Thank you to Heidi Parks and netgalley for allowing me to read this book for my honest opinions. This gripping book was brilliant, for page 1 to the last it kept me turning.
This was such a fast-paced book that pulls you in right from the start. Harriet has never left her daughter alone with anyone until she has no choice because she needs to go to an accounting course and needs someone to watch her. In comes Charlotte; a friend that Harriet has made through school who offers to look after Alice (Harriet’s daughter) and take her to the school fair along with her other 3 children and then that’ where things start going wrong. Charlotte takes her eyes off the kids for 2 minutes whilst they’re on an inflatable and Alice goes missing. Things move on from here and we get a lot of secrets reveals but I obviously don’t want to say anymore because of spoilers!
We get the perspective of both Charlotte and Harriet and we also get the past and present, so we get to see the lead-up to the abduction which I really enjoyed. The dynamics between were really well played out; Charlotte seemingly has it all in Harriet’s eyes and it was lovely to try and see Charlotte point out the flaws in her life so as not to make Harriet feel so bad about her own. The story really started to come into its own when we got to see the chapters that occurred before the abduction as these show you that things aren’t always as they seem, and you start to doubt everything. There were parts near the beginning where I really though that Harriet was just going a bit loopy, but the past scenes really brought to light what was going on. I also enjoyed getting to see Charlotte panic about what everyone was saying about her behind her back. Is she a bad parent or is it just bad luck? She has to deal with other parents and what they think of her and the repercussions of losing Alice even though it wasn’t necessarily her fault. A lot of the parents were very judgemental despite the fact that they also take their eyes off their children for a minute or so when they believe that they’re safe. It was just refreshing to get to see the other side of losing a child and the repercussions it has.
This is one of those books where there are more and more secrets being revealed or eluded to and it keeps you hooked all the way through and made you want to keep reading to figure out what the hell was gong on or what the secret was going to be. I also enjoyed the twist at the end and the way the end of the book played out. I really didn’t see it coming and I like that it could actually be believable and not some massive far-fetched twist that didn’t fit in at all.
This was a great take on the missing child/abduction plot that we see in thrillers and I thought it was really well done. The book was not just an enjoyable read but it was gripping and kept you guessing all the way through. The twists were believable and placed so well within the story that they didn’t feel fake or engineered or chucked in for the sake of making the story something special. I would like to say that despite this, I did just give it 4-stars and not a full 5. It was a great story, but I read a good few thrillers and it didn’t completely blow my mind which I feel that a thriller needs to now for me to give it the full 5-stars. Despite this, I would definitely recommend picking this up if you’re looking for a thriller read with a missing child.
Heart stopping. Gut wrenchingly real. Immediately identified with the main character and felt her pain. Agonisingly honest account of one of your worst nightmares as a mum. Totally nailed the reactions you'd expect should something so hideous befall you. Great twist loved it.
I love this new drama from Heidi Parks. Great for any fan of Lisa Jewell.
Twists and turns accompany this well-written look into an abusive marriage and a mother ready to do anything to save her child
What an awesome read! Never in a million years could I have predicted how things were going to turn out.
Charlotte reached out the hand of friendship to Harriet five years ago as she was new to the area and didn't seem to have any friends of her own. Five years on, they are fellow mums and whilst Charlotte is more relaxed with three children, Harriet is a bit of a 'helicopter' mum with her daughter Alice. Charlotte is therefore delighted when Alice is left in her care one Saturday and heads off the the school fete with all four children in tow. However, before too long she realises that now she only has three of them in her sight ...
This is a tremendously intricate read. Told partly in the present and partly in retrospect, it very quickly demanded one hundred percent of my attention, and I found myself loathe to lay it aside even to get some sleep. It is fairly obvious that something isn't quite right: Harriet is aware of it, Charlotte suspects it after a fashion, and the police know that things don't add up. But can they work it out? Indeed, could I? With several twists and surprises along the way, this novel hooked me from the first page to the last. Compulsive reading due to excellent writing, skilfully created characters and a very clever plot made this book totally worthy of a full five stars - and more!
My thanks to publisher Random House UK for approving my request via NetGalley. This is my honest, original and unbiased review.
Interesting story and once I was only a few chapters in, I knew I would be sticking with it until I knew how the tale unraveled. I did just that and I’m glad I did, but having said that, the basic premise (without giving any spoilers) of the story is a little unbelievable, which did spoil my enjoyment a little. Writing style was easy reading and would try another book from the same author in the future.
Now you see her - she's playing at the school fete with your own children. You pull out your phone, scroll through Facebook , and when you look up again - NOW YOU DON'T.
Charlotte is Harriet's only friend. Charlotte is divorced from Tom and has three children. Harriet is married to Brian and has a daughter called Alice. Harriet has never been separated from Alice since the day she was born. Harriet is taking a bookkeeping course and asks Charlotte to look after her. Charlotte takes Alice and her own three children to the summer fete where Alice goes missing after she has a shot on a jungle inflatable.
This story starts off very slowly. It's told in the present then it jumps back and forward to the past. It's also told from different points of view. The book is full is full of twist and turns. We keep finding out something new in either the characters or the plot. This is a tense but at times it can be an uncomfortable read. You will have to read this book to find out what happens. I could tell you but the I would only spoil it for you.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Random House UK, Cornerstone and the author Heidi Perks for my ARC in exchange for an honest review
A compulsive thriller that keeps you guessing till the end. An excellent read with an unexpected twist. Well recommended.
I always enjoy Heidi Perks books and this is certainly a good one. Alice goes missing while her mums only friend is looking after her at a school fate, every parents worse nightmare and more so when your trusted with someone does kids. The characters was well rounded and brought about different emotions, one minute I like them the next I didn’t, it’s definitely a book that keeps you on your toes with a lot of guessing. While it’s not a very original plot it was still very well written and really kept me glued.
Wow, what a book, I think I need to pause for breath after reading this.I like twisty books that keep me guessing and this book certainly did that.It is not easy to write a review, I won't spoil the book for other readers so am very limited in what I can say.I thought this was well written and it kept my interest from the first page to the last, all I can say is, it makes you wonder what is really going on in other people's lives and minds, and I think the author has one hell of an imagination, and I am very glad she does. Thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for an ARC.
Generally speaking, I prefer genres like Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Sometimes, however, I like to mix things up and pick books a little bit out of my usual comfort zone. Now You See Her was a pleasant surprise in that regard. I enjoyed the way Perks set up different timelines - mixing the interrogations with past events. There was a nice build up of twists and turns leading to a satisfying climactic ending. Both Charlotte and Harriet were interesting - and 3 dimensional - characters. I especially enjoyed the final interaction between the two.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for any more releases by Heidi Perks.
Unputdownable
Not at all what I was expecting.
I read this book almost in one sitting. There were times where I just didn't want to continue reading because of what I was going to read - but I just couldn't stay away.
The opening is beautifully crafted: visual, sensory, real and enthralling. The fractured narrative works well, weaving the reader between characters and time, capturing and maintaining interest.
Somewhere, though, the narrative loses its way.
The husband becomes a cliche; the wife as much so....at one point I thought there was going to be a full "turn of the screw". Sadly, by the final section I was flicking pages to finish rather than holding my breath in anticipation.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest, independent review.
Wow, I didn't expect that! I thought this was going to be your usual "kid goes missing with the odd twist thrown in" book, but this one had so many twists I ended up suspecting everyone of being behind Alice's disappearance. I found the story chilling in places, a bit to the point I didn't want to go to the next page...but I also couldn't put it down and wanted to know what happened next!
I loved the two main characters, Charlotte and Harriet, and their friendship and felt drawn in by them, and I really felt for Charlotte, particularly as she was in charge of her friend's daughter at the time of her disappearance. The two timeframes running through the book worked particularly well as I felt just as I was on to working something out in the mystery, Perks went back to the previous timeframe and threw a spanner in the works!
This book is a must-read for 2018!
The book had strange powers. I saw the shadowy tendrils arise from it in an insidious manner, swirl slowly, taking a careful whiffs around, and then ensaring me, pulling me towards it till I was addicted to reading the book. Such was the power of Heidi Perks' Now You See Her
The story revolved around a child Alice, her mother Harriet, and the neighbor/friend Charlotte. The three formed the main crux of the story. Harriet had to attend a day course on the day of the fête, so Charlotte was minding Alice for the day. Waiting for the kids to finish their rides, she took her eyes off them and glanced into her phone (as most of us do), and Alice disappeared from the fête.. POOF. No clues, no reasons... Just a strange disappearance. The mystery starts, and the pages start rolling.
I liked the way the author Heidi Perks had written the plot, it involved strange dynamics between Harriet and Charlotte. Are they friends? Aren't they? They met up, they spoke, but did they really know each other? Harriet's husband Brian too behaved oddly towards Charlotte. Did losing a child make him go off balance? Or was it something more?
Heidi Parks with her sublime mysterious writing, did not allow me to breathe. I kept leaving my other work to return to this novel. The suspense of wanting to know what happened to the child was too high...
Once the cops made their appearance, there was a distinct tremble of secrets in the air which ripped the characters to act and react. Human nature was described in turns where friends show sympathy initially then doubts followed by avoidance. Both the families were ripped apart. Charlotte's guilt at losing the child was palpable throughout the book.
But it was Harriet that my eyes were drawn to, she intrigued me, an over protective mother who had never been away from her child for even thirteen hours was away from her for thirteen days. Her husband Brian too showed his caring in various ways, some of them were a bit too close to be comfort. There was something very disturbing in the aura between them all. And that trapped me into the book....
Now You See Her caused nobody to see me for the day, till I finished the book, and the tendrils released me, with a shock, literally making me fall on my ass, wondering —Wow what did I read just now!!
What a brilliant book! Charlotte is looking after Harriet's daughter Alice for the day while Harriet is attending a course designed to get her back into the workplace. Harriet is the ultimate helicopter mother, she hates letting Alice out of her sight and the day she goes missing is the first time she has ever left her with anyone else. Coincidence?
Charlotte blames herself when Alice goes missing at the school fete and she has no shortage of people blaming her, she is accused to neglect, of paying too much attention to her phone and not supervising the children properly. Harriet's worst nightmare has come true. However, things are never quite what they seem and there are some massive twists and surprises to come.
Some parts of the book are heartbreakingly sad, and the dysfunctional relationships are extremely true to life. There is tension throughout and I certainly didn't predict the outcome! Really well written and entertaining, I didn't want to put it down! Excellent book, I would thoroughly recommend.
This book will have you gripped from this very beginning.
If you want a physiological thriller that is different
THIS IS IT
a plot with plenty of twists, turns, guilty secrets, deceit, lies and blame makes this a one sitting read
Highly recommended holiday read
Thank you netgalley, Ramdon House UK and Heidi Perks for allowing me to read and review this book.

It was full of surprises and lies .
It was a splendid book
Glad for Netgalley for given me
Now you See her is a brilliant psychological thriller ,a really gripping hard to put down book .It is told in a past and present mode which I think helps to build the story which is about a child that goes missing but it is so much more than that !.This book really keeps you guessing with twists and turns until you reach the final chapter . Wow just loved it would give 10 stars if I could .Many thanks to the Publisher ,the Author and NetGalley for the review copy in return for an honest review .
I liked the synopsis and the one worded reviews were right up my street and boy they were were bang on the money. I was hooked from the start, it was gripping and made my heart beat at nearly as fast as I was turning the pages. I thought I had guessed the many twists but no I couldn’t of be n more wrong which made it all the more exciting, terrifying and and impossible to read with no facial expressions at all. The plot worked and it worked well, it was never dull and certainly kept the suspense at a high at all times. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity of reading this cracker, I am now envious of friends who haven’t read it. I will shout about this book for a long while!
