book in one day, A gripping tale with very believable characters and a high suspense storyline. I thought I had sussed the plot out but then it twisted and I had to rethink! An excellent read with an ending you won’t see coming!
Actually 4.5 stars
Well, this book kept me on my toes throughout. Although I did have a bit of an inkling as to the truth, I didn't quite get there completely until the author revealed all.
Fast forward to a few weeks after the incident and we see that the police investigation has taken a bit of a strange turn. And thus begins a twisty turny tale of secrets and lies which was completely gripping to say the least.
This was a very well written and totally immersive book. Sadly, for me, it wasn't particularly original and contained a couple of main things that are rather prevalent these days, but that could be due to the fact that I read so many of this genre book that it does take a lot to both impress and surprise me these days. I'm obviously not able to qualify this statement here as it would inevitably include spoilers and that is not something I do.
Characterisation was on the whole good. I was able to connect with the majority of the main players right from the off so that really helped. As with most books of this genre, there was duplicitous behaviour aplenty and so there was a lot of mind changing as to what I thought / felt about them along the way. There were so many secrets to be found throughout that my head was spinning for the majority, never sure where the author would turn me to next.
Pacing was also mostly good although the beginning dragged a little for me. There is a lot of setting up and most of it doesn't really make much sense at time of reading so a lot has to be just held on to, waiting for further explanation later on. But, and I mean this, it is worth waiting for, very much so. I've already said that I did work some stuff out but there were things that nearly blew my mind!
It's also one of them timey-wimey books but the time changes are clearly labelled and, after a while, you get where you are due to context and story without needing much prompting.
All in all, a thoroughly decent read that, once it got going, gripped me for the duration. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
After reading the blurb of this book on NetGalley I knew I had to read it. I was lucky enough to be given a copy to review and I have to say this is one book I am so glad I had the opportunity to read before it was published because I’ve got a feeling everyone is going to be talking about it this summer.
When Harriet needs to go on a bookkeeping course, her best (and only) friend Charlotte offers to watch her 4-year-old daughter Alice. Harriet has never left Alice before and is a bit nervous but Charlotte assures her Alice, along with her 3 children will be fine at the school fete.
At the fete, Alice and 2 of Charlotte’s children run off towards the inflatable obstacle run. 3 children go on but only 2 come off. Where is Alice? She was there one minute and gone the next, how can she just disappear into thin air?
It’s every mother’s worst nightmare to lose a child but how would you feel if you lost someone elses?
This is a really well-written thriller. It leads you to think one way all the while taking you in a different direction. I kept trying to guess what was going to happen next and failing. Written from both Harriet and Charlotte’s point of view and flitting between the past and the present, it can be a little hard to keep up with in places but in general I think telling the story in that way worked really well.
As pieces from Harriet’s past are revealed through diary entries, we come to understand more about her as a person and why she comes across as so shy and nervous. There are some dark parts to this book but it is always interesting and always thrilling. There is plenty of action and I could not put this book down. In fact, I read the whole thing in pretty much 1 sitting as there was no break in the intensity, no point where I could have stopped reading and left it until another day.
Heidi Perks has done a fantastic job with this book. For me, it never strayed so far from reality that it became hard to believe but also never became predictable. It is relevant with social media references and relatable, who hasn’t had a quick flick through their phone whilst watching the kids at a park/on a bouncy castle? I know I have (though will be less inclined to after reading this!). Charlotte’s reaction when she first realises Alice has gone missing, her reluctance to call put a tannoy out because that will be admitting she had lost a child, is exactly how anyone would feel and I didn’t find it difficult to empathise with her, especially as the story developed.
I have never come across Heidi’s writing before but will certainly be keeping an eye out for her books in future!
'Charlotte is looking after her best friend’s daughter the day she disappears.
Now, Charlotte must do the unthinkable, tell her best friend Harriet that her only child is missing. The child she was meant to be watching.
Devastated, Harriet can no longer bear to see Charlotte. No one could expect her to trust her friend again.
Only now she needs to. Because two weeks later Harriet and Charlotte are both being questioned separately by the police. And secrets are about to surface.'
I read this book from cover to cover in less than three hours I could just not put it down.
This was such a fresh, compelling and thrilling story that had me on the edge of my seat by the end of each page. What I loved most was that the first twist in the book (because honestly this is just full of amazing twists and turns) was shocking but immediately understandable. On every turn of the page there was something new happening with the plot or the characters that you could never just stop and you couldn't make judgement about someone's character because something new was revealed that changed your mind about them. There were scenes that were so tense and uncomfortable that I was almost screaming down at the book.
There were only two points about this book that I slightly didn't like although they weren't big enough to change my emotions over the plot. The first was that towards the end after the two separate perspectives of Harriet and Charlotte had been marked out clearly they began to just intertwine with each other which made reading a bit confusing and I think some of the perspectives dragged on slightly longer than they should have in a fast paced book like this.
The second is entirely a personal opinion and has nothing to do with the way she was written but Charlotte's feelings and decisions at moments made me so frustrated especially as she was a mother I thought she would have a different perspective of what happened but can also understand some of her emotions.
Overall, I loved this book! It is exactly what I would want from this genre
Wow!!!! This book had me thinking, a lot. I did not like Brian from the start. This book also shows that there is different types of domestic violence and it is not always violent. This book is about trust issues, lies and jealousy as well as protecting those you love. I loved how the story switched between past and present and how it blended together in the end. I can also understand how Harriet wanted to protect her child and herself. This book was fast paced and I read it in less than 24 hours. I would highly recommend that you pick up this book to read, you won't be disappointed.
Had me hooked from the beginning, really fast paced with multiple twists and turns, a great psychological thriller!
Now you see her -
A missing child, every parent's nightmare - but imagine if a friend's child went missing while you were watching them. This was a great read, you got to know the characters well, and feel exactly how they were feeling - the guilt, the upset, the tears. I read the end few chapters quite quickly as I couldn't wait to find out what happened - a sure sign that I loved the book.
Unpredictable & Absorbing.
I was completely absorbed in this book from the opening page. The dual narratives and multiple time shifts create a multi-layered and unpredictable plot that at times had me shuddering with trepidation.
Raw and unflinching - the key characters emotions are omnipresent. The anguish that
envelopes Charlotte is palpable whilst Harriet’s despair seeps from the page.
As the story gathers momentum the twists knock you off your feet when you least expect them. The subtle nuances peppered throughout have you questioning everything and everyone. As you arrive at the startling conclusion you will be left wide-eyed and open-mouthed.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the advance copy. Highly recommended.
Absolutely incredible
This fast paced, exciting, heart-wrenching psychological thriller will keep you reading into the night. A missing child is every parents nightmare, imagine if it was your friends child missing and you were the one looking after their child, this is the scenario that Charlotte is faced with when she takes her friends daughter Alice to a school fete. Although, as we delve deeper into the story not all is as it first seems.
A brilliant story that keeps you guessing until the end, I highly recommend.
I enjoyed the book but occasionally I found myself a little confused with the narrative as to whether it was Harriet or Charlotte. The overall storyline was good but with few surprises, I found myself feeling dreadfully sorry for Charlotte when all she was trying to do was help,
A twist here, a turn there, a cul de sac or two and never clear ending until you arrive! However much I thought that I "knew" what was going on and who was to blame, I got it woefully wrong which meant that this turned from what I thought was going to be a simple read into something more complicated and far more interesting and enjoyable.
You get to mind your best friend’s only daughter… And the girl disappears from under your nose. What do you do? How do you live with it? How do you look in your best friends’ eye?
You lead a quiet family life. You are devoted to your child. Your husband loves you to the Moon and back. He forgives you your confusions and craziness. You even believe that you are crazy… But look closer. Your life is miserable. You are pushed into a corner. You can not confide in anyone, even in your best friend. You do not trust anyone because nobody trusts you.
Now You See Her scared me as a mother, disgusted me as a friend and appealed to me as a woman who survived her marriage… just. The story makes you look at everything twice, ten times. It reminds you that you can not take sides in life. As you never know what side you might end up yourself.
The search for the lost girl uncovers a lot of secrets, fears, loss and hope. Some relationship will end up ruined for good. Some relationships will start a new. Some mistakes will be rectified and more mistakes will be made. This story is as messy as our lives. People in our life make it (life) so much more complicated and complex.
Our best friends can be our worst enemies. Our husbands can be the most evil monsters. We, as mothers and human beings, can find ourselves pushed in such a place and a space where everything and anythings is possible, where we are capable of just about everything and more.
Now You See Her… do you? Do you really her (your daughter, your wife, your friend) for what she really is? Or you simply see what you like, what is comfortable and safe for you? Ponder on it, why don’t you.
Heidi Perks.- Now You See Her due July 2018
Brilliant read! Cliche, but I couldn't put it down & I cried many times too.
The book is set over 13 days of any parents nightmare - a missing child.
Harriet leaves her daughter Alice with her best friend Charlotte for the first time, so she can go on a course.
Charlotte, her own children, and Alice go to the local school fete when the unthinkable happens, & Alice goes missing.
The book then chapters the 'then' & 'now' of the hours and days of Alice's disappearance as Police, Charlotte, and Harriet are searching for her.
I am very good at pre-spotting spoilers and twists, but I genuinely didn't see the first one. Definitely needs to be on your Read list
This book was a difficult one for me to review. I was hooked to begin with. It was immediately clear that something was “off” about Brian. I felt that the story moved too fast and there was too much going on. I think that this book could have been very intriguing and still as compelling with the reappearance from any figures from the past! I would have liked to have heard more about the marriage, which things weren’t what they seemed originally etc. Saying all this it was still an enjoyable read for me as I lay next to the pool at a spa on my day off!
A compelling thriller with plenty of twists and turns. In the blink of any eyelid two friends relationship changed forever. This story has guilt, deception, mind games, manipulation and desperation, all driven by love.
This was an absolute page turner. It grips you right from the very first page and doesn’t let go until the final page.
It’s a parents worse nightmare. You leave your 4 year old daughter with your best friend as you are attending a course and need a babysitter. Your best friend takes your daughter and her 3 children to the school fete and then loses sight of them for a minute or two but your daughter doesn’t return. How do you cope ? How does your best friend live with the thought that they are responsible for your daughter not returning home ? How well do you really know your friends ?
This is a griping read with some great twists and brilliant characters. The book is written telling the story of Charlotte, the best friend, and Harriet, the mother. We are also told the story from the present and the past. I love this style and as the story unfurls we find out more and more information about the lives of those involved.
A definite 5star read for me. If you love psychological thrillers you will love this. A must read for 2018 !!
Thank you to Random House Cornerstone and NetGalley for a copy of this title in return for an honest review.
