Spine-tingling good! This is a powerful story about a distressing subject, the abduction of a child. Told from 2 points of view this is a mesmerizing tale of a woman pushed to the edge. I read it over 24 hours and literally read until my eyes couldn’t focus any more. YThe characters were so real that my heart broke for them. Well done to Heidi Perks on a fantastic novel. Thanks to #NetGalley for the chance to read this book.
Who would you trust to look after your children... and what would you do if they disappeared under their watch?
This is what happens to Harriet, who has let her daughter Alice go off with her friend Charlotte to a fete. Now You See Her is in parts a thriller, in parts a tale about relationships and friendships. It reminded me a lot of The Bad Mother by Amanda Brooke - another slightly creepy book about relationships and children.
The type of book that you start reading, instantly gripped.....walk around head down....nearly miss your stop and just devour until it’s finished ! A book about female friendships and a child who goes missing....highly recommend!
This is a gripping thriller , with a good an unexpected twist., Basically a missing child story, It is difficult to tell too much of the story without giving it away, but I didn't guess, The characters are believable and the father of the missing child is quite plausible.. My only criticism being that there are so many stories along these lines at the moment, however that doesn't detract from a good thriller well written.
Charlotte and Harriet are friends. Harriet has never left her daughter Alice with anyone before and then she leaves her with Charlotte. During a trip to the school fete Alice disappears. Both Charlotte and Harriet are devastated and can their friendship survive?
However, is all as it seems? Is Harriets marriage as it appears and is Charlotte as innocent as she claims?
This will have you guessing to the end.
This is a strange review to write, since I really wanted to find out what happened and completed the book in two sessions, but........ The story began well, with good pace and reasonably fluent narrative and readers will quickly engage with the two main characters, two mothers who enjoy a somewhat asymmetric but nonetheless close friendship. The lives of these two characters are thrown into turmoil when the single child of one is seemingly abducted whilst in the care of the other. Ms Perks uses a somewhat clumsy device to tell the story along multiple timelines, which doesn't always work but the brisk pace continues. There are some effective twists and turns as the story develops, some fairly predictable but others coming unexpectedly and adding to the reader's engagement. The involvement of the two characters with various police officers was perhaps less effectively and credibly drawn by the author, who expended more creative effort on the relationships between the two mothers and between the parents of the missing girl. For this reader the novel's trajectory narrowly missed its target with the denouement being a little disappointing when compared with the early scene setting and the developing understanding of the complex relationships between key characters. It was nevertheless a good read and is recommended
This is one of those books that I was intitialy unsure of. A missing child is an over written topic at times. However, this book is incredibly well written. The charachters are well drawn and believable. The story does have a twist and it keeps you guessing throughout which is refreshing in this type of story., where tension is often created by the horror of the situation. This was a first book, for me, by this author and i will definitely be back for more. A well written book, perfect holiday reading.
In a world full of psychological thrillers about missing girls, this is probably the only one that stands out on its own and reigns them all.
What would you do if you leave your kid with your friend, and she suddenly lost it? How would you react if they told you she was on her phone throughout that time? Your friend has many secrets, but hey - SO DO YOU!
While we have the overrated stories of how a girl goes missing, everyone involved is hiding something, things get intense, and in one moment we find it all out - here Heidi Perks did an extremely great job to spice things up and make this book one of a kind. She blended all these things together so well, that I couldn’t put the book down with intense moments happening on every single page.
The characters were very well formed - I could connect so easily to every single one of them. I loved their backgrounds and the little Easter eggs hidden through that only made sense in the end - PRECIOUS!
The story plot was so cleverly put together, and I greatly enjoyed it! A nice, fast-paced, psychological thriller that will give you the chills constantly, make you start biting your nails again, scroll through the next chapters and forget about your sleep until you’ve finished it!.
Big - intense five-stars from me, and definitely one of the best intense stories I have read in 2018!
A big thank you to Netgalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone, for providing me a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and was hooked from the beginning. As the book progresses I was unsure who was responsible. Towards the sun's half of the book the tension ramps up and I really felt fir Harriet and her situation. The characters are well rounded and likeable and it was a pleasure to read.
A story about every mothers nightmare.
Harriet leaves her daughter Alice with her friend Charlotte while she goes on a bookkeeping course. Charlotte takes her and her own three children to the school fete and Alice goes missing there.
This is told in alternate points of view from both Harriet and Charlotte. It is easy to follow, very realistic and is written fantastically.
The first book I have read by this Author and it certainly won’t be the last. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it if you enjoy a good read 😁
Many thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book for my honest review.
A brilliant and gripping read that had me on the edge of my seat, totally absorbed and trying to guess the outcome all the way through. Difficult subject matter - your child has vanished and cannot be found. A 5* read. One to recommend.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance reader copy.
Absolutely excellent psychological thriller. Friendship tested beyond the norm, how far can anyone go to break away from situations nobody should be forced to endure but few of us are courageous enough to break free from. Highly recommended.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book with its well described characters and lots of twists to keep you guessing .
Just finished this psychological thriller in less than three days. It is the story of friendship pushed to the limits when a child goes missing whilst in the charge of another mother. Held my interest right through and whilst I had an inkling of the truth behind the abduction it did not spoil the enjoyment of the plot unfolding.. The description of the moment when the mother realised her friend’s child was missing was brilliantly nightmareish. Thank you to NetGalley for a preview copy.
A truly gripping read you won't want to put down. Two friends, one missing child. A story of friendships and betrayal, of condemnation and judgment. This book was truly heart wrenching in parts and completely un-expected in others. A brilliant read with lots of twists and turns, with a plot you just won't fully expect. Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read and review this book
Wow just wow .....I love a good thriller and this one did not disappoint. It was every page was a page turner could not put this down .... the characters were well written and the story was so good with twists and turns right to the end .... I would hate to be in a position where you lose a child and this books shows you just what an experience it can be ..... Don''t wont to tell you too much just in case i give too much away but i shall now be purchasing Heidi's first book to read now !!! Thanks for such a great read
I was thrilled to see the release of Now You See Her by Heidi Perks, having previously read her outstanding debut, Beneath the Surface. This book deals with every parent's nightmare: a missing child, only Heidi Perks takes it a step further with the child going missing whilst being looked after by a friend.
Harriet is a bit of a loner and Charlotte is her only friend. When Harriet goes on a course out of town she asks Charlotte to look after her daughter, Alice. This isn't a problem for Charlotte as she plans to take Alice with her 3 children to the village fete. As the children all run off to an inflatable ride, Charlotte checks Facebook on her phone. OMG!!! Why can't people leave their phone alone for 5 minutes? It really annoys me how people are so dependent on their digital life when they have a real life passing them by. Whist Charlotte is immersed in what her friends have had for lunch on Facebook, 4 children get on the ride but only 3 get off. Where is Alice?
Charlotte's guilt is IMMENSE. Especially when she has to admit to having her eye on her phone and not the children. She doesn't even learn her lesson as she seems more concerned about what people think of her than what has happened to Alice. It's no surprise that Harriet doesn't want to see Charlotte when she and her husband, Brian, are given the devastating news that Alice is missing. Charlotte doesn't really know Brian as Charlotte is separated from her husband so they don't socialise as couples. It's a while before you realise that all is not as it seems in Harriet and Brian's marriage. Brian is a total control freak and plays with Harriet's mind even during the stress of Alice's disappearance. He is a totally detestable, manipulative character and he really made my skin crawl.
Fearing for Alice's safety, I felt as if I was acting as judge and jury with Charlotte standing in the dock. I followed the breadcrumbs left by Heidi Perks and, with all of the facts laid before me, I attempted to untangle truth from lies but it's not a straight-cut guilty or innocent case. There's so much going on and lots to uncover before we really find out what happened to Alice.
Now You See Her evoked such emotion in me (as you might have gathered from by Facebook rant). From the mental abuse being dished out by detestable Brian to Charlotte's (and the whole world's) Facebook obsession, I felt my blood pressure rising with every page and that is testament to the mighty fine writing of Heidi Perks. I am not surprised to learn that Now You See Her has been optioned for TV - it's an edge of your seat book and if it's half as good on the small screen, it will be brilliant.
Now You See Her is a twisty-turny psychological thriller that really stands out from the crowd in this very popular genre. It's powerful, emotive, surprising and gripping - definitely one to pick up and discuss at book club or with friends.
I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
I am a sucker for a good psychological thriller and this one did not disappoint. Books about missing children are fairly common but this had a twist that I didn't see coming.
I don't want to give anything away as I think it's best to go into this book knowing nothing. However I thought the author was brilliant at building up her characters and one the characters has to be one of my most hated characters in a book ever!
I really enjoyed this and would definitely read more by this author.
I picked this up at lunchtime and couldn’t easily put it down, so finished it before bedtime. Gripping and absorbing, it kept me guessing right until the end. A horribly believable situation evoking empathy for both the affected mothers. Well constructed, with chapters of exactly the right length so that you can break away when real life intrudes. Often, I read this sort of book with something approaching dread, but the ending was ultimately satisfying.
Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review. This book was really gripping. It took me only a few days to finish. the story follows ever parents worst nightmare you leave your child in the care of a trusted friend and she goes missing. Its told from alternate points of view and is set in time both before the assumed abduction and after. This book was full of twists and did keep me guessing right up until the end. Well worth a read I would recommend.
